  1. He may suggest, but who will listen? on Homeland Security Adds Cybersecurity Position · · Score: 1
    I can see it now:

One of his first suggestions will be to switch all critical machines to a more secure, non-windows OS (I'll leave the /. crowd to debate which one). Microsoft will lobby against it. Lawmakers will notice that we have the rest of the world paying the Microsoft tax, which is in turn taxed by the US government, and decide to keep Microsoft around. Nothing will change except the occasional yellow or orange fear alert light.

For example, I pronounce the word turnip as turn-up while the mac says turn-ip. It won't understand unless I speak with its accent. If you're wondering why I'm talking about turnips with my mac, it was during one if its stupid knock knock jokes. Try saying "tell me a joke" to your mac, you'll see. They're awful ;)

  15. Re:Alex, I'll take Level 6 for $200 on "Levels" of Computers the Future? · · Score: 1
By settling on a standard such as this, the computer industry would be further commoditized. Hence, brand means nothing, it's all about the level.

What would ultimately happen is whomever could produce the highest level for the cheapest price would win market share. This winner would constantly change to the next cheapest guy in China. Profit margins would shrink even more (and maybe even disappear completely, as is the case with the dvd player market).

While Microsoft would love all computers to be cheaper, there is zero incentive for manufacturers to adopt this practice and surrender any gains they have made with reputation and brand equity. Do you see level ratings on tvs, cars, or beer? No.

However, I would love to see a level rating on operating systems!

A computer cannot possibly determine if an argument is well formed, flows nicely, and leaves the reader questioning their previous beliefs.
