  2. Re:Definition of violence on Harvard Phd Vs. About.com over Gaming · · Score: 1

Was having a re-think on the chess part of my comment. It could be argued that you are just 'capturing' the pieces, rather than destroying them. But I guess Battlechess would be a contradiction to that arguement. :-)

Also, I'm wondering about wether the representation of the tokens/objects in the game influenced the way the study was carried out. For the Pacman example, if the ghosts and pacman had been replaced with coloured blobs, and the death animation of the players object just faded away instead, would it have still scored as highly in the study? Because I vaguely recall her mentioning the ghosts in regards to how a 3 year old perceives them, and has trouble differentiating reality from fantasy.

  3. Definition of violence on Harvard Phd Vs. About.com over Gaming · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think it comes down to how the Dr T defines violence. It had little to do with how graphicly it was depicted but how it related to the experience of playing the game, like the winning and loosing conditions and the interaction between the game objects. As for how valid that view is, is open to opinion. Ditto with how much violence seen or acted out is good for a person.

So for pacman, eating dots being the primary goal isnt violent, eating a power pill and then eating ghosts a supporting goal is violent, and getting caught by a ghost to loose a life is also violent. The fact that the violence was not portrayed in a realistic or gruesome manner was not considered.

Thus by her definition, Space Invaders, chess, Quake would all easily out rank pacman for violence because the primary goal is eliminate/kill an enemy, and the loss condition being death of the players avatar. Where as solitaire, most racing games, or DDR would be almost devoid of violence.

The best bit about her reply was saying that the parents of kids are ultimately responsible for what they let their kids play.

Regardless of what Dr T said to some senate committee, it will be perverted/given spin by the politicians for their own means.

Make art because you love it, not because you love money. If you love something, set it free!

While I agree with you sentiment, there are things that make it harder to do that.

To be great at ones art, you have to practice it everyday, and that usually requires being able to sell it to pay for living expenses. On the other hand, as in my case, I have to work in a 9-5 job to pay for living, and my art comes afterwards and I do it because I enjoy it, it isnt as good as it could be but is still good as I've got some talent. I can thus afford to make my art available for others for free in a way (plug for my profile on dA).

If I had the opportunity to sell some of my works or license them for royalties, I probably would, and could possibly consider quiting my day job and work on my art full time as I enjoy doing it.

I did once think that maybe I could just collect donations from people who've seen my work, but, alas, I have the hunch the vast majority of people wouldnt give money to someone that they've obtained something for free. Though I have seen street artists/performers struggle in many cities, so maybe it could be possible, but not able to afford my modest lifestyle.

Whilest in principle I would agree the German games are more original, I disagree partly with the Carcassonne franchise as it has been getting several re-hashes/tweeking with the 'Hunters and Gatherers', 'The Castle', 'The City', 'Arc of the Covenant' variations, and to be honest having played them, they are pretty much the same game with slight changes to rules/mechanics.

The original was the best version. And all the expansions to the original base game do help with its longevity, but at some point it became like all the other popular games getting stupid numbers of expansions. Milk that cash cow!

I prefer Peurto Rico as it has better multi-player mechanics, as what you do affects the other players.

I concur that Ratchet and Clank are great. And they are 3d platforms mixed with combat. Having played all but the first one of the series, I'd say that they each had good stories, lots of fun levels and interesting diversions with various vehicle combat. The thing was that interesting in some levels was the ability to walking up a wall onto the ceiling, or the small moons/asteroid levels where you got to jump around in low gravity, which made the experience much more refreshing from a regular 2d platformer.

And I recommend the remake of head over heels to download for your pc, which updates the gfx and sound from the original versions.

I'd heard a rumour of there being a hybrid machine which combined both the ddr mat and the parapara motion sensors, which would be an interesting game to try. Also there is a ddr / singstar hybrid in a arcade hall(?) in japan called Dance Dance Revolution Karaoke Mix.

But its hardly suprising that people are trying to get various rythym games to work together.
I'm willing to bet that eventually you'll be able to have all the various rythym games linkable to do an entire band line up with accompanying dancers.

What is lacking in the dancing games is tutorials about dancing styles like waltz, salsa or rock'n'roll, where you dance with a partner. Wait a sec... this is slashdot.... hmmm.. wonder if how well the asimo can dance?...

IANAL so I now have a bunch of questions about the point you raised over the dA agreement that allows them to modify content. For reference the submission agreement http://about.deviantart.com/policy/submission/

Under 3e it states : Artist acknowledges that Artist will not have any right, title, or interest in any other materials with which Artist Materials may be combined or into which all or any portion of Artist Materials may be incorporated.

So does that part of the agreement absolve me of responsibility for a work which has been modified by dA?

Or only in the case of when its been combined with other works?

And if the worst case situation was that I was liable, would I have to go to the USA for the court proceedings? Or would they be held in Australia where I live?

Lastly, if in court I was able to provide the physical originals of my pictures that were scanned and then sent to the dA server, would this count for anything in my defence?

  17. OT: deviantArt on Why YouTube Needs the Rights to Your Video · · Score: 4, Informative

As an artist that has put up stuff on dA, I'd like to say that originally I was loathe to put 'content' up there, but as I thought about wether I wanted exposure or to retain complete control/ownership I decided that I'd rather get exposure. But I have chosen which works I wanted to put up there, which is primarily my older works, and have several recent pieces that I wont put up as I feel they are superior to my earlier ones.

And its not like dA have total ownership of the pieces I've put up, IIRC they have a limited license to cover themselves legally, and I can still put up the pictures on another site if I choose. One day when I decide to upgrade my membership there so I can sell prints, dA will still only have a limited license and I could still sell prints at local markets/fairs.

Maybe I'm going about this wrong, as I'm not 100% sure of what is the right way to do this, so if anyone from the /. gallery wants to comment, feel free.
