  1. Re:read this earlier on US Air Force to Test Hi-Tech Weapons on Americans? · · Score: 1, Insightful
The question you should be asking is "Why is the Military being used for civillian law enforcment?"

Who said anything about civilian law enforcement? The idea is that the military uses these against the enemy to avoid casualties on both sides of a war. I think the government should be applauded (for once) for trying to use non-lethal force where possible. Is the best testing solution to use them on civilians during riots or for extreme measures of crowd control? That is open to debate, but other "non-lethal" methods of crowd control have killed before (like the student from Boston a couple years ago who was killed by a rubber bullet).

I don't think the testing is meant to answer "does this work as intended?" but rather "will the weapon's effects affect the targets in the way we want?" For example, let's take a weapon that emits a targetted high pitch noise that is deafening to its targets. We can be pretty sure that it's going to work and not kill anyone, but how will the targets respond? Are they going to go crazy because of the noise and charge the police/military, or will they drop to the ground covering their ears and surrender? Testing this on volunteers from the army would not be as telling as it would be to test it on an angry mob.

If you are a good poker player you will experience more variance when playing against novice players, but you should in the long run win considerably more than against good experienced players.

You get more variance because novice players usually chase lots of hands and will therefore deliver more than their fair share of bad beats, but it also means that they will be playing behind the odds more often than not and over time, with the odds in your favor, you should come out considerably ahead.

The problem with novices is that they often won't play long enough to be able to reliably extract money from them. Many of them will sit down at a table with $50 and either lose it all quickly or hit a few lucky rivers and end up taking $200 from the table and leaving.

My problem when playing with inexperienced players is that I begin to play like them. Their extremely loose play encourages me to loosen up as well (when it should do the opposite) because I hate sitting there watching a few loose players play a hand when I folded. Several loose players will really slow down the hands per hour because you are going to see a showdown nearly every hand. My solution was to play slightly higher limits which still puts me with poor players but they are slightly tighter and don't encourage me to play too loose.

The act of the moon slowing down the rotation of the earth should not have any effect on the earth's orbit around the sun, unless you are postulating that the rotation of the earth helps maintain its current orbital pattern.

I wasn't saying anything about the earth's orbit around the sun. The post I had originally replied to said that the earth would rotate once every 28 days, because it would be tidally locked to the moon. This doesn't mean the earth stops spinning, it just means that one spin takes just as long as it takes for the earth/moon system to complete one revolution around each other. Currently this is approximately 28 days, but as the moon gets further away it would take longer for one cycle to happen.

None of this is related to the orbit around the sun.

Minus and plus need to be given the same level, as shifting to get a plus is not logical compared to minus.

Except you're forgetting one thing -- people use the "minus" as a hyphen or dash. So that makes sense to have it accessible without a shift. Whether the plus or the equals should require a shift is an interesting topic, as neither are used in normal prose. For programming, I'd guess that I use the = a lot more than I use a +, especially in languages where string concatenation is not done using the +. Also, I would say I use the ? much more than the /, and curly braces more often than square brackets, so those could probably be changed as well, except for the fact that changing them would screw everyone up. My biggest pet peeve is the large enter button (the one that is J shaped). I want my backslash to be right above the enter key (and below the backspace), not to the right of the shift key (or left of the backspace key). At work my keyboard has the large enter key and I always add extra newlines when I'm trying to use the backslash. Then I get used to it by the end of the day, go home, and then get screwed up with my keyboard at home...rinse and repeat.

Now, I know that Square-Enix's MMORPG isn't quite as popular as World of Warcarft, but I'm going to guess that's more of an indication that Blizzard is being more proactive in their banning of cheaters than Square-Enix is.

Either that or the percentage of "cheaters" in WoW is greater than in FFXI. I put "cheaters" in quotes because, at least in the case of WoW, the "cheaters" often aren't using any illegal hacks or third party programs -- they are either buying or selling gold, items, or accounts. That doesn't mean that some (or perhaps most) of the farmers in WoW aren't using illegal macros or other 3rd party programs, but my guess is that the majority of people banned didn't use any illegal programs -- they just violated the terms of use in some way.

Also, from the article it looks like Square-Enix focused on the suppliers (these so-called "RMT" groups), while Blizzard went after both the buyers and the sellers.

If you have any question on how aggressive the staff at Square-Enix is, take a look at this blog by a GM for the game.

It was the fact that when I turned my head, the game turned too! It was so cool to look over and see my fellow players right there.

This past March was my second trip to Disney while DQ was open, but it was the first time that the Aladdin game was actually running (my previous trip in 2000, the game was not available -- I forget whether it was down for repairs or not installed yet). I also loved moving my head right, and the screen moving as well. The other neat part was that the heads of the other characters moved as well -- so if the person next to you was looking at you, the character was also looking at you.

That being said, I think DQ is slowly dying. The first time at DQ was after my freshman year of college, with my 3 college roommates. We had an all-inclusive pass to Disney, which included DQ. Since DQ was open until 11 or 12 every night (and the parks closed between 8 and 10), we would head over to DQ almost every night after we were done at the parks. We had a blast playing the new games as well as the old games. Once DQ closed, we'd head over to Pleasure Island to finish up our night.

Now that the "all-inclusive" pass only has a limited amount of "extras," going to DQ for an hour or two didn't make sense when you could spend your extra on a day at the waterpark or a long night at Pleasure Island. Aside from a few new arcade games, there wasn't much new, and several of the fun games were no longer there. None of the VR games were new since 2000, with the possible exception of Aladdin as I explained before. To make matters worse, 2 or 3 of the VR games were closed the week we were there, and at least 25% of the arcade games had some sort of problem with them -- whether it was buttons not working or the game simply being off. I have to say I was really disappointed, and I definitely would not pay the entrance fee to go to DQ again.

Now there is a novel idea for a game. Think Splinter Cell or Halo, but instead of the camera being behind the hero or from the hero's eyes, you play the game from the perspective of the enemies. Note, however, that you aren't controlling the enemy -- you are actually controlling the hero...your POV is just from those of the enemy.

On second thought...maybe it's not a great idea after all.
