Its worth it to consider the concepts that Marshall MacLuhan developed concerning Media. His description of media being Hot or Cold is relevant. The television was hot and the print media was cold. Hot media has an inverse affect on our minds - it required less involvement and interraction. Whereas Cold media like a book required our mind to be active... What does this character look like, sound like... our minds are energized. Hot media like tv is "...relax and leave the driving to us..." How this can possibly activate our minds is beyond me.

IQ is a term that we use very assuredly in our culture. But it is not a term/concept that has a very rational history. IQ was developed by a Dr. Binet years ago to identify "children" who might be at risk for learning problems. It was never intended to measure adult abilities. In fact it was not intended to indicate absolute ability only relative ability among same age children. The US Army can take credit for asking Stanford to modify Binets work and use it to measure recruits for possible placement in OTS.

IQ is a concept that has become "re-ified" that is made to appear "real" through the use of numbers and statistics that are lain on top of a questionable concept. What exactly is the IQ a measure of?

I tried to summarize this idea from Stephen Jay Goulds very important book "The Mismeasure of Man"

As such professionals are given to arguing for reinterpretation and layman are prone to min-interpretation. The current disorder is defined as "AntiSocial personality Disorder" which overlays both. Mental disorders don''t tend to fit into nice categories.

For a more current reference read the reports about the BTK killer. Although not yet legally defined as a socio/psycho path he certainly demonstrates the hallmarks.

But I see little discussion about what makes a College a College. TEACHERS. Where else you going to find an institution where at least some portion of the employees (albeit sometimes woefully low) are personally dedicated to making you smarter? College sadly has been turned into an investment device - where its worth is measured in likelyhood of future revenues. I fell prey to that thinking too often in college. And as a result wasted much of my time in college rushing through classes trying to get out of college as soon as possible. Only one chance in your life to be young, impressionable and unburdened and college is a great place to be at that time.

Other cultures find the "Fair Deal" concept laughable.
