  1. Ottawa Linux Symposium on Wrap-up On The Ottawa Linux Symposium · · Score: 5, Informative

It's too bad the symposium is so expensive; they have often had very interesting people and interesting seminars.

The funny part is half the people who do go are your average slashdot reader-types from outside Canada, so when the daily drinking begins, it only takes two hours for their frail geek-bodies to become overboard drunk! Luckily our Ottawa LUG practices year-round with a meet at the bar after each LUG meeting...

An honest question: Is X.org an "upgrade" from XFree86? Without discussing licensing differences - which gives better performance for 2D and 3D between the latest from each camp? Replies appreciated!

  5. M$ Theater Group Presents SCO on Groklaw Debunks SCO's ELF Heist · · Score: 1

I wish I could figure out who checks it to make absolutely sure there's no GPL code hidden in the closed source. (One might say there obviously isn't because it's so crappy, but the 'crappy' is a compilation of the insane windows API layer, the lunacy behind MFC programming, the overall bloated code you get from NOT having thousands of people refining it with you, etc...)

So how can we be so sure the GPL is being upheld and not mocked internally by the FUD spreading, theiving, convicted monopolists that are M$? (those were not allegations - they're facts)

  7. Fingerprints on Canada Moves to Biometric Passports · · Score: 1

Do all passports have fingerprints in them? I thought you didn't need to have your fingerprints taken until a) first criminal offense or b) working for a policing/intelligence agency.

Anyway, I doubt you'll be able to copy the data and use it without the actual passport/picture/fingerprints, so the electronic data itself would be a bit useless without the hardcopy.

  9. Re:Linux? on Time to Try a Linux Desktop? · · Score: 1

Actually, many games do run in linux. And all the ones that run in both run faster in linux (I've done my own proper tests, such as a timedemo in quake 3 for example).

Many apps from 1991 do NOT work in windows anymore (Syndicate Wars is a good example - and that was made for win95). I'd say, due to M$ refusing to support old OSs like 2000 anymore, that it is indeed time to try a linux desktop. I'm not sure why you say there's no standars - there are, you just get to choose from a few, like Qt or GTK stuff. If you haven't used linux in 6 months you can't rag on it. It evolves too fast for that.

Off-topic: Why do people rag on Michael Moore for lying? Shouldn't the effort of the message be applauded? Like Bush tells the truth the whole time??

I have to believe that the liability for software would not exceed it's purchase price unless there are punative damages, ... so I don't think Joe College-student who is giving away his Free and Open Source project for free would be affected.

I'd like to toss in (about your last paragraph) that I pretty much agree; Macs are beautiful. I find linux beautiful too if you're willing to learn the difference - and that's the key. Learning any new OS is just as hard. You should see my windows friend try to use a mac - or another friend try to use windows. Funny. I'm a linux guy, use windows the most, and think mac OS X is the prettiest. Linux just gives me faster games, more control/security/stability/customizability than windows, and is cheaper obviously than any other. But I only recommend it to like a quarter of the people I've met... I say macs for the rest.

The scripts were NOT there already - he wrote the first screenplay using a wookiee simply because he loved the character so much and he didn't know if he'd ever make the two sequels - the prequels, otoh, were so far from script they were barely even ideas. See the Lucas interview that comes with the re-released THX version of the real films (just prior to the insanely stupid/crapola trilogy with the added scenes.. of crap. What'd they call them again? Like Yoda would need a light saber - and if he did, like he wouldn't completely win? Isn't Palpatine about Yoda's level? So who's this Yoda-battle-worthy douche Dooku? Wasn't Douche-ku a pupil of Yoda's? So wouldn't Yoda just stop him dead with the wink of his eye?? On top of that, why did Yoda need his hands to steady that rock he STRUGGLED with? (And why'd he struggle? I thought "size mattered not - only different in your mind")

It's almost like Lucas set out to shatter our love of the real trilogy. Oh yeah - and R2 CAN NOT fly - if he could, why the hell didn't he just fly instead of falling in the swamp on Dagobah? Or when the ewoks got him? Or through the desert? Are You going to tell me his jets will be irrepairably damaged in this upcoming puke fest?

I used to believe it might not suck, back just before I saw Jar Jar and the Gun Guns scene the first time. Then reality set in and I admitted that Lucas has a problem.

Hey - if all the stormtroopers are clones of Boba/Jango Fett - why are the Fetts so good and stormtroopers are so comically pathetic?

  17. Not entirely different on Corporate Work in the US vs. Canada? · · Score: 1

Canadian corporate life is different, not in the business model sense but certainly in the stress-level sense. The overall feel here is to provide a quality service or product; not crush the competition by beating them to the punch with a shoddy product that happened to come out first (M$ take note). The philosophy here is more geared toward a "proof's in the pudding" mentality with regards to capitalism.
