  1. Re:Seriously.... on How Apple Rumors Became Reality · · Score: 2, Interesting
At the risk of stating the completely obvious, launches of new Apple kit in a keynote is a big deal. It allows Apple to stage manage the launch, and it also creates a buzz that no-one else in consumer electronics gets. I was there pressing reload on the live blogs from the keynote, and I'm far from a fanboy- I've never bought anything from Apple.

If everyone knows the secrets, all of this is lost. However, just like the kid shaking the presents before Christmas morning, everyone wants to know what they are going to get. And besides, if you've got a secret, everybody always wants to know what it is- it's human nature. Once you know it of course, it's not so interesting.

Sure Cisco is not the cheapest or the best, but they provide a complete end-to-end solution and everyone knows Cisco.

That's it in a nutshell, and it's a real shame. Cisco is the new "nobody got fired buying IBM". People are just so scared to try anything else on their networks, and it really holds back competition. Got a budget to build a network? Buy a Cisco, and no one will blame you. If it goes wrong, well hey, you did the industry standard thing- that's just how networks work, right?

Spot on. The most important measure is market share. If your website is being viewed 40% by Firefox, then you are going to make sure it works in Firefox. And in Firefox's case, that means it works according to web standards.

That's how Firefox will improve the web (fingers crossed)

  19. Re:I would consider... on Atom 1.0 vs RSS 2.0 · · Score: 5, Informative

RSS and Atom are standardised ways of having a live list of stories appear from say a newssite (like this one) in various programs. Firefox calls these live bookmarks. I came here using firefox by clicking on my toolbar, seeing all of the new stories, and deciding I was interested in this one. You can also use it for desktop "news ticker" applets.

The trouble with RSS (short answer) is that there are at least three different versions of it invented by different people. As far as I know there was an RSS 0.7, then someone else invented a new protocol and called it RSS 1, then the original person invented RSS and called it version 2, but some people argue 2 is worse than 1 :(. All of these standard's owners have been accused of not taking on board comments from the wider community.

Atom is another protocol for doing the same thing. Technical issues aside, it gets my vote because they didn't decide to call it RSS 3. Or RSS 10.

No it doesn't. It just means that you can't distribute the results. This is a common GPL misconception. GPL only has any effect when you distribute your binaries. "You" in this case can mean your company or organisation.
