    Case in point.
There is a street in Roseville, CA that was 50, then changed to 45, and now is 40. There are three hideouts where a motor cop can see you without being seen until it's too late. On any given day at least one of those is manned.

The city of Citrus Heights, CA lowered the max speed on *all* surface streets to 40, including streets that are 50 on either side of the city. This was claimed to be to reduce accidents. #1 accident in CH is red-light violations, not speed related accidents.

Anyone who claims that this is not revenue generation is ignorant or dim.

My normal use case for Netflix:
    Get DVD
    Rip DVD to server
package up DVD and send it back
stream DVD from server to TV(s)
delete the DVD when I don't want to watch it any more (and/or I need the space back).

It's a similar use case for purchased DVDs

I showed up to court with two charges:
Littering & Causing a fire hazard.
The judge asked my plea to both counts at once, to which I replied:
"To the count of causing a fire hazard, not guilty your honor, to the count of littering, guilty with an apology your honor."

    Summary:
It was raining and I was in a concrete jungle, no way my lit but out the window was a fire hazard.
Judge asked me what I meant by guilty with an apology, and I explained that of course I was sorry. Missed work, unpaid, drive down here, fees/fine, etc. Of course I was sorry and had I realized all the trouble it would cause me I wouldn't have done it, but I did do it and so I am guilty.

Judge vacated the fire charge and let me go with court costs only for the littering charge. Best shitty day ever ;)

not being able to run from the same disk has been a problem far longer than 5 years. Back in the 90's I got a copy of Spectre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectre_VR). I installed it on my machine and then discovered it could be networked (over SPX-IPX, Parallel port, or serial port), so I took another machine and networked it. After about 3 hours fiddling with the setup so the game could work I got an error about same copy on both machines and the game wouldn't run :(

So, DRM in the simple form like this has been around for ages.

In fact, they are read back. At the flash component level.

The flash cell is a charged gate. when programmed the uC in the flash device compares the charge state with a reference voltage. Not enough? Add more charge. Still not enough? Cell is bad, mark it (block level, so you lose xx bits for one bad one) and move on.

This is fairly high level and not exactly how it works, but close enough.
