Of Mp3s are ok:-) Actually, this condition is something that pushed me away from CDs. I almost broke down and cried when I could see through my "Ok Computer" CD. I still bought the next 3 albums from Radiohead, but I immediately rip'd them.
CDs are better than floppies, but... last forever... definitely not.
What does over-clocking gain you? CPU Errors(instability), extra-heat, voided warranty, and possibly a dead CPU. Yes, you can come up with ingenious ways to keep that chip cool, but is the result really worth it especially when the extra speed you gain will be available in a non-overclocked model next month?
whereas getting experience on a Mac isn't too easy
I just used the same argument in another thread so...:-)
here you can just apt-get whatever you need, or wget and rpm -i... etc.
Mac has fink for compiled open-source binaries. It works pretty good. The good thing about Macs is that you do get a consistent platform. Linux provides a lot of customization and configurations(just look at the different distros). With Mac, you know exactly what tools will be needed and chances are, that if a security patch has not been sent throught "Software Update" then the hole is open.
It's just not as useful to break into a Mac... I mean, what are you going to do, run photoshop in batch mode with applescript? Macs are just less useful, and thus, not worth breaking into.
On the contrary, an Apple machine == "UNIX machine" that can compile just about any Open Source application on the planet. All OSX installations come with GCC and the full compliment of UNIX tools, Which means that you can do whatever you want with it(IRC,FTP,Apache,DoS Attacks, virus spreader etc...)
Home PCs are beyond the reach of any help. Whatever is done is already too late. Home PC users will have to migrate to Linux within 6-12 months or face working without the Internet.
So, you are saying that these people who click these e-mail virus, run without virus scanning software and run their network wide open to the internet should migrate to linux.
Just what we need is a bunch of Linux users with a root password of "password" that never get updated or patched. As most people know, an exploited Linux machine is a lot more powerful than an exploited windows machine.
I understand your point of view, but I don't think Linux currently offers any advantages for these people.
Availability: Do the mirrors work? FTP, HTTP, ISO, etc...
Install: I recently needed to install linux on a 128 meg drive. Why is it that none of the smaller(size-wise) provide a good install and why do the larger distributions like RedHat require at least 400 megs. I decided to screw all distributions and install everything by hand.
Hardware setups: I love distributions that do it all for me. Just like Windows(I use Mac:-P
Grandmother appeal: Would my Grandmother be able to understand everything? This means less geek talk and more pretty eye-candy that grandma can click on.
Name: Come on... a name is important. I know several people who use Slackware just because it has the name "slack" in it.
logo: That green Gecko is cool, the linux penguin is cool, the BSD daemon is cool, the Debian ?!? WHAT THE HELL DO I DO FOR A SHIRT:-)
standards: RPM, filesystem, standard desktop environments etc... As Linux is pushing more towards interoperability between distributions... Being a rebel amongst the rebels is no longer cool.
Anyways, this is my own personal list... I am sure that everyone else will beat it to death.
I know people who like to steal music and movies. The Movie industry is happy with this technology, but the real people who want to steal stuff will just buy some black market technology that will make all this irrelevant.
Everyone is going to post how you need a degree, do your time, and experience.
But... what you really need is a niche. Something that makes you special. What currently separates you from the 1,000s of other people looking to advance in the IT field.
A couple of good examples of niche areas are video encoding/decoding, foreign languages, streaming media, strange languages, etc...
Lets face it, many jobs have special needs, find an area that you can excel in. A recent example of a niche that earned me a job interview was Python. Not too many people know the language(of course everyone of them will respond to this statement), and I was able to get an interview(sadly not a job).
Since when did PHP take these large grounds in popularity to overtake the most popular scripting language in history. PHP is nice, but it is very limited. Perl is very mature, stable and benefits from one of the best programmers in the world(Larry Wall). Not to mention that you can almost make toast with regular expressions.
And, I hate to say it, but installing PHP is one of my least favorite things to do, along with stabbing my eyes out with a rusty knife.
I feel your love for PHP, but different tools for different people.
get off your pedestal. Linux apps crash too just as my Mac's apps crash. Windows doesn't blue screen near as much as the good ole days so your argument "did not have to be said".
I think the point is that SuSE is worried about proprietary patches and work not going for the benefit of the community.
I agree with you though, Open-Source business models are hard enough, if RedHat deems it beneficial to its customer base to do this, don't stop them. It is their money and their customers.
While I love my 17" 1ghz G4 more than anything in the world....5 ghz would not be any incentive to ever upgrade it.
Unfortunately for Apple, the lack of speed differences felt between the G4 processors has totally sealed my next laptop to be one of the smaller iBooks. Until recently, I was actually looking at the slower 800mhz G4 iBook.
I think what the public really wants at this point is a G5 laptop, but I thinks they run a lil hot. I love the fact that I can keep my powerbook on my laptop without any harm to me or my children. So, hopefully Apple can find a nice compromise for us yearning for a portable G5.
Considering that the Earth is mostly ruled by religions that base us to be the center of the universe. We have already taken away lots of "facts" from religions. Proof of life on other planets... Well, all I can think of is the crumbling of Western Religions.
Now, the question is... since the US is largely a Christian society, does this information become a part of national security since "Under God We Trust"? How fun:-)
I think the biggest problem with "old" peeps is that they are use to something. Don't fear change!
Kalelis or whatever said that he likes listening to songs the way the artist intended. Unfortunately, the artists of today don't be too concerned with the songs on their album after the first 2 or 3 singles. This is not all artists, but I know that several people feel just as upset as me about the quality of CDs presently. Random shuffling of a quality music collection ensures that you get good songs all the time.
This honestly seems pretty far-fetched. If you can't take the time to get directions, chances are that you deserve to die. You know, that whole thing of natural selection:-)

Overclocking is just a bit over-rated.

And to think how worried I was when I first read the title
Too bad their isn't a microsoft tree that Apple accidentally be given a patent on:-)

not useful... try again.
This is such a tired comparison now.
I offer some counter examples...
Maybe hackers and virus writers can't afford to buy an Apple. Thus, how can you exploit a machine that you have little exposure too.
or
Maybe hackers have more respect for Apple taking open Open Source and being the underdog.
or
Maybe, just maybe... Apple really does have good security.
Blanket statements/stereotypes are usually incorrect. I would expect a little bit of the above and your argument is the case.

ebay has plenty
Well said!

We remain proud of OpenBSD's record of eight years with only a single remote hole in the default install.
Every Hacker dreams of finding a way to hack the 5 people who use it:-)
Seriously, how many people use OpenBSD... I got one of those cool wire daemon shirts that they put out, but I wouldn't dare run it:-P
Not trolling... just that I have never met anyone IRL that runs this.

I don't have any children... yet;-P

I was thinking... does it really matter?
Then I decided that it does.

no joke, I hate finding porn in "Real" media.
Apple rocks, Real Sucks.
Apple: innovates, creates, researches, and standardizes.
Real: sneaky sneaky sir.
AdAware has an option to run-on-bootup.
Why not just automate daily reboot of those machines.
Average Mac User is happy:-)
Sorry, but this just doesn't happen on OSX(or linux:-)

Guys asking for directions...
This honestly seems pretty far-fetched. If you can't take the time to get directions, chances are that you deserve to die. You know, that whole thing of natural selection:-)
2.4.26 vs. 2.6.5 I think you will be happy with the scheduler improvements alone.
