I firmly believe what comes around goes around. If not in this life then the next. It definately sucks though to be in that position or to work for one of these companies
If someone in a third world country is working all the hours God gives, just to keep his family fed living in a mud hut, surely it's not too much to ask for a spoilt American to put in a comparable amount of hours for his life in a large, air-conditioned house with fresh food, electricity, indoor plumbing, Internet, SUV and all the luxuries associated with living in America.
While i see your gripe to some extent, all I want is to make enough money so I don't have to worry about living from paycheck to paycheck and not have to be at work 90+hours a week. I said it before but the cost of living is higher so we need the higher wages. If I can obtain my goal on 10 cents an hour instead of the 40-80k i need depending on location I'll gladly take it. I don't feel that's an unreasonable goal either.
I don't know how it is in other countries, I'm assuming its not like here where you NEED A CAR to even get to work. In most places, its not like you can walk down the block and be at your place of business. Were talking about miles here and since public transportation is weak outside big cities, there is only one way. Yes SUVS are unnecessary but for the MAJORITY of people who don't have SUV's, even a used car will cost you thousands a year to buy/and maintain.
And not everyone here is living the good life. Trust me I've seen some places here where i would rather live in a mud hut. We have poor too but because were known as a rich nation and we have to help the poor in other countries first because that's what the world expects, our poor gets overlooked.
No matter how much you complain, you have no right to a better existence than anyone else on this planet just because of which country you were born in. If this were a discussion about restrictions on international Internet traffic and trade, all the slashbots would be saying how it's a terrible thing, that borders between countries are an obsolete concept, and they should be allowed to download and import all the obscene anime they want. But as soon as their employer thinks their job would be done better by someone overseas, they want 3-mile high walls erected around the borders whilst waving the stars and stripes.
Listen I feel your right. No one person anywhere is entitled to a better existence than anyone else. But when it comes to the end of the day, as much as I hate to say it you have to look out for yourself because no one else will. Big business isn't going to take care of me, the gov won't, you def won't give a fuck if i live or die and why should you.
So to end, I somehow feel if you lost your job to be taking by another country or country man for tha manner, you wouldnt feel all happy and giddy about it either.
I love you brotha in a non-gay sort of way. What you summed up so wonderfully is one of the reasons why I'm looking to leave my current job. There is only 2 of us doing I.T. work for this small company and we handle EVERYTHING for 70 people and 100+ computers with almost every os you can think of. I'm overstressed and since the dumb CEO doesnt like to hire "overhead" cause he is cheap, there will never be more than 2 of us
Fact is once I find a new job, I know they won't hold the position for long and I can careless. Let them deal with the mess they created for themselves. You reap what you sow. I feel bad for the other I.T. guy I would leave behind. He's stuck there because he's a foreigner on a work visa. My company has many employees in a stranglehold because they are on work visas and can't go anywhere.
That's the problem with greed and companies like those in Silicon Valley and mine. Everyone looks at short term cost savings measure not realizing one day it'll bite them in the ass.
The whole way business is done and why we experience a recession can be summarized in one word....GREED!
VOIP doesn't stay up if the power goes out for a considerable period of time.
We recently experienced that problem at my office. Transformer was going bad and in several circumstances power was out for as much as 5 hours. My company is stupid at times. We didn't have any phones connected to analog lines so all we had to rely on was cell phones.
Point is, until it shows itself reliable and stable 24/7 as analog, analog will be around in some form.
the loophole here if you ask me is that we're talking about 2 companies with seemingly unlimited pocket books in their corner and thus neither one of the two will drive the other one out of business in our lifetime.
of course nintendo could possibly be knocked out by this but i guess so long as you have 2, that's competition enough for the gov...
considering i hate ms with a passion at this point yes! i'll compromise though, i wouldnt mind a 50/50 between sony and nintendo:) just leave m$ and their world dominating ways out of the picture.
I said it time after time I still feel M$ biggest problem is neglecting their os line and trying to get their hands in stuff that is "hot" at the moment.
