No. I have had two IBM Thinkpads and a Toshiba and one of the Thinkpads had to go back to IBM once because the case was cracked and the Toshiba had to go back to Toshiba because the battery wouldn't charge (the problem wasn't the battery). In both cases I only had to pay shipping which I believe was like $30.00 and in both cases I got the notebooks back in less than a month.

So I personally don't agree with what you said. My experience has been that both IBM and Toshiba were very good about honoring their warrantys in a timely manner. And both of them fixed the problems. Without the warrantys I never would have been able to fix the cracked Thinkpad, maybe put some epoxy on it but that would be ugly as hell. I also could not have fixed the Toshiba.

Yes but having owned many laptops I can tell you that one of the most important parts of your laptop is the warranty. When a workstation breaks it is faster and easier to fix yourself, when hardware on a laptop breaks it can be a nightmare.

Having this Linux laptop being supported by HP I might actually buy one. Buying a walmart laptop and throwing linux on it may be cheaper but I am sure that it voids the warranty and when the cheap ass thing breaks you are up shit creak.

I can understand many geeks alliegence to free software, Linux, etc. But I could never understand why so many geeks have such an allegience to Apple. If you think their products are cool then that is one thing but the company itself sucks.

No way. I can stay in my little studio apartment for days at a time only being forced to leave to go to work. If I could I would live in that apartment 24/7 like my cat does. Many geeks are like me and would make great astronauts for long voyages cooped up aboard a small spaceship.

Just give me a big collection of video games, books, software development tools, pr0n and have the space ship set up so that it recycles my piss into Code Red Mountain Dew and recycles my shit into Chilli Cheese Fritos and I'll be set for the long haul. When the ship finally gets to Europa I probably wouldn't want to get off!

I think that like every single linux distro that I have ever used came with XMMS. As far as SuSE is concerned, I have a SuSE 7.3 install DVD and it has XMMS on it and I am sure that every earlier version does as well. XMMS is probably one of the most common nonessential pieces of software included with most distros when you really think about it.

Because of my bad luck and the fact that my family was cursed some generations ago, I work as a windows sysadmin. Therefore the only usage that I get out of *BSD, Linux and Solaris is playing around with systems at home and with a couple of internal FTP servers running Redhat here at work. So I have never heard of this whole Xfree86 -Configure thing. Sounds pretty cool though. I am very surprised that nobody told me about that earlier when I was having so much trouble with X.

Does anyone else hate that phrase the terrorists. It sounds way to much like Joe Mcarthy talking about The Reds. I am not saying that there are not terrorists or that there weren't communists. I am just saying that constantly hearing "OOOoohhh the terrorists this the terrorists that" has gotten really old. Maybe people should start calling them "Al Qaeda sympathizers" or "Muslim Extremists" or anything else. Anything would be better than constantly hearing about the terrorists.

I overheard some fat suburban housewife in line at the grocery store talking about how she thought that the people living down the street from her were terrorists and the woman she was talking to said something about how the power in her neighborhood had gone out for a few hours the night before and how her and her hsband thought that it was the terrorists doing. There is this holdover from high school that many adults have where they think that if you are in public and someone pisses you off that you can just beat them up. Many times though this results in assault charges which will drastically change the course of your life for the worse.
