Why overclock? Why not? That's my question? Pretty damn fast? for who? For a slashdotter who's programming in FORTRAN or for a gamer who needs more clocks?

With today's heatsinks, at most what you'd need is a $40-50 heatsink and your cpu can reach speeds of a processor that costs double or triple the one you have. Most video cards out there can overclock without any modifications to the cooling.

Overclocking is safe too, if you know what you're doing. If your PC starts displaying artifacts on the screen you know you've reached your limit without hurting your hardware. Oh I know, you'll tell me that your reducing the hardware's lifespan! Blablabla, how many of you honestly use the same processor after a few years? I know that as geeks, we have old hardware lying around that can be made into pr0n file servers, but most hardware can already last more than a decade.

Of course, it's never a guarantee in overclocking so don't be surprised if your hardware isn't reaching the speeds of someone else you know, but generally you can get extra boosts out of what you have with very little to add onto, at most a good cpu heatsink.

The worst is when in the early shows when there were no cops, the molester would leave and within 24 hours would try again and was caught again. I donno about you but I can't see how you can defend the man who wants sex with a kid versus the hidden cameramen spying and trying to catch these people.

  14. Re:Useless? stupid zealots on Dell Asking ATI For Better Linux Drivers · · Score: 1

Well, most people are putting up with a car with a locked hood seeing how Windows remains the dominating OS for the desktops at home and the workplace so how is that worse than having the same people put up with a car that has an open hood (Linux distro) with a locked compartment (video drivers)? Sounds already better doesn't it?

When the situation is that a game performs better on Linux than Windows using proprietary drivers from the same company and I'm talking about Nvidia, surely somewhere that company has done their homework at making their product work. If ATI/AMD can do the same, that would be a great leap.

I think the problem is because so many companies provide poor support to Linux, the community thinks contributors who are active in the OSS community are the ones who can improve anything but what if you have a company that has programers that know very well what they're doing, should there be a need to open up the drivers? Yeah for enthusiasts it's always good but for the end-users, not really because they have support for their product that they payed for and it works like it's suppose to.

Linux users have been spoiled that's all. It's two extremes, you have the fully customizable Linux and the very closed Windows. Once you get a taste of the openness of Linux, you think it's great and everything should be like that, but then you forget how some things work great on Windows despite being very locked in. It doesn't have to be one or the other. What's wrong with having an Open system like Linux with some closed parts as long as everything works?

You people are all crazy about GPL/Open Source. "VIVA OPEN SOURCE WE WANT SOURCE CODES!". Seriously, how many *nix users contribute to OSS projects? How many contribute code? I bet a good bunch of people contribute because I've seen projects that have died and have been picked up by other developers to keep some applications alive so I won't deny the existence of contributors.

What I will say is that I would honestly prefer closed source drivers like Nvidia but that work correctly and perform great rather than open source drivers with the current ppl @ ATI. Call me crazy but why does every company that develop on Linux have to give in to this OSS idealogy, the idea of giving to the community in order to keep it alive? Seriously the company that do so are great but the companies that don't want to, it's their choice it's their product and it's their software.

Does ATI need to improve their drivers? Hell yes. Is the solution to open source their drivers? Maybe, maybe not. Get a good team of linux developers to regularly work on them at ATI and if the drivers perform great, you will see many happy ATI users who will not need to buy a Nvidia video card to simply to stay on Linux. Sure there will be a few pissed off GPL/OSS/Linux/Penguin zealots who will cry for the source code, too bad for them I guess.

What I mean is, you don't have to be revolutionary to beat the competition. Just take what others are doing wrong, and do it right, or in a way that you think people will enjoy. The iPod wasn't/isn't successful because of marketing only. It does a great job at being an mp3 player and not a piece of shit that you battle with just to get it working.

What about the iPhone? It's the same concept if you ask me. There are pocket pc's and blackberries that have many features that the iPhone promiss to offer its customers and whatnot. The difference is more in the interface and how you'll use it rather than discovering new features.

I say this cause I see a lot of people commenting on the iphone and saying that "X" and "Y" devices do what the iphone does.

AFAIK, a Geo Metro and a Lexus IS350 can both go from point A to point B and reach the maximum allowed speed limits on (almost) any road you'll be travelling on. The difference is the experience you get out of driving those cars.

Right let's send an email to customers in Africa, the receipt for a purchase shall come in by Air-Camel straight from UK!

Yes, fake paypal emails do look very similar sometimes to the real thing, but if you fall for it, you deserve it. When I worked at a gas station, I was just surprised at the number of customers who would not read the simple instructions at the gas pump when they wanted to pay at the gaspump, and then when something wrong happened they'd come at me inside and bitch that the machine sucks. Well fuck them, I'd tell them "Just read the instructions. They don't sucks, See that man on #4, he did it... so you can too, no?". Even better, they'd come inside, pick a pack of gum and ask me what's the price when the price tag is right there where they picked the fucking gum.

Theres always a pattern to fake emails. You have to use "just a bit" of common sense. The very first emails ebay and paypal send you, just like any other company that operates online is that they will never ask for your information and with paypal you should always manually type the site when in doubt, x.com doesn't take long to type now does it?

PayPal is shit but the options are pretty limited so we have to make an extra effort as customers to avoid the most issues.
