Why not put power generation in the middle of the city?
Allot of new tall buildings are being designed if wind generators as a feature, high up and near heat sources like cities the wind is pretty constant.
If you have small safe nuclear reactors then the city may be the best place for them after all that's where the load is right.
So it might mean that major building might get paid to dig another couple of levels into the bed rock, with one of those levels back-filled with the rock, and massive dump tanks. You can put allot of mass between these power supplies and the local population.
Using current and even foreseeable technologies "machines" can only really replace precision jobs. Anything that requires even a mild degree of flexibility or reaction to prevailing conditions is going to need a person.
While agree that training people to use their innate flexibility is good for all concerned, and employment is certainly moving towards project based (although we may still more of the team moving,than the individuals, already the M.O. of most professions). The Efficiency of machines really has to be questioned, i think we passed the point where what we know as machines offer any real gain a long time ago. Indeed every machine that replaces a worker these days should also require a population reduction of least 2 to cover the energy footprint.
In order for a technology to replace all but the interesting jobs we are talking an event as significant as the the engine on the Industrial Revolution, or computers on Information. Given how long those two technologies existed as ideas before reaching tipping point of Revolution. Is there anything on the horizon, other than Television, capable of producing efficient mindless drones(machines) capable of filling the need for all the mindless jobs. Well at least in our lifetimes.
Of coarse it's simple cost cutting. It's making it buzzword compliant that's the hard part. Mostly by trying to make people sick less, and wasting hours scheduling meetings for things that can be resolved in 5-minute casual encounters.
I think that's because they realise that having all employees occasionally moving and interacting with other staff, was good for the health, well-being and productivity of all staff.
Allot of "new age" managers rarely get offices, some don't even have a desk, having laptops and a range of meeting spaces, so they can move to the work instead of it coming to them.
The question you have to ask is how long will music be free, if no one is buying it?
After all the artists are staving now, with the poor standing they have now in music contracts. If your actions give them less power not more in that contract. How long will it be before the only new music will be over marketed pop aimed at teenage girls and the males who want to have sex with them?
I can't see how patronising a system that has to potential for the artist to make more money from their actions, balancing the equation, and puts the diversity of music squarely in our collective hands makes anyone a sucker.
Yep the cube would make a great "Mac Pro". Make the new one to match the cinema displays, with the graphic card slot to allow options. That's bound to be a real winner.
Although wouldn't such a product cut in to the iMac market? which if demand for Mac keeps going up might be a good thing to speard demand, and increase sales of options like the cinema displays. There is a big gap between the top iMac and the lowest tower to fit such a product in to.
two Minis, two iMacs, two Cubes, two Towers, two Xserves would make a damn good line up.
Didn't Palm Licence a lot of Apple's Tech from the Newton to Develop the Pilot? If so then Apple would want to buy Palm for several reasons. a) regain control of the IP. b) farm the R&D done by Palm over the years on that IP. c) Market Position, user base.
Let's face it Apple wanted to get back into that market. Life drive and other Palms could fit nicely as extensions to the iPod Group. Then streamline and make the range more part of the iPod family. Not to mention value to a more Mac like tablet product between the Palm and the the Book.
We are not killing the planet, Just ourselves, and taking most the mammals with us. It's Happened Before... And if we're not smart it will happen again.:-)

In response to coming adverse situations the primal part of the brain that controls such things, in Fighters will lower metabolism, dig in and prepare for the long haul. in Flighters will raise the metabolism to have lots of energy on stand by, to run away.
There is a good scam here if you can pull it off. Convince the company you need an assistant, (good for the company to be employ young people, promote it's future, engender loyality by given someone a chance, yadda, yadda, yadda) and your doing the work of two people.
-get an assistant who has some training or get them trained, but make sure young and cheap. -convince the company you should have a couple hours a week to review the assistants training with them (i.e. they train you) -then when they know what their doing suggests it would good to show confidence promote the person in to your job. -and get yourself promoted back into the sort of work you'd rather be doing.
Someone gets a job, you both get training, and if you work it right you'll both get a pay rise.

Yes all these legal question come down to semantics. From memory all the OS packages sold in store have always been called upgrades. Not as outright or standalone software packages.

Use intergrated grahpics and all the other trick Laptops have to offer. Then you are looking at same sort of number for power you would expect to see for a Laptop.
You missed out a couple of the Australian options there. 4) solar - in a lot of areas will get the water more than warm enough. 5) Solar Heat Exchange - uses some power but really small conpared to heat energy harnested. 6) Solar Pre-heat Boost on demand. either gas or electric, nice hot showers with very low energy foot print.
To bad we just don't use our water well. No guilt free long showers even with the solar options.