And naturally their attempts to come up with the "better" product is half ass since they rather just throw something out quickly just to compete rather than focusing on making a quality product.
So to conclude, here's a fucking idea Ballmer, how about you try to get longhorn released sometime this decade before you decide to become relevent along side with google or whatever other business is out there you'll compete with in the future or buy out just because it gets your off.
Nevermind that when the line goes down your screwed big time as is the case here but how in the world can you function on one line normally? Wouldn't the bandwidth of a country be too great for one line to handle? Hell we had to expand to 3 t-one lines in my office because we were hogging too much bandwith with 2 lines, an office of 70 people.
I know that they use fiber or what not but can the cable really handle all that bandwidth? Maybe this incident did the people a favor. "Yay, my page downloads in less then a second now with an error than the 30 minutes it took before!"
I don't know what they're smoking in the court these days, but it must be good
There not smoking anything, there just all old and senial and prolly high of theie prescription pills they need to survive.
Any how, the "making a piece of software that's marketed as a vehicle for copyright infringement is illegal" is still way too vague. I mean you can make a p2p software, and not market it for a means to download copyrighted material but as a means to share freeware and such and by that definition, its perfectly legal since it isnt being marketed as a vehicle for copyright infringement.
That's what I did with my new machine. My new motherboard has a raid controller on it and I obtained 2 cheap sata hard drives for it. I don't care much about performance, I just wanted a back up incase one of the disks decides to die......
We in the West need to wake up, start thinking more innovatively, and compete with our best tools: our creativity, education, and tremendous freedom to explore new business opportunities.
That's the best thing I heard all day. Anyways what is IBM's profit margin looking like these days. I'm not sure if this is the case with IBM or not since I do not follow up on IBM's or other companies earnings but what annoys me about stories like this is the greed involved. You rake in billions upon billions each and ever year and unless your not making a profit, do you really need a cost cutting measure?
So what if you made 200 million less than last year if your still making a nice healthy profit. You know what, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE to grow your profit magins every year and you shouldn't make your employees suffor because you need that higher profit margin each and every year.
Now if IBM is genuinely losing money its another matter, but to f around because you made only 700mil in profits this year compared to 950 mil last year is just sickening and absurd.
I think its time we resurrect George Washington and the rest of our fore fathers from the dead because we need a new governemental structure.
I'm sorry but this government just isn't working out anymore. I can't fully blame the government because people has gotten to complacent with the way things are.
It's suppose to be we the people, a government for the people but when the people stop getting active and giving a fuck, i guess this is the end result of that.
All I want to say is the user needs to be educated. We can post and blurp and rant all we want the fact of the manner is if the user doesn't know and no one tells them, what do you expect?
Most people aren't computer savy and some are outright not smart but instead of taking the time to educate the user "no you shouldn't do this because..." we here on slashdot like to insult them with " ooo GAWD you dont know what a firewall is, you fn moron you shouldnt even own a computer".
So unless the person is a prick, help out. If you want to get technical we are all responsible for this mess. Whats worse, not knowing out of ignorance or letting your neighbor stay in ignorance when you very well know you could of easily helped them?
American workers are expensive to hire because the cost of living is too high. Salaries will always be reflected by the cost of living so until the price of living comes down, salaries won't. Of course this doesnt aplly to retail or fast food since you can never get paid enough there to maintain a living.
It's not as easy as you think to start up a business. The truth is most businesses fail within the first 5 years. You need more than a salesperson and a half ass idea. You need capital to get the business up and running, and you need to know how business operate. Budgeting, ordering the right amount of supplies, keeping inventory, hiring employees and know how to effectively manage them, etc.
Even if you do have a great idea but you do not know how to or have anyone to help you run the business side of things, you'll run yourself bankrupt. And if you do succeed, garuanteed others will have some sort of knock off on your idea, and now you have to worry about competitor B who set up shop 2 blocks down the road from you taking away your customers.....
It's stressful, the beginning process you'll literally have no life. It really is a daunting task which most people cannot or are not capable of handling.
