While I'll admit I'll be one of them that's buying the Revolution over the PS3, remember, the PS3 will have the back-catalog of ps2 and ps games, and that's a shit-load of games too y'know...
yeah, as full time mac and linux user, I understand all too well.
My laptop is a mac, but my main box for work, dev, play, etc is a debian linux machine. Out of curiousity, has anyone tried using the web-based packages for turbo tax on linux? do they work?
perhaps. But are there hybrid tax packages for all countries out there. ALso, I seem to remember that turbo tax for mac is a bit more expensive than the win version (though I could be mistaken on that point)...
I see this comment on every thread dealing with this. Here are the answers:
1)Why not? It's geeky, it's fun, it's what being a nerd is all about.
2)Games. What if you want to be productive on OSX but want to reboot to play some win-only games every so often
3)tax software. This is a big one for this, why bother buying a win machine for something you do once a year when you can just install win on your nice mac.
4)Some people honestly like apple hardware but need to run windows. Try finding a non-apple box with as small a desk footprint as a mac mini.
5)Along the same lines, people who do all their work on laptops and dont want to carry 2 laptops around can now just carry a macbook pro.
6)Quick compatability checks for software. Yes, I realize that for major cross platform dev you might want 2 boxes, but for quick checks (see the laptop comment too) this is invaluable.
There are more of course, thats off the top of my coffee-depirved head right now.
I'll repost something I posted here because it applies:
Interesting, as I've always felt that porn helps people relax and release tension. Like anything else, it can be addictive and too much can probably hurt you (though, like most things, too mcuh is dependant on the indivdual). It's also certainly good for couples when it's watched together (and is something both enjoy watching).
There is also the old reality/VR argument. Like video games, there is a significant difference between porn and reality. The problem comes when people can't differentiate between the two. In porn's case I'd argue that the lack of sex ed in schools probably contributes to that, as people develope their ideas about sex from pornos without having been taught anything about the reality of it (the "you mean all gals arent completely shaven, enjoy teh buttsecks, and like facials and giving blowjobs?!?!?!?" type mentality).
Porn is at its basic sense fantasy, and can actually sometimes be really funny if you understand that. Hell, my girlfriend and I spent a couple hours laughing at/critiquing some rather unrealistic and amusing porn this past weekend.
To bring this back on topic, regardless of one's views towards porn, filtering it is both impossible and a dangerous move to attempt. This is an area of parental responsibility, it should not be censored by the govt for us.
I believe the GP was using what is sometimes known as Sarcasm, though it could have also been seen as Irony, depending on the tone you read it in...:-P
I know you're not trolling, but in pointing out the grandparents err about windows, you made a bigger err in talking about osx.
OSX (nonx86) includes "classic" compatability, a system folder for OS9 that allows the ability to run os9,8, and 7 apps easily on OSX. It runs at native speeds and I know of very few apps which dont run properly in it. The only differnce between it and the dos/win3.1 compat in win2k/xp is that it's fully ingrained in windows and windows starts the emulation at startup so its absolutely transparent, while OSX only brings up "classic" if you run a pre-osx app.
OSX86 dropped the compatability with OS9, (though I suppose if you need it, you can use basilisk and/or vmware), but is fine for any OSXPPC apps, allowing for a performance hit (using rosetta, and btw win lacks anything like this, whih is why there is almost no software for NT on alpha).
It can't be sold for extra, there is no firewire support *at all* in newer iPods. The reason, as others have pointed out, is the bulk of the firewire chipset was preventing iPods from becoming smaller. There simply wasnt room in the nano/iPod with video to cram the firewire chipset in.
You are partially right, they dropped firewire as opposed to t usb because
a)firewire takes up more space and
b)usb is on more computers
In terms of parts, I should add that for g4/g3 towers at least, sonnet makes replacement CPUs and from them and others you can easily find plenty of third party pci cards to do anything you want.
In addition to HDs, optical drives in almost all macs that I know of have third party replacements, and while you usually have to buy the "mac version", you can easily find aftermarket video-cards for mac desktops.
As I said before, ram is standard. About the only thing that isnt easily findable as a replacement on most macs is the motherboard, which would also be true on many cases that PC manufacturers ship, where the mobo is engineered to fit in the case...
My experiance on the phone with apple (given, I have applecare) was very positive. They have friendly, knowledgeable people who *speak english*. More knowledgeable than in the store I've found btw.
I had a similar problem with the screen (also had the infamous problem with the latch) on my 15inch alBook when I first got it, I called apple up and they repaired it free of charge. Sent me a box, sent it to them in a box, they sent it back fixed. Took a grand total of a week all told.
You can make apointments on their website in advance for the "genius bar" btw, no waiting on line at the store, just show up when your apointment time is. Never had any probs with this.
What parts? I have a mac laptop, not much I'm going to be upgrading on it. The stuff I will be, hard-disk and ram, are standard parts found anywhere.
As for repair, that's warranty/applecare is *for*. If you buy a dell, you want to get the three year warranty for extra $$$ too, or they'll do the same thing to you. That is unless you want to a) repair it yourself or b) go to a non-authorized repairer (both of which you can do with macs too).
While I havent gone through apple's repair training program, there's a hell of a lot of technical info on macs/osx on the web, much of it offered up free by Apple (and plenty not offered up by apple, but easily findable).
Lastly, how can it be illegal price-fixing, Apple does not have a monopoly on the computer market by a long shot. If you want a mac, you pay Apple's prices. If you just want a cheap computer, go somewhere else. You are not *entitled* to a cheap mac, whatever you may think.
I would assume there are plans for these, would seem to make sense based on their naming convention. Goodbye mhz race, hello core race (not that it hasnt been on for a while:-P).
Plus when your HDD dies.. you cant regain your music.
Not completely true, you can back up your files and then just re-auth them. That's apple's way. If you want dubious legality, songs bought on all but the newest version of iTunes can be unprotected with jHymn easily. Apple made unobtrusive, easy to remove DRM for a reason.
Amen, my favorite console game series is soul reaver/LOK, not so much because of the gameplay (though that is good) but because it's got a great plot that's fully intermeshed into the game. I wish we'd get more games like that as opposed to the crap that the game companies usually churn out with the selling point of better graphics/cooler cinematics.
::sigh:: POWER is alive and well, and Apple is certainly not the only vendor, in fact they're a minor reseller. I love Apple POWER based machines, I have a g4 powerbook and love it, but honestly POWER is being pushed far more by, say, the fact that all 3 of the next gen game consoles are POWER based, or the massive amount of ppc based servers sold by IBM, or the various integrated circutry that uses paired down ppc architecture.
Frankly, to IBM, Apple's business was almost insignificant, they sell far more CPUs elsewhere than they ever did to Apple...
Apple didnt kill ppc, they never had it to kill. Sure, there won't be many all purpose consumer ppc based machines when Apple is done killing their ppc lines, but the Architecture as a whole is alive and thriving, and far more ppl will buy the Xbox360, the PS3, or the Revolution than would ever buy Apple...
I'm anti-porn, I think it damages peoples minds, but I don't like this either.

