  1. New Approach on Randomly Generated Paper Accepted to Conference · · Score: 1

new developments in hardware acceleration using AI. reminds me of homer simpson episode. Mepis Roolz. Saw this posted on scientific american years ago. RIAA is the antichrist. Check here if slashdotted M$ never had an original thought, Gates is the antichrist, Balmer is his evil minion. Linus said at a recent conference. Dude that made Goatse look mild.

  2. Racism and Polygenism on Global DNA Project to Study Human Ancestry · · Score: 4, Insightful

One concern is that the folks may pervert the finding of this data to support one of two equally corrupt conclusions. One that finding a single lineage of all people (monogenism) endorses the Judeo-Christian beliefs in Adam & Eve. Or two that multiple sources of origin (polyenism) can justify racism - in that some lineages are "less" evolved than others. The dangers of these ideas are well documented by Louis Menand in his wonderful book "The Metaphysical Club"

Great story about Daphne Oram of the BBC RadioPhonics laboratory. She came up with a similarly inspired musical-thingy in the late 50's. Albeit entirely analog (analogue?) http://www.obsolete.com/120_years/machines/oramics /

  5. Angelina Jolie? on Joss Whedon to Write/Direct Wonder Woman · · Score: 1

I know she's big money now - but she looks like wonder woman. She has the Stoicism of wonder woman and she can take a risk. its sort of irrelevant to this discussion - but you guys know that WW is an Amazon - and Amazona is derived from Amastos - meaning women without breast(s). Presumed to mean that they ritually removed one breast so they could fire a bow and arrow better. Doubt that would make in the movie though

  10. Re:About TiVo on Can TiVo be Saved? · · Score: 1

TiVo is great technology. But without any changes it will be suppplanted by cheaper more conveniet service from the cable/Sat providers. I suspect that a strong shot of glamour would help. TiVos today fade into the wall of consumer electronics. If they could focus on a sexier image - like a MacMini or iPod for the TV. TiVo could become a style statement.

  11. Re:Nothing like a good controversy... on Student RFID Tracking Suspended from School · · Score: 1

I am interested in what both the Supplier and the customer saw as the problem they were solving. I have not heard of any sensational missing student news stories. Was there some promise of huge cost savings in having an automated school attendance system, doubtful. This system would not be effective in child abductions, as it does not nothing to deter the bad guys. Why the time and money?

  15. The tyranny of a great idea on Linux in a World Where Windows 3.0 Never Happened · · Score: 2, Insightful

Genius is a dangerous thing you have to be very careful where you point it. When somebody does something great we so desperately want to apply it. That we forget to think about where it should be applied.

  16. Re:Congratulations on Is Computer-Created Art, Art? · · Score: 2, Insightful

the computer is a medium. According to McLuhan, a medium is anything that extends the hand of the creator. The computer is no more relevant to the creation of the art than the number of bristles on the paintbrush. You initiated the act of creating something. When a computer creates somehing of its own freewill(?) to satisfy its own desires of expression well then we cna debate over whether computer art is art.

  17. Re:More white bread, please! on AI Bots Pick The Hits of Tomorrow · · Score: 1

"Commodification of Cool" was the line I remember attributed to Lester Bangs in Almost Famous. The music industry brands and delivers sound - the aesthetics is irrelevant. Popular music is not art. It never has been. Britney Spears delivers music like Taco Bell delivers food. Its not the music its the package. If you want to get real food or real music you have to get inconvience yourself, turn off the car radio. and try something that might be diifferent.
