A friend of mine, an officer who is currently serving in the US army in Iraq, came with me to the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. His response to the whole event was "Hell, I don't need robots that can go 150 miles. I need robots that can go 100 yards." What he meant was that he wanted a robot capable of going a short distance that could detect/disable IUDs and mines. That's a pretty risky endeavour for a person to do.
I was actually wondering this myself. I read that Apple actually updated their firmware to allow WinXP to boot properly. Does this mean that it will be easier to boot linux as well?
Seriously, though, I have had some of these issues with my MBP, particularly the noise issue, which is fairly annoying. Can anyone verify that they have in fact taken their MBP to an Apple store and had it replaced?
By the way, it's true that if you get the static noise sound, you can open the 'Mirror' widget, then close it, and it *usually* won't return unless you reboot or use your camera. Still obnoxious, though. I took mine to an Apple store last month, and a 'Genius' there told me that the noise was within spec for an Apple laptop, and that he couldn't help me. I told him, well, I guess I'll just have to wait until enough people complain about it. I guess that time has come!
It is preposterous to claim that everything has been invented. And as an engineer, I find that slightly insulting. I personally think that robotics and nanotech are coming up pretty quick. Nanotech especially, given another 10-20 years, is going to be VERY big indeed, and if it lives up to what the researchers and dreamers today think it will, it will likely revolutionalize the way we live.
There was an interview with Jon Stewart and a producer of the Daily Show on Wired a while back, where Jon says that he's fine with people downloading the show. We can only hope that the bigshots at Comedy Central feel the same. Me, I would never buy cable, but I do love watching the Daily Show...
Here's a quote: Stewart: We're not going to shut it down - we don't even know what it is. I'm having enough trouble just getting porn.
A Boeing employee recently gave a presentation on the FCS for a class I'm in, and while I think it would be a swell idea give all of our units and soldiers access to all possible information on the battlefield, it seems that they are not going to stop there.
The guy said something to the effect of "once all the information is centralized, we'll be able to automate much of the decision making during a battle".
They are planning on putting a computer system in charge of our military! Not that I'm on the tin hat brigade, but that really frightens me. Imagine someone hacking into that system? And furthermore, who is to blame when the system orders an airstrike of an innocent village?
But seriously, some of those games are pretty lame. I mean, it was the novelty of the 3d raytraced graphics that made the Star Wars game interesting at all. The kids did like Zelda, which is still a great game.
Yeah, this gives me an idea for a new TV feature. Whenever you lose the remote control, it sends out a destress signal until a search team shows up to find it. Now that's service!
This raises some interesting points, but it is not phrased very clearly. The most interesting point is that marriage is a religious institution. The government endorsing marriage is a way of endorsing religious beliefs, and there are no legit non-religious reasons for preventing gay marriage.
What you want to do is get involved in a research project. Best case is to come up with your own project, something you're really interested in or find exciting to work with. The thing is, it's hard to get into worthwhile projects until you get into graduate school, but if you find worthwhile professor while you're an undergraduate, maybe they can help you.
My point is, research let's you think for yourself, and work towards new ideas that noone else has explored yet. It's far different from the same old drudgery they give you in classes.

Now if the car can make a 3-point turn, it could pass a driver's test.

As I read through the article, I tried to make myself believe that the game was actually going to come out soon. It made me feel kind of good.
The submission reads:
the multi-million dollar suit filed by relatives of the victims
I'm sure the relatives of the victims had nothing to do with this wacko, no?

In other news, I think oranges taste much better than apples.
Sounds like he is real. Unlike your "Christmas Lights".
Best quote, referring to 'Defender':
Bobby: "I've played this on my cell phone."

"...and many show the sense of humor of taxonomists." Yes, they sure do. Taxonomists are very well know for their lighting wit and pointed satire.
