  1. Well, it's not so bad on Justice Dept. Raids Homes of File Swappers · · Score: 1

It's the difference between busting a pot smoker and someone who traficks millions of dollars worth of the stuff. I can say that I have bought all my music online, legally, (well, at allofmp3, which is legal is Russia). I have only downloaded one song in the past few months, because it wasn't on their archives. I will also buy CDs, because some bands/people make it worthwhile. The truth is that these "hubs *were* taking money from the artists, at a fairly high rate (my entire music collection, at 192 bitrate, is only 570MB). 100GB is a bit excessive, and that does take money from people who deserve it.

  3. Re:Security? on Defending The Skies Against Congress And The Elderly · · Score: 1
Imagine this situation: a flight is unable to land, due to the gear not being operable. The captain decides to attempt a risky crash landing, and tells the tower to be ready. Immediately after the landing, the escape ramps are lowered. A spark from the metal-on-tarmac landing ignites the fuel, and the plane begins to burn. Not only will the handicapped person have *no way* to move, the flight crew who tries to assist him/her may also perish. This *has* happened before.

As for children, they can aid in their own evacuation, except for those too young to walk, and they are unlikely to encumber their parents when *they* evacuate, thus making it much safer than a fully grown adult who needs help to move. Children that can walk can assist in their own evacuation. This really only means that they can find their way to the exit and move toward it. It doesn't mean they have to be able to rip flaming chunks of metal off themselves.

  4. Re:Security? on Defending The Skies Against Congress And The Elderly · · Score: 5, Informative

Actually, I have heard that this was done due to safety concerns, as the airlines have the right to refuse service to anyone who would be "unable to aid in their own evacuation from the aircraft". This would be stated in the Terms of Carriage (a document that no one reads, much like a EULA). This is a safety issue, and although it may seem insensitive, there is a clear and good reason for it.

  5. Speaking from experience on Note Taking Devices for Students? · · Score: 1

I too have a condition that makes writing slow, and slightly painful (cerebral palsy). That being said, I have no trouble with taking notes. It is generally doing essays and so on that cause me trouble, and most schools are more than accomodating (as well as the province for my provincial exams; I got to use a computer). I used to have a Palm and a PocketPC, both with folding keyboards, and I must say that it isn't a perfect solution. I still take notes by hand, and I just ask nicely for computer time if I need to do anything longer. The person in question should also try to not make the notes verbose, that could help.

I agree completely. If you stole a car identical to the one you own, so you have a backup in case you wreck your current car, you'd be treated (rightly) like a lunatic. If you wrap that car around a tree, the manufacturer won't replace it. But if some part of the car is defective as a result of *their* actions, they will replace it for free. Perhaps you people should *take care of your fucking disks*. If the disk itself is defective, the company will replace it.

I use linux, not BSD, but I imagine the two are close in some aspects. It took me literally a minute to install nVIDIA drivers on my gentoo box, whereas the "integrated graphics" I had prior to that took the better part of a day searching, patching various things, recompiling kernels, and installing. It is good to see that some hardware companies *do* care about open-source support. And I really don't care that the driver isn't open, as long as it's free (beer).

There are many local computer stores (if you live in a big city) that will allow you to pick individual components, and they will assemble it and add the OS for ~US$40. And there is a much wider selection of options. And they offer the same warranty as Dell. And, if something gets fubared, you don't have to talk to some Paki, or wait for on-site service. You can take the box right in and tell them to fix it, or do hardware upgrade, or whatever. If people found out about this, Dell and Alienware would both be screwed.