It's become a brand name as much as an architecture. For example, how much would you like to bet that apple will keep the "power" name for the professional line long after they've shifted away from POWER and onto intel...
That would in turn imply that the size of the Linux community is bigger than 2.5% - 5% of the total Internet community.
You forgot that there a lot more routers out there than WRT54Gs (and people with no router)... You need to factor the percentage of internet users with WRT54Gs into you calculations. I expect that it represents less than 20% (less than 10? 5?) of the internet population.
While I'll admit I'll be one of them that's buying the Revolution over the PS3, remember, the PS3 will have the back-catalog of ps2 and ps games, and that's a shit-load of games too y'know...

Yes. For the wars and for burning karma :-P
Are you saying it renders flames *very* realistically? :-P

Ask and ye shall recieve, go here. Cheers!
AFAIK the 64-bit version comes out later this year, it's most likely what Apple is waiting for before updating the pmac line...

I'd say "find another bridge to sit under" but you'd prolly have to have some knowledge of history to decide what was a good bridge.
This is both News for Nerds, and Stuff that Matters. Go away. Sit under your crappy bridge and wait for the Billy Goats Gruff.

Great, now on Apr. 1st we won't know if it's a joke or not!
OTOH, they could call it the foolPod or iFool something
What use would Apple have for Palm, exactly?
Brand recognition in the PDA world, PDA devs, and marketshare.
That said, I seriously doubt this is going to happen or that the reasons I mentioned would be enough for apple to buy palm.
