  1. Filesharing illegally? on European Piracy Crackdowns · · Score: 1
'We would particularly advise parents to check what their children are doing on the internet and make sure that they are not breaking the law by filesharing illegally,' said Geoff Taylor, BPI General Counsel.
Did anyone else get the feeling that this guy is saying that filesharing is illegal? It would be different if he had said,
'We would particularly advise parents to check what their children are doing on the internet and make sure that they are not breaking the law by sharing copyrighted content illegally.'

  5. I just don't buy any music anymore on UK Record Industry Starts Suing Filesharers · · Score: 5, Insightful

I mean, really, I don't want to pay what I consider outrageous prices for crap. I'm not downloading anything either. If you want some good music, go down to your local coffee house and listen to a good live band and buy their CD if you like their music. For the price of a coffee, I can listen to a small live concert for several hours while I do homework. You mean you can try before you buy? Amazing! The CD's I get from the local artists (and other independent artists that come through my area on tour) are much cheaper than the record-label CD's and the quality of music is sooo worth it. While the ethics of downloading the label's music is disputed, one thing I think we can all agree on is that the labels would have no ammo if people would just boycott them instead of refusing to purchase their crap and downloading music. Boycotts do work. And boycotts 'steal' nothing from the artists.

My parents are the same way. For a while, they would ask me to clean off the spyware/malware from their computers, but they would never listen to any advice I gave them, as though it didn't apply to them.

So I decided to use tough love. I gave them a sheet of things 'to do' and 'not to do' and said that if they followed my guidelines, I would help them with their computer problems. They ignored my sheet for a while, but when I told them 'no. I gave you some guidelines to follow, and you ignored them. I will not help until you follow them'.

They now follow the guidelines I set out, and now I hardly ever have go over and fix it.

Use tough love. There are consequences for ignoring guidelines. Let them know that.

  23. Re:Well, not really... on White House Lied About Iraq Nuclear Programs · · Score: 1
Condoleeza Rice appeared on a lot of Sunday shows today (I saw the CNN one) claiming that back when she claimed that the tubes could "only really be used for nuclear weapons", she knew of the debate but thought it was a marginalized dissent and that the overwhelming consensus in the intelligence community was that these tubes were to be used for nukes.

She thought? Maybe I'm just being silly here, but if I thought that I was supposed to do my C++ homework in BASIC, everyone around me would just consider me incompetant. Since when can an important political figure just think something, be totally wrong, make an important world-involving decision, and NOT be considered incompetant?

  24. Re:Does it matter? on White House Lied About Iraq Nuclear Programs · · Score: 1
My grandmother is like this. She listens to Rush Limbaugh (sp?) religiously, and has tried to convince me on more than one occasion that Rush isn't Republican propaganda, and neither is Fox News; those sources are balanced, she says; everything else is liberal.

I talked to her about the Guantanimo prisoners one time, but her faith in Bush is so resolute, she is completely unwilling to consider the idea that at least one of the prisoners is innocent of the charges that are yet to be brought against him. In short, she says, if Bush says the prisoner is guilty, he is guilty. Extending the idea to me being thrown in Guantanimo, she says I wouldn't be because she knows I'm innocent.

How can I deal with this? I'm still dependent upon my parents for support, and I'm getting books in the mail from my grandmother about Liberal lies and treason and such.

When did it get to the point that people just started believing everything a party member said? Seriously, when?