Your right. I think this is a bad business strategy on the part of Microsoft.
Ok lets assume Microsoft managed to get some of their w2k customres switched to xp, now(once again assuming longhorn is released when it says it will be) how are you going to get the same people who just switched to xp switching to longhorn only a year later?
Of course the smart thing would be to drop w2k when longhorn comes out and push those people to longhorn. But when does big business, M$ included implemnet smart, sound strategies....
After all, you generally at least need a college degree to get a job in the news industry - I'm not sure how much you can trust your average high school dropout with access to a PC and a free blogger.com account
Now you had me up until this point. I don't need to point out a blunder bigger than Dan Rather, a respected newscaster. Sad truth is DTA, don't trust anyone. Don't forget news media outlets are owned so they are going to influence the news the way they want to and in a way that'll keep making them money.
It's one of the reasons why I don't follow up on the news unless its a major incident like 9/11. Yea so what if I stay misinformed or "not educated" in the eyes of some people. I don't need anyone to know there is corruption world wide including my own government nor do I need the news to know people die and get killed everyday.
Exactly. Its only inevitable that there will be some kind of growth. That's how the economy works on cycles, period of growth, period of decline, levels may vary, repeat process.
It's not a bad thing to invest in dotcom companies or tech companies like some wall street buffs may suggest. What is a BAD thing is to invest in unproven companies just because the market is "hot" for it so you can get rich quick. Or also invest in stocks that are overinflated because that particular sector is hot.
I graduated after the crash and let me tell you it was no picnic finding a job. Had to endure a year in blockbuster before I finally found something through luck no less.......I'm not compalining anymore because I'm sure there are many others worse off than me so I'm just considiring myself bless to at least get my foot in the door for something I enjoy doing.....
As much as I think its more of a money making scheme to not include a harddrive, it does have its advantages.
For one the point you made about peole wanting different sized is a good one. Another one is let's say Sony has a brainfart and included the ps3 with an ibm "deathstar" type harddrive. It'll be a hella lot easier to recall/replace an external drive than having to recall/replace the whole system.
This just in, putting your picture inside a frame may cause an unfavorable reaction to whoever is looking at it. The results can range from shreeks of horror, to nausea and an look of disdain on the viewers face. The fix is to burn the picture with the frame....
How does a freakin package gets lost in the first place!!! Yes I do feel citigroup is almost entirely at fault but I mean come on? Especially with the scanning technology nowadays, what the f did the guy do, leave it on the street corner and drove away? Or put it in the warhouse only to be engulfed by a black hole?
I've experienced missing packages in 2 cases, once for me and once for my parents. I believe both times the package was stolen(my parents package contained a computer from dell they shipped through the post office, dumbass dell, mine was a lcd monitor that never left the dhl warehouse and couldnt be found). Whose to say an ups employee for whatever reason didn't steal the package?
And on another note, why aren't more consumers, in this day of rampant identity theft, completely outraged by these events.
one word...SUE! i don't think it would be unreasonble if someone sued who had identity theft and blame it on the lack of care of data. i mean in a day and age where you can get millions for spilling cofee on yourself, anything is possible. i think the bad publicity of a court case will scare many other.
I have news for you: you're not that important unless you're a murderer/terrorist/filesharer!
THANK YOUU. I didn't read the article so If I didn't get anything right let me know, but the government has all the information they need now to obscure privacy. I would think the airlines keep records of every person flying, where they are flying to etc. You need a passport to fly, where's the out cry's on passports invading privacy? You need a license to drive where's the outcry "OOO MY PICTURE IS ON MY LICENSE.OO THE HUMANITY!" I just look at this as using new technology to incorporate or extend the same ideas that's been implented for decades.
Whoever is really that concerned about privacy, I suggest you start up a rally or contact your local senator. Yea you can say contacting them wont change a thing blah blah blah but you know what? I 'm 100% sure bitching on slashdot will do even less to change the laws.
I firmly believe what comes around goes around. If not in this life then the next. It definately sucks though to be in that position or to work for one of these companies
