That's something entirely different, that should be handled by a different tool. Access doesn't belong in an office suite. And MS Access can (I think) easily be converted to open formats.
That's a big bummer. Hmm. I wonder how that happens? It seems like it's kind of stupid for Microsoft to store edited/removed info in the document anyway. Perhaps this demonstrates the advantage of separating content and meta-data, or one bit of content from another ("layout content" versus "fill-in-content").
You're right, I don't do anything really heavy-duty with it, just school stuff.
But I've done "newspapers" with pull-out text boxes, columns, graphics, a header and footer all on one page; I've also done tables galore for science. The only difference for me has been adjusting the font to size nicely, which is something that can't really be blamed on OOo. If you need that, you need something more than OOo/Word, and even MS Word doesn't handle it that well between versions.
Do you have an example of an MS doc that OOo chokes on? I don't doubt they exist, I've just never had it happen, and I'd like to know what chokes it and how it reacts (junk in the display? crash? error message?).
I think taking his list and adding Gentoo and Slackware would do it. Gentoo for obvious reasons; Slackware 'cuz it's so well-built and "out of the box finished". Maybe take Mandrake off - when I tried it (around 9-ish - "dolphin") it was slow, and somewhat ugly.
So what would you recommend other than guns for personal protection? I have a physical disability that would prevent me from holding a gun steady, much less squeezing the trigger and dealing with recoil. Tasers have similar problems (they're heavy and they require more finger strength than I have, etc). That same disability makes me worry that I'm an easy target for a mugger.
I'm thinking one of those "screecher"-type panic buttons and some pepper spray (idea being, at least it works on *some* people), but is there anything more effective? I tend not to go out at night except in a group, but... it's always a concern.
Yeah, in South Africa, but not in the US. Remember that thing in the fact about why this is a US-centric site? At least add "in South Africa" to the end of that post.
Times looks fine on my FC2 box. Although it may have cannibalized it from the Word documents I open (are the TTF fonts packaged with the docs?). BV is my favorite, though.
Last time I was in a school lab, the babysitter (she doesn't know squat, so that's all she is, really) chastised me for changing the monitor to 75Hz (the max it would do). Apparently, it "uses less electricity" at lower Hz. Thank goodness it only goes as low as 60!
Wouldn't be a good thing. But it would be (cue Jack Aubrey) the lesser of two weevils. Which is worse giant forestfire / natural gas explosion / current theory that kills a few thousand, or a new nation in the nukes club? And a particularly unstable one at that.
So... unofficially "peer pressure" employees into potentially losing their money? Good call! (Yes, I do hate sports. And soccer is much better than football, but you won't find many of my fellow Americans admitting it.)
Alot of people dismissed the idea of Lan games and happy hours as exclusive to some, but teams are diverse, and no matter what you do, someone is not going to be interested. If they choose not to participate, then so be it.
Just don't choose something that is going to exclude someone - like beer & wine day. If you want everyone to go out for drinks, fine. But for those of us who don't drink for religious, personal, or medical reasons, don't deliberately build it around alcohol ("oh, you don't drink? sorry, not part of the team" is the message given if drinking a non-alcoholic bevarage isn't a possibility).
But never the whole thing. I don't crack easily, but I do occasionally crack; if I'm not extremely busy, I get bored and get slightly depressed.
Under stress, I am very productive until my breaking point. Once I hit my breaking point, I crack for a short period of time (a few hours to a day or two), then I'm only slightly less productive than I am at my peak. I actually do my best (and fastest) work when I'm just short of this point. Suprisingly, I'm also quite happy there, but once I go over the breaking point, even once I've pulled myself together, I'm miserable, and my productivity stays at that "slightly less than peak" level until I'm calm and relaxed (i.e., have had a decent amount of time to recover - usually a weekend; as much as a week if it was prolonged stress).
Really? I can install games from my 9x/Me/2000 box onto my XP box, and vice versa? What planet are you from?
"if you're using Linux, this is how you install software"
Look on the developer's website to make sure you have all the requirements, then download it and "tar zxf foo && cd foo && make && make install".
Why can't I get a Redhat RPM and install it on, let's say, a Slackware machine without any additional work?
Same reason I can't install all of my Win 9x/Me/2000 on XP (some stuff works; some doesn't), or my Mac stuff on my Win boxes.
Besides, Linux is different. Number one, there's one company doing Windows - there's tons doing Linux. Two, 99% of all Windows software is for-profit. Most Linux software isn't.
Finally, you're assuming I *care* if the rest of the world installs Linux.

Didn't you see last year's Discover article? Nothing sucks, it just blows.

In theory, it's a software issue. In practice, I haven't even been able to get my microphone working in Linux well enough to use Skype.
"Police have confirmed it is perfectly legal."

"We come in peace! (Shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill) We come in peace! (Shoot to kill, shoot to kill, men.)
We don't get a reciept 'cuz that would allow for someone to demand proof of who you voted for, allowing for intimidation and vote buying.
I'm going to join the police. I mean, the tasers were always cool, but ... lightsabers? Dude, sign me up!
Ah ... it's the same story I got from another news source (forget which). This isn't aimed at you, but ... a 4km/2.5mi cloud from a forest fire? PBNFL!
Doesn't "freudian slip" mean that you *did* mean it?

I get a "CNN: 404" on this. Has anyone else gotten it to work?
Yeah, you're right, that was Eolas.
And after the Thrawn Trilogy, maybe the Camaas duo? I do remember TIE ... damn that was a fun game.
I'd rather see Zahn's books as TV miniseries. The Thrawn trilogy, and the later duo about the Camaas debacle.
