(from what I could understand of the poorly translated article) the police were involved because there was illegal/criminal material being shared (kiddie-pr0n), and the people sharing music were just a bonus.
I couldnt see where in the article that the server was being run by RIAA(or similar organisation) as another poster suggested.
Is copying music a criminal or civil offense in Germany? And do their police get involved in catching breakers of civil laws as well as the breakers of criminal laws?
is what you are looking for. Get to compete/play against other people from all around the world to the same song. It doesnt have web-cam integration (yet, maybe oneday?) and most people use ventrillo (or some such) to chat whilest playing or between games. The game moderates each players scores and gives a ranking at the end.
The format of Zzap64 and Crash were a popular one for the Newsfield publications.
There were many things that I enjoyed about Zzap, from the game reviews, interviews with developers and diary of a game specials. Ah the nostalgia:)
I currently like the Retro Gamer mag that is being produced as it feels similar but has a more historic and informative feel. And has less ads than most of the other game mags out there right now. Plus the Oliver Frey cover art is great.
is what i found in one of the retro gaming magazines a while ago, that being something like a geneology tree of the various gaming genres. So you could see what games were inspired by others and how the genre changed over time.
For example there was a tree for one-on-one fighting games: with Way of the Exploding Fist, Internation Karate and Barbarian with it branching out to Tekken, Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur.
But otherwise the book sounds quite interesting and I'll probably try to find it.
Just a few weeks ago. The technical issues that affect game play were part of it. And also partly it was that the gameplay was hollow and not worth repeating with another character. Also having real life friends playing on separate servers was a pain cause no one wanted to make new characters on the same server to play together when they'd invested so much time getting their main character to 60.
I had a think and put the whole thing in perspective. The time that I'd sunk into my main lvl 60 character was a bit over 20 days.
I then figured out how much time I spent playing a d&d campaign with friends almost every weekend for about 8 hours a session, and that was over 2 years, before we got burned out and lost enthusiasm. It was approximately 800 hours, give or take. So that would be maybe 33 days. I dont care about the pieces of paper that was my character nor the phat loot that he acquired in all his adventures. It was fun time spent with friends that mattered to me.
After thinking about it like that, when it came to cancelling my account and deleting my characters from WoW, it was a lot easier for me, and some what cathartic as well.
Interesting article about marriage resulting in contentment for guys and thus lowering their testosterone, and thus reducing their creative output.
I wonder if for guys that then get divorced do their testosterone levels go back up cause they have to compete for female attention again, and this also spark their creativity again?
From personal experience, I did less art whilest married. And now that I'm single again I've done more pieces and IMO I think they are a whole lot more pleasing to look at than the ones I did in my late teens/early twenties. So in answer to my own question I would suspect that it would be yes. Any one else have any thoughts?
when is there going to be a decent ninja's vs pirates game then?

Region-free PS3

But there are games that are not available in my local area or even country for that matter (Australia). For example, all but 1 of the DDR games for the PS2 that are available in the US are not available here, and there is unlikely to be a release here of them.
Now if the PS2 were not region locked, then I'd have happily imported the games from the US to play. This situation led me to investigate alternatives and get hold of a ps2->usb converter for my pc and use stepmania.
Some sort of related questions from the peanut gallery:)
Why does steel and iron react so well to magnetic fields? Is that because of the Fe ions?
And would this still be effective once the wires had been transformed into plasma and being contained by the magnetic fields of the experiment? If so, would the energy of the magnetic field(s) be contributing?
Nah... You just need to tie in some rewards system of giving you points that can be redeamable for some nice shiney toys:) That'll get peoples (aka the living room sheep) details.
I just want to karma whore:P And I dont care about what laws you try and pass to make me shut up, cause no one listens to what I say.
Part of starroms problems was that they were competing with the copyright holders, several of whom are now releasing compilations of 25-30 games for the ps2 and xbox. These are generally (IMO) better presented and more accessable to the casual gamer market, than trying to get an emulator setup correctly and acquire the roms. Plus they're all legal arcade versions (except the lame midway classics 3 racing bundle with console ports of some games)
I've purchased all of these compilations that I've been able to find in Australia for my ps2 and have had much retrogaming fun and been able to share that with my son and friends, especially the 3 or 4 player games like gauntlet or rampage.
If you have your AMD machine run a session of a virtual intel machine, wouldn't the call from the skype application to check processor version hit the virtualised processor and think it was intel?
Else, i'm sure some hacker would come up with some application that waited for the call to check the processor version and intercept it and return the preferred result.
1) open accountability - anyone should be able to see a list of any other players transactions that have occured in game. Then fellow guild members would be able to apply social pressure to the people who buy gold. aka - "Friends dont let friends buy gold"
2) built in bablephish/translator - enter a sentence in one language and have them be able to be sent to the communication channel of choice. This would help brake down communication barriers.
As for how difficult it would be to implement either of these, I'm not so sure, but for the translator, it might be possible to develop a UI mod that passed the sentence to a server that does translations.
Yes, the planet's gotten a bit hot. Stepping out in january wearing a spring jacket tells us that.
Thats for you northern hemispherians. In Canberra - Australia, we've just had many hotter than average days this month, and its looking very likely it will be the hottest January on record in my opinion.
Also, in the last year we've had a large reduction in the number of winter frosts, approx 20 less days than the previous year.
Our media here is just starting to make noise about these issues, so eventually either our current government or the next will start to wake up and address them.
Maybe the original article is grandstanding or overreacting, but until everyone in the general community starts talking about it more and changing their lifestyles, there will be more informed people trying to get attention.
But seriously, why bother? Most mice in the medium price bracket are more than suitable for twitch/fps gaming. IMHO the controller is not going to make a lick of difference, but actually practicing and playing the game lots will do more for improving your performance. Plus reading up on strategy (and not necessarily game specific) also helps.
As an example to illustrate the point, a friend of mine groks the genre of 1-on-1 fighting games (streetfighter, soul calibur, etc) and regardless of the system or controller or game, he just smashes me and all my friends, even though some of us have practiced and specialised (in characters or games), whilest he's only just seen the game. But conversly, in other types of games we get our revenge.
Next time we get to suggest somebody for a slashdot interview, can we try get Steve??? I'm sure most of the/. gamer crowd would be able to brainstorm a better set of questions.
actually, the only dangerous thing about the idea is that it is off topic and the rest of the slashdot crowd will flame me for it:) but i just wanted to float the idea, and maybe someone else will have a suggestion of how to make it dangerous.
Anyway, the idea is said balloon would be able change shape to: - be squeezed to expell all the gas inside downwards to provide thrust, once the ballon has risen as high into the atmosphere as possible, and to leave a planets gravity. - be deployed as a solar sail - be spread out as a parachute to land on planets with atmospheres
either: 1) there will be hack's or backdoors to circumvent and misuse this and thus it will be discarded or 2) it will end up allowing everyone of us to shine the light at anyone we meet online and possitively identify someone.
How could one set up a network where identity is unable to be falsified? And also to record all transactions?
I only vaguely recall reading 'The Transparent Society' by David Brin, my copy has gone missing:( Surely some of the points he raised in the book are appropriate to this discussion?
I thought that was only to be practiced by consenting adults.... /ducks
