agreed, these netbooks need to stay in the 9-11" range and stay under $300. otherwise, what's the point, I'd just buy a REAL notebook computer. Small. Light. something you toss in a backpack or keep in your car trunk. I don't want to worry about it. Also, why aren't we seeing USB 3.0 yet?
Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11n, >0.3mp cameras, more than 3 measly USB ports, 2GB RAM, SDHC & Memory Stick Pro slot (like Dell has), all mandatory. And I'm sick of the 600 resolution. 1024x768 should be minimum, but I'd like to see 1440x900 as the min.
So, I was ready and willing to sign up for this Linux fund, however, I can't find anywhere on their site or the usbank link anything that talks in detail as to how much (what percentage) from my purchases are donated. How is this all calculated. is it based upon the actual purchase amount? a flat donation per purchase? is it based upon late fees (which I never have)? Of the current projects, how is the money distributed? is it equal shares? a percentage?
I think they need to elaborate in much more detail.
Related, I see they have a handful of current projects. I think there needs to be more. How about these:
Compiz-Fusion
Gentoo
KDE
Gnome
Video camera driver development
and get rid of Wikipedia, that doesn't need our help.
ditch "blender" and add "Gimp"
"What makes this next -- erm popInTheMail-up? -- even more fun is that this is the twelfth time that Avesh Jain has received a "1 of null" DVD. Wonder if his bill will be $NULL... "
What an awesome but obscure reference... I wonder how many people really knew what you were talking about, or simply just read and dismissed it.

for those that want to "get it" too...
*sigh* I was just going to post the same thing./. has become boring. I've posted FOUR amazing stories over the year, and ALL have been rejected. I think I'll post them to digg instead.
A similar thing happened to me a few years ago. I had brought in my OWN Hard Drive after the company provided one died. This was a startup (that I founded as employee #2 out of 160!!), so I was more than willing to help the cause with a spare 20GB drive I had sitting around. (back then, that was the avg. size)
Well, flash forward 3.5 years and 9/11/01, and there are massive layoffs. I VOLUNTEERED for a layoff as it was a good way to leave gracefully with benefits, accelerated stock and a severance package (not to mention $500/week from unkle sam).
We were allowed to clean out our desks and stuff at our liesure. I just took back my HD as it had years of personal stuff on it and threw it in the box with the rest of my junk.
A week or so later I got a call from the President who asked where my computer's HD was. I explained that I took it. He asked if I could "return it". I said sure. I copied my personal stuff off, and formatted the drive (not even DOD, just regular M$ format). When I brought it in, I was shocked (and pissed off) to hear him ask if I had "taken any proprietary source code". I never even had access to that SourceSafe!! I assured him no, and why would I do that anyways even if I could? I had thousands of shares of stock. It's in my best interest for this company to succeed -- not to mention that *I* asked to leave. I had no hard feelings.
Long story short. The cunt-rag HR woman refused to give me my severence package, claiming that I stole code and formatted the drive to cover it up. I told her, she could very easily "unformat" the drive and see that I did no such thing.
A year later I had to sue them, and they settled out of court for my full severance.
I've completely had it with Hollywood. I haven't seen a truly geat, unique, innovative movie in ages. And every time I see they are remaking a great movie, I want to puke. It pisses me off to no end and I go out of my way to boycott. In fact, I don't know what is worse: a re-hashed tired plot, a "trendy" remake of a classic, or some insipid waste of film made for the lowest common denominator of intelligence (to use a term loosly).
The fact that those greedy fucks put commercials in front of a movie that I paid $10+ to see makes me even more angry.
How many times must I rent a DVD (I don't go to theatres because of the rant above) and be dissatisfied by a cheeze-ball "hollywood" ending.
Okay. I need to stop writing now. I'm getting frustrated and feeling a need to kill again...
I can't think of anywhere I would be that a friend would tell me to record a show and I couldn't jot it down on a scrap paper, napkin, back of my hand, put it in my PDA, or write it as a txt msg to myself from the same cell phone they're trying to charge me $5 to use.
TiVo WAS an amazing product at one time. Truly cutting edge and brilliant. Now it's just a sad, dying company grasping to try and retain some sort of market.
They should just open source the whole thing, and focus on making the hardware dirt cheap. Or maybe make a single PCI card with all the inputs/outputs and concentrate on selling that.
TiVo's days are surely numbered. I have my Series 1 that I've hacked and it still runs like a champ, but with things like Meedio, MythTV, Media Center, and the bazillion other PVRs coming down the way (often included IN a Television or Cable Box these days), I don't think they're innovating enough to keep up.
Wow. i was born and raised in rochester till 1996, then moved west. I never thought of Rochester as having taxis driving around like other cities. sure you can CALL one, but I don't think I've ever seen one just driving around looking for a fare. I guess my home-town is growing up... *sniffle*
Yes. The license does really suck for companies. Our company is stuck at 4.0.18 as well because after that point, they switched from GPL to their own license.

It's not very condusive to using mySQL on a sold appliance/product because mySQL wants > $600 per license!!!

Hurry up and save 0%. offer ends March 31st. LOL!
I was taking care of a sick friend, so I picked up a bunch of DVD's from the Blockbuster across the street from her. They guy told me it was cheaper to buy the movie pass for $16/month and rent unlimited movies two at a time. I figured, that would be a good deal. Then I went to use the pass at my local Blockbuster six miles away, and they infomed me that the pass is only good at the store I bought it from -- even though your card is good at any store in the country (my card is from CA and I live in WA now).
fsck them. no wonder everyone has switched to Netflix.
Amen brother. I've used Linux since slackware came on 14 floppies. My co-workers mock me now because I spend more time emerging (read: compiling) than I do using. They ask me why, and I reply that I am hopeful that eventually the programs will reach the level of the windowsXP counterparts. I'll use Linux for servers without hesitation, but as for switching over for my desktop -- I'm not quite that masochistic yet. At least there is dual-booting (and VMWARE!)
I had bad astygmatism. 20/400 or worse in both eyes. now i have 20/15 and 20/20 in left/right respectively.
I'm a total pussy and was terrified of the 'pain'. It's more surreal than anything, and actually some of it kind of tickled. i equate it to when a nice warm breeze catches the 'corner of your eye' and it feels good. it felt kinda like that. it's just so scary and you psyche yourself out. literally the only part that 'hurt' (to use the term losely) was pulling the tape off my face where it pulled my cheek hair!
the whole proceedure took like 20 minutes and you can see right afterwards. it's stellar.
i paid $1600 for it here in bellevue, washington. that included meds, visits, 1 year warranty, punctal plugs (get them!).
i also financed it so my payments are $40/month, 0% interest for 12 months, but i've been paying like $200 just to get it done with.

Someone should also be working on a way to share the VMs between these two programs, just like VMWare can load VirtualPC machine files.
Reminds me of the TV show "Max Headroom", where it was a crime to turn off a television, and everything in society was based upon TV and Ratings...
