  1. no legal basis on Google Fined By French Privacy Regulator · · Score: 1

Isn't France that country where "everything is allowed, unless strictly forbidden?" I'm fine with the notion Google didn't notify people enough, but why is unifying their data between services inherently illegal?

I had the same thought! I'd mod you up but I can't. Instead, I'll just add that this seems to be a general trend. Developing for the end-user seems like a thing of the past. Instead it's what do the carriers want? What do the content producers want? What does the government want? At least they didn't create an NSA Advisory group (yet)?

I think there are two sets of numbers here. The spent $135M out of $208M for DMV upgrades before canceling. In another example, they spent $254M out of a $371M for payroll system upgrade before canceling it. Still, I'm not sure I would find it surprising to learn the government had spent more than the total after only completing half the work. :)

Still, monthly increments imply that the user will still be aware of the cost of the phone. Unlike the bulk of US operators where different phones are subsidized at different rates, with the user left with the impression that all phones cost either $0, $99, or $199. In this case, I expect the user will see:

    iPhone: $99 up front + $X/month for 24 months + Service Fee
iPhone: $600 up front + Service Fee
    Nexus4: $299 up front + service Fee

And yes, I think that will create a significant change in customer behavior. At least at T-mobile.

Is he publicly donating $750M while secretly siphoning off huge chunks of cash and putting it in his own pocket? Or do you just not like Bill Gates and therefore you wanted to point out that his foundation can't really compete with the budget of the U.S. Government?

You'd think they'd at least wait until some of this blows over, but I guess they really don't care or feel threatened.

Yeah.. because no one owns songs they bought more than 2 years ago. They just throw them away and buy new DRM free versions, right? I'd praise Apple for dropping DRM only if they allowed you to un-DRM the old tracks for free (or the price difference). All their old customers are still locked in... even if its only $20 worth of DRM'd music they own, that's still $20 they now have to spend to access content they already paid for on another player.

You can't control the what people do with open source releases.. that's just how it is. I can't decide which is more annoying, them delaying the gingerbread release to my Nexus One for months so the Nexus S could look extra shiny, or them delaying honeycomb source so the Xoom and other pending tablets look extra shiny. I'm losing faith in google here. I can't decide if they are just too afraid manufacturers will jump ship if they don't get easier sales channels or if they are taking Apples rants against android a little too close to heart.

I don't agree at all. I worked for Nokia for 10 years and worked with many Finns. I think the groups point is not "Finland is so great" but rather Nokia's distributed R&D efforts are horribly inefficient. Having experienced it from the inside, I can see their point. And they do have a very large talented asset base in Finland, so it makes sense to keep that as a focal point. That said, they have absolutely no hope of getting "top talent" to go work in Finland.

It wasn't the internet access that was suspicious, it was the access to your google accounts and your personal information. The app is relevant because it at least lets you identify absurd permission requirements. I've avoided installing some things because there is a clear mismatch between what it says it does and what it asks permission to do. But I do agree it's easy to make malicious apps that can justify their permission requests. If a wallpaper app claimed to make wallpapers using your contacts icons, it would obviously need access.
