While I agree that microsoft is rather underhanded in their buisness practices, the accusation of them stealing the windows concept from apple isn't true. Both apple and ms got the idea from xerox...
Couldn't resist. Though I do have to say that most people do freeze up in a crisis situation. This is not a positive thing. It also comes with a rather unfortunate side-effect. Law enforcement tends to look at anyone who *doesn't* freeze up (unless they are other law enforcement, paramedic, etc) as a suspect.
Case in point - my (now ex) fiance attempted suicide several years ago while we were out. I flagged down a passing car (got lucky. turns out it was a dispatcher on her way home) to get help. I also helped with medical care until the ambulance got there. I'll be the first to admit that part of me just wanted to break down, but my training helped me keep together (I grew up learning kung fu as well as a few other things) until she was in the ambulance and out of site.
The upshot of this - she's still alive. However, the sheriff who showed up on the scene started accusing me of having shot her because I seemed "too calm". He was trying to get me to confess on the scene while I was covered in the blood of someone I loved very much. This nearly got him beaten senseless by the first state trooper on the scene who saw me while i was administering first aid.
Off topic a little, I know, but I had to say that there are costs to forming a group of expectations. Not freezing up is a positive thing. Unfortunately, it comes with its own set of risks and dangers.
More like drink it and get the case of ameobic dysentery from hell. You think drinking the water in Mexico is bad because your body can't deal with the unfamiliar microbes? heh
"How many years did it take you improve your reading? From being a slow reader to being able to read for 10 hours straight? Also, how many days a week do you read? I burn out after like 2 hours reading lol."
If you're used to reading, it wouldn't take you 10 hours to finish a 500 page book. On a typpical day, I finish a 300 page paperback in about three or three and a half hours and still remember most of the detail.
But then again, to put memory in perspective (at least as far as mine is concerned), I ran across my old padlock for my high school locker (I graduated in 98 and haven't really used it since) and knew the combination the moment i picked it up.
Personally, I tend to read at least a little every day even if it's only 20 minutes or so when i have the time. Putting creative things *in* my head is a nice break from taking creative things out of it.
Personally, the TCP/IP author i perfer is Comer, but then that's what i cut my teeth on. Also doesn't hurt that Comer was the advisor of my favorite CS prof in my undergrad career. (because he not only knew what he was talking about, but he could also teach and made things interesting. Not an easy person to have classes with but fair and fascinating)
This kind of attitude I can agree with and I really do like seeing this sort of spin in an employer.
I work to get paid. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy what I do, but the main reason for me to work is so that I get paid and can buy those nifty things like food and clothing.
I give a reasonable amount of time for reasonable pay. I don't usually get in a huff about an extra few minutes on occasion because I realize that things happen. Just don't abuse that. Time outside of that, I would really rather be compensated. If I'm not, you might see me get a bit unhappy (and that's not a good thing. The lawyer in me tends to come out - I come by it naturally since I grew up around several not to mention that I grew up around buisness - my father was a president for a branch of the afl-cio in this area for several years and my mother was a buisness manager. Interesting pair, eh?)
Other than the pay, I expect to have the tools necessary to do my job. If the job requires that I have a laptop (wether that's so I can demo to people, if I have to do a little work on a trip, etc), then I expect that to be provided for the time which I need it. The same applies to internet connections and other assorted miscelany - if my job requires it, it should be delt with in some way. If dial up covers what I am required to do off-site, so be it. I'll use that for work and usually nothing more.
I enjoy what I do, but I don't do it for free unless I want to as a general rule (and I do occasionally do things outside of work gratis not to mention doing volunteer work in other areas on occasion). I don't expect unreal work conditions, but I do expect to be dealt with reasonably. Having said that, I salute you and wish I could say the same of several places I have known in the past.
Why would they complain legitimately? Most people really only see HTTPS for things like webmail and shopping online which most of the people in a normal organization should not be doing on company time anyway. If you start seeing legitimate exceptions, you allow *those* exceptions, but not everything.
Sorry. Been there, done that from the user *and* admin sides. It tends to work quite well.
Sure it does. Rabbits are self-replicating programs (which I have to admit are most amusing to write just to see how long it takes to lock up an old system):P
windows 3.x wasn't an operating system. it was basically a gui for dos. think about the fact that you had to exit windows and go to dos before you could turn off the computer. there are other reasons as well, but that's the easiest to show.
A guy that lived down the street from my grandmother when I was a kid had a crow that spoke. The amusing thing was that if a woman walked by, the bird would whistle and catcall. If a guy walked past... let's just say that your average sailor would blush.
I can only imagine having that one in an office. First ever case of sexual harassment charges being brought against an office pet heh
I actually like the walk to and from my car to the office. It allows me to get into something at least sort of like the proper mindset. The only time that I want to be closer to the building, parking wise, is if it's really raining or if I don't really feel all that well.
Other than that, the walk there from the far end of the lot doesn't bother me at all. =)
Not advancing is stagnation. Stagnation is death. ANYONE NEEDING ANY BLACKSMITH WORK THESE DAYS?
I know a couple of blacksmiths. I'm an apprentice as a hobby, actually. In the right market, they do very well. My master was a specialty shoer out west. He was actually able to make almost lame horses walk again. The other one is nationally acclaimed and has pieces in the Smithsonian.
Actually, looking back at the past actions of this government (prohibition, making marijuana illegal, etc), it would almost be safe to say that they're trying to play Big Brother again. Can't do this, shouldn't do that, A is unethical, and B is perverted. and you all know that we don't want perverts in this country (unless they are the ones running things).
If you can't convince them with logic, baffle them with bullshit so that they want what you want them to.
Who cares if porn is often looked at as long as it is porn involving consenting *adults*. Keeping children from looking at it is responsibility of the parents (so nobody can use that argument).
funny. in all the time i studied martial arts (kung fu) i never broke any bones in the training. bruises, welts, and the occasional pulled muscle or tendon yes, but nothing serious. if you get seriously injured during training it's because you did something REALLY poorly (unfortunately a lot of the teachers out there don't know what they're doing so it happens a lot more often than it should).
one of the most useful things it gives you in an urban area is looking like you are not the person they want to try to roll over. barring that, joint locks (which can easily lead to broken bones in multiple locations if you want them to and all you need is to get a grip on their thumb), small focused strikes to places like the temple or throat, and strikes along nerve centers work wonderfully. it tends to freak out people when they lay a hand on you and a moment later can't feel the arm because you hit just behind the wrist and in front of the elbow on the inside of the arm.
the most effective things to use in situations like that are often the simplest ones. of course, not looking like one punch would break you in half can help too.
They both spent a lot of time at Xerox PARC (which is where the ideas for things like that and the mouse were developed IIRC)

Wait a minute... This is slashdot, so girlfriends are mythical creatures. often moreso than unicorns =)

I generally direct it to tosspam@aol.com
It always seemed fitting to me heh

Point being, watch what you say.
CowboyNeal has spoken. The discussion can now end =)

Moore - not a fan. don't watch the movies.
No comment on the sex. draw your own conclusion

Nick-Berg video - honestly haven't heard of that one. it's what i get for being too busy most of the time.
