I think that y2k is at the bottom of the list, considering that it can't actually kill people; although if I were a programmer that had to rewrite millions of lines of code from scratch after the fact, I think I probably would kill myself.
When I read the headline, I thought it was this BT. Can you say music production nerd? This isn't the first time this has happened to me with the BT's. Especially on this site.
I dabble in image manipulation, but mainly i do music production on my computer. Mine's about 2 years old, too...Most of the time, it does great. However, once i get about 7-8 tracks in, depending on the kind of output, plus effects like reverb and compression, my CPU says, "Aw, HELL no!" and freezes my machine. Happened just yesterday..makes me wonder sometimes if 2 proc's might help.
I can't find a link, but
I'm about 95% sure I read in a magazine that Vin owns a favorable percentage of shares in the game studio and developed much of the plot.
Picture this:
What if I was a terrorist(This is purely hypothetical, I know in America you can be arrested just for saying terrorist), and I wanted to send a bomb in the mail. Now, knowing that the postal service is a better band than government agency(sorry, they really are great!), I'd want to send my package through FedEx. When the bomb got there, and the police wanted to find out who did it, couldn't they suopena(sp?) the fedex records to see if I sent the package? I think that ANY communication, regardless of the type, is insecure. Someone can always be listening.
My point is not to start a flame war, but address an issue which most people overlook, which is a lack of privacy.
I think if you communicate over a network that is regulated by the company itself, as well as a federal orginization, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy. (like now)
that the tens of thousands of geeks out there can compete to meet with the one of the 2 geek girls in the world so the possibility of the uber geek child can become a reality.
But if you think your personal details disappear as soon as you hit the Return key, think again: they can sit on the computer's hard disk for years waiting for a hacker to rip them off.
So, then, we're operating on the assumption that I've ever had a hard drive for more than a year... And if I did, i didn't format it at least 3 times/year.
I kinda agree. It's my belief that no matter what happens, you always have to pay the bills. So, you can stick to a concrete principle(like all linux all the time) and do everything your way; or you can allow things into your life that aren't aligned with your moral compass.
Principles are all well and good, but buisness is buisness, and web hosting won't pay for itself. If someone is really smart enough to use Linux, they have probably already made a choice determining what they want as far as an OS, and no MS(or Linux) ad will change their mind, unless they want to change it.
I'll bet some of these people are taking lessons from the riceburner kids...Think how fast & furious it would be with a big muffler and aluminum spoiler.
Pardon me, as I'm sure I'll get modded as -1 Neo-Luddite, but I hate cellphones more than anything in the world. Although it is a bit of a contradiction that I carry one, it's only because I have to. I'm just sick of people spending more time choosing a different ringtone for every person they know than they do talking to those people.
I just think that that there's better things to do than think over new ways to be rude in public...like surfing the web on a 1x1 screen, taking lo-res pictures, or just trying to get attention
Switch to Yahoo! Mail.
Switch to pop3! Wait, is this not slashdot, where everybody has their own web/mail server in their kitchen? Why stick with the web crap, really?
Most everyone I talk to thinks that top 40 music on the radio sucks
I would concur. My experience has been the same, most people I know, and as I'm sure, most people say the same. So, we encounter a logical paradox...If most people that most of people know do not like popular music, then why is it a multi-billion dollar industry, and why do we have things like MTV and Avril Lavigne? I think the answer is that Slashdotters don't know enough sorority girls/frat guys/high school kids. Either way, it still sucks, and there's little to do about it, other than start an indie label(Not a bad plan, i think).
P.S. I'm sure that I'll be modded -1 Troll for not putting my If/Then statement in code, but I'll take the chance.
Before making a commitment to IT at school, I thought quite seriously about going to a music production school(I'm an amateur producer already). Besides the fact that it was too F'n expensive, I also decided that music is an art, and shouldn't be a buisness. Similarly, it goes against my philosophy that music, and all art, should be free; or in trade regulated by the artists themselves.
The thing is- Britney Spears, the boy bands, Creed, and anything you'll see on MTV, are not artists, they're buisnessmen(as if you didn't know). The music industry is slowly(quickly) diluting from pop music, and if you're anything like me, you don't have the capacity for it.
I don't think I'd find out until I went to Slashdot...God, i hope it makes the front page.

I can do it before the evening's done.
It's more than possible...I'll probably add a bigger fan, but the problem only occurs when I layer too many tracks together.

This would fall into the "News for Nerds" as opposed to the "Stuff that matters" category.
You know, you're on to something.
Q. What's nerdier than a bunch of nerds talking about talking with a bunch of nerds?
A. Nothing.
There's nothing wrong with you...You read slashdot, that's all. By the way, I think all of those are either in /dev or /etc.

So, we're counting Morgan Webb, right?

SO THERE!
Even though it's only 16 bit, I think(know) that Secret of Mana for the Super NES is perhaps the best game ever.

how did a person on a Segway out run the police?

Na we are just not interested in a "swarm" of three sattelites ;)
I dunno, is a "swarm" the same as a beowolf cluster?

Oh good, maybe this means my patent for oxygen will come in soon...WHAT?
What a pile of horseshit.

Free Hardware? OK, I'll take a 2.5 Ghz laptop, a dual 2.0 gig server box with 1.5 gigs of RAM.....

In the words of an X-man:
'Nuff said.
