  1. Re:Problems on Vertical Farming · · Score: 1

I agree that marijuana farmers are innovative. But they are constrained by artificial barriers (laws). If marijuana farmers had to compete in the free market they would be using the same techniques as ADM or OreIda. People are willing to do expensive impractical things (like growing in a basement under artificial light) because they can charge enough for the product to recover the costs. The only way this type of farming would succeed is as a boutique industry with people growing baby carrots ands micro-greens that they can ship to overpriced restaurants which sell them at a premium cause they are fresh picked. Now - growing shrimp or fish in basements where there is no competing interests (residential or retail) might be more practical. You can feed tilapia or shrimp waste food from the restaurants - then sell them back the fish .

Cars consume fuel inefficiently because the engine is burdened with an entire superstructure (tires, wheels, frame) to to haul one or two people butts around individually. There is nothing intelligent about this concept. Except for the auto manufacturers who continue to promote this profitable approach. The intelligent solution will come when a method is developed to maintain the concept of personal freedom while consolidating the power distribution. I have seen ideas for unpowered "cars" that attach to each other train-like, based on destination, and latch on to common powered pusher or puller units.

Evolution is a theory (duh) - because it is very hard to prove/proof. Evolution occurs over a looonnnnggg period of time. Making it damn near impossible to prove in a lab with creatures that have a substantial life spans (with reproducibility). Field studies demonstrate micro-evolution which shows the progression of traits within a species (the formerly white moths on the chalk cliffs of dover turning darker with the increase in pollution turning the cliffs darker). Macro evolution is the biggy - how can we prove that new species will evolve given enough time. The fossil record is valuable - but its sure not reproducible. Collecting evidence that shows that change is occuring in recent time - well that goes to bolster the evidence showing modern humans are the result of evolution

CS is definitely a field where social skills - while useful - will not be rewarded as well as they would in management or other professions.
Women are no less capable of handling the intellectual requirements of CS - its the lack of reward for social skills (that they are traditionally praised for) that I think might make them feel less inclined. "...I know I can do it, its just not rewarding..." This is why I feel those that do persist in CS tend to be drawn to engineering sales, program management and leadership.
