It might be harder to write a virus for linux (arguably, i don't know) but it still has to be possible to check for no-pwd sudo or keylogging for su + password and stuff like that.
Even nothing prevents a spammy mailserver from running under a users account so at least it would work for a while
Also, phoning home and taking over the maching using known kernel bugs and stuff should work too as there are plenty of linux servers out there still running the stock kernel it came with.
not contradicting the problem (eg for the google search box in firefox i have no solution) but if you open a new tab (ctrl t) the url box is blank and you can paste by middle clicking.
Games can certainly be educational, I do not doubt that. But they have to be enjoyable to play them.
If they make some kind of quiz like game there is no way those kids are going to like it in any way. But imagine they make a warcraft where you have real characters from the battle of troje or the WW2 on real battlefields etc. You have a game kids will continue to play at home and hopefully learn something from
No matter what researchers find the best format, the best format for users is what they can doubleclick to play, use on their el-cheapo portable mp3 player or whatever music device they own.
This might be of interest to musicians but the proverbial "jane doe" will keep using mp3 for quite a while
Email needs to get a few new features like gpg or this to fight spam, viruses and spoofing pranks.
And it better be an open solution not a proprietary one.
The only way I can see something like this happening though is if a few major backers get behind the same thing and most mta's/clients (depending on what the agreed upon implementation is) start supporting it.
It's not so much the possibility of patents that's a threat. It's also the way they are issued.
If the european patent office seems more sane than the us (a little like the japanese seem to do) and not issue patents for obviously stupid stuff, the problem might not be that big
they are right on schedule
mirrors are available from the fedora site
now if everyone could wait 20min until I've finished downloading
(damn i was hoping to have it finished before/. or osnews posted it)
yea, i wished i could edit it right after i posted it and deleted that part, the main point was hoping that it could provide some insights on the workings and evolution
I really hope this provides us (web developers) with some insights on how google works and evolves so we can make sure good sites end up in the top results
I know GoogleGuy has been making some posts on webmasterworld and in the google newsgroups, but this is a more "official" source and I have allready added it to my feedreader since this afternoon (4 hours ago)
that's some pretty tough competition out there, but these are the 5 I pick
Bjarne Stroustrup
Linus Torvalds
Larry Ellison
Philip R. Zimmerman
James Clark
Fair enough, but the thing still is that if you can code the win32 api and have the app run everywhere, why would you code another api (except maybe java or in the future.NET/mono) and only target 1 platform
I (obviously, see nick) am pretty convinced that web applications have loads of advantages as deployment, manageability and what not, but for a CRM application I have serious reservations.
Applications that users interact with constantly need to be above all, responsive. An accountant wants to play piano on his numpad without waiting for the application.
When an administrative employee is holding the phone and looking something up, every delay is very very annoying
This is my opinion too.

no but with all their cash they could make it a hell of a lot easier
not to sound like a troll but i probably do: cron-apt beats windows update every way as you don't even have to click yes.
I know public repo's are harder with proprietary soft but they could do it for windows and office but windowsupdate doesn't even offer office updates
Shouldn't those be firewalled allready
why on earh whould so many people need to have any of those open to the net
I'm all in favor of temporarily ISP port blocking for dial up users, since they're not allowed to run servers anyway (not here at least)

Not true, I was wondering the same thing.
If this guy wouldn't ve posted it i would, now people start replying.
I am also using spamassassin and am quite happy with it. Is there any reason to switch and if so what?
If you look at their rules i am surprised they don't include "wash hands before and after games" anywhere.
With those sweaty hands and thumbs i'm sure it wouldn't hurt
another senator without a clue passing on a prefab amendment
lol
Maybe we should include footers in the line of "I allow any recipient of this email to forward it without my written conscent".
they cost more money than most vandals, it's best some of them get caught, and if they do, punish them well to set an example !
1) The virus uses native DLLs - it should've used .NET managed code to avoid common memory leaks and other mistakes
.NET framework is not yet fully supported on 64 bit.
Last thing i heard (though i'm not following the win 64 bit stuff very closely) is that the
Does that still stand?

I knew i read that somewhere, do you have a link for that, i couldn't find it.

I would if my ISP didn't have this messed up upload limit :(

Isn't trying to be compatible with MS what killed OS/2?
If people can code for windows and run elsewhere, why code for unix/linux natively?
