baby steps will get us nowhere. I like the idea of individual organizations (non-gov) exploring space, which will only push the leading space explorers to work harder. What we *should* do is just go! I mean, 35 years later and we STILL can't claim more than just 'we put a man on the moon'. No colonies on the moon yet. No other planets explored (by man). Seems like a very slow-learning baby to me.
That would be kind of dumb to put a message in living cells. We've been around not nearly as long as other things like "Rocks". Life as we know it is very fragile and in my opinion not a good message carrier
Oh, but it is! Because if the message was simply to have different kinds of races, then nothing we have done so far has changed that.
I'm no DNA specialist, but i imagine there are certain dna strings in a human body that is equal for all humans (like all humans have 2 arms, 2 legs and a head). That string never changed, so the 'message' stays intact over the centuries. Very good carrier if you ask me.
forgot to mention that if this work is intensive, you are required to take a 10 minute break after 1 hour, or to do alternative work.
Also it's not allowed to work more than 6 hours a day with a computer. Hmm.. i wonder how my boss will react if i tell him that 2 hours before i stop working:)
Over here in Holland it's actually required for you to take a 10 minute break if you've been working with a pc (actually any type of computer that uses a monitor) for 2 hours.
Also back then the virii were more 'fun' to have. I still remember my mom, on a 8088 freaking out when a bouncing ball was on her screen, right in the middle of Word Perfect:) Or when my dad asked me to remove the music from his programs. Apparently every now and then he had to stop working, because the pc was playing yankee doodle:)
So true! I've even heard of people who used to play Quake/UT in wireframe, just so that they had the fastest fps;)
Personally i like all the special effects. It's what makes the game so cool. I tend to play such games much longer/more often when the effects are damn cool
Support. Not to say MS support is great, but it's there, it's guaranteed, and it's an insurance for a company that they won't end up with a product that they can't use. If you have a company, wouldn't you rather put your money in a product that has an official support channel rather than unofficial means of (trying to get) support?
Before i always thought DDoS attacks were initiated by frustrated scriptkiddies who had some form of dispute (probably glined off an irc server) with the victims. This is the first time people try to take money in the process. Is this a new form of terrorism? If so, will others (virii/worm coders etc.) pick up the trend?
"For those of you that have not yet pre-purchased your copy of DOOM 3 because you thought your system would not be up to par and are not planning a system upgrade, you can now rest easy. I can now say with confidence, if you are playing any of the newer 3D games that have come out this year, the odds are that your system will provide a great DOOM 3 gaming experience in terms of IQ and video performance."
I'd love it if people would comment on this. I got a Athlon XP 2400, 512MB and a GeForce2 MX440. Is this enough to play Doom3 or should i invest money in a videocard upgrade? I'm on a tight budget (anything over 100 euro is too much), so be honest:)
It's just too bad that if you're using your own mailserver, you might already be in a blacklisted (spam) ip block. Happened to me a couple of times now and my only option was to use my ISP's mailserver.
Competition is always good. It helps improvement on the existing software. Just look at what yahoo/hotmail did in response to gmail. Everyone tries to keep up with standards, improvements and in the end you, the end-user, have a broader choice of search engine.
But yeah, i'll stick with google too (for now). Having an extra app running in case i 'might' be interested in whatever is on my screen, is not for me. Imagine this thing running through a proxy server at work. Somebody wants to be funny and writes you an email with offensive/inappropriate words in it. Blinkx grabs those words and searches for them. All through the (probably) monitored proxy. Not cool.
It's definately a plus when an application works together with as many systems as possible. This way you're not restricted to using whatever standard package is available for your flavour of workgroup app.
But being on/. i don't think i need to remind you of cross-platform applications.. software... thingies:)
Actually, when i think about Novell, i think about Ximian (and especially Evolution) and how that piece of software can become much better/bigger/worth more. I'm looking forward to the 2.0 release, which features (from the site):
* integrated connectivity to Novell GroupWise * integrated connectivity to Microsoft Exchange * improved offline support for IMAP accounts * numerous calendar improvements, * support for S/MIME, enhanced contact management * Gaim instant messaging integration * Improved desktop integration
Especially the integration with MS Exchange is somewhat unique for a linux application. If Novell can provide a linux-based desktop that integrates perfectly with a MS Windows environment, then they are a step ahead of RH&Co and are close to becoming (at least my) Open Source Hero.
I image mister Gates sitting in his office, saying to an employee "Check this out. Every time i do a prediction, it hits Slashdot."
come on... Just because he is who he is, should it be mentioned every time the man predicts something? Why don't we wait till the frikkin book comes out?

Why does it run WinXP? Easy!

really? Last time i asked i ended up with no files in my homedir, my gf gone, house sold, parents divorced, cat died and i'm in jail.
unless it's on the forum only, which i can't check now because it's probably /.'d
and you would have known, had you read the:
System Requirements
In order to use Skype for Windows Beta software, your computer must meet the following minimum system requirements:
* PC running Windows 2000 or XP

before downloading. If you have, i don't understand your post. It would be the same like saying "Grrr. It doesn't support Amiga OS!"
from the site:
Latest version is:
Skype 0.98

Isn't a bug inside an open source program much easier (and no doubt faster) to find than one in a 'closed' source application?

most people ... except AJ Crowly

..was for 'weed'. When i saw the little rasta-like flags next to the results i thought M$ finally had made something cool.
:P
Oh and if you search for "/." (no quotes), the first result is www.netscape.com , followed by microsoft.com
