Actually, the Neo-Geo is the longest lasting game console, it was released in 1990, and just this year the last game for the system was released.

Of course, you had to pay lots of money (hundreds of dollers per game), but they had a decent following, although it never had the success of the PSOne. They're still quite expensive. Gabe from Penny-Arcade is a collector.

... where units sold brings more developers to your system, and then those new developers bring games to your system, which sells more units.

Hopefully Sony realizes this and get as many PSPs out the door as possible (with a low price point), which is really the key to success for any console. The GBA ("classic") is really a horrible system (the screen...), but theres so many out there, it makes developers bring more good games to it, making it an awesome handheld (especially now that the screen is fixed).

An awesome looking handheld, the only real problem I see is that theres only one analog nub, so we might not see any Ape Escape games on the PSP :(

The site's owner had received permission from several Japanese publishers to post screenshots from their games, but other companies, including SNK Playmore, Capcom, Square Enix, and Namco, allegedly found media from their games posted on the site without their permission, leading to today's arrest.

I dunno, the graphics are some of the best parts of Squenix's games :P

Capcom I could see getting upset, using sprites from 1994 for games a decade later.

I dont why they wouldn't want the hype, but its their product, and they can do with it what they want. Just like Linux people would be upset if someone violated the GPL, even in good spirit (although they, most likely, wouldn't have the violater arrested, but these are companies who probably have a team of lawyers just to protect their "intellectual property")

I mean, the companies didn't want their games being shown on that website, and the owner didn't comply. There has to be more to this story, because I doubt they'd have him arrested if they had not asked him to take the screens down before resorting to legal action. Then again, Japan has a much different culture and their copyright law seems more strictly enforced than the US. Any one have any experience with Japanese copyright law?

Apple's support of their own hardware is selective and short-lived at best, as evinced by the lack of support for several macs with G3 processors in OS X. The fact that you can make it run on them with third party software that tricks the installer into going ahead and doing its job is particularly pathetic.

This was fixed with 10.3 (Panther) released last fall. They also sent out rebates to G3 owners who purchased it but didn't get it to run.

It might not be flawless, but it is leaps and bounds ahead of other operating systems (Linux especially) for people who aren't super advanced. (ex: "Oh! That Linux install was easy enough, thanks SuSE! What? I dont have a modem? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?")

Hopefully we get more games that are more than just the sum of their parts, and I see them from companies such as Nippon Ichi, and Nintendo.

Its kind of interesting that even though everyone makes fun of the Phantom. Sony and Microsoft are talking about "broadband delivery" of games for their PS3, PSP, Xbox2, and its already occuring in limited things like patches and extra content on the current Xbox.

It could be a good idea, I am really tired of waiting for the stupid stores in my area to grab a hold of a copy of the latest obscure game I want (it took them at least 3 months to get Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast when it came out, and Disgaea is nowhere to be found since a few weeks after launch, until its rereleased...

Then again, I like having a physical copy of the game in my posession, so if my console dies, I dont lose my games.

I dont know if you can really compare portables to to consoles, but it looks a lot like the end of the 16-bit generation. Nintendo is dominant, and saying that "Carts are the medium of the future!" yet again, and Sony is using a format, while not as ubiquitous as CD, almost as useful as the CD format in the PSX. Of course, you've had your 3DOs, and other failed consoles with your Ngage and things like that, and it seems to be just a battle between Sony and Nintendo.

While I'd like to see the PSP to be a success, it would be a major blow for them to lose their stranglehold on the 18% of the game market in portables. (sorry I cant find a link, but its a pie chart where Sony is at somewhere near 50% with its PS1/PS2, Nintendo with 15% or so with home consoles, GameBoy with 18%, and Xbox with the rest.)

to quote homer_ca, on a topic about Wi-Fi on Cell Phones: "Toy is right. Besides the problem of roaming, power consumption is a huge problem with Wifi. 802.11b is a high bandwidth, long range (compared to Bluetooth at least) protocol. It consumes a lot of power just maintaining a link to the AP. According to this it consumes 800mW while idle with a link up, 950mW while receiving, and 1400mW while transmitting. Wifi might be practical for outgoing calls, but not the other way. You'd drain your battery ust sitting at a hotspot waiting for a call."

Nice try Nintendo, but you'll have to tell us how many hour(s) the DS can run before you can criticize the PSPs battery life.
