even if Sony bombs on the PS3, they're still in this market because they're so firmly embedded in many other electronics markets.

The problem is that Sony's home electronics divisions are losing money like mad. Those won't save them. What can keep them afloat even in the case of a total flop is their music and movie business.

  2. Re:Instance whoring at level 60 on WoW - The Game That Seized the Globe · · Score: 1

It seems to me that most games are more successful at using their limited repertoire of possible player actions to create puzzles or areas with different rules. E.g. SMB1 had those castles where you had to find the right path or get reset to the start and SMW had Ghost Houses and bosses that required pushing into the Lava despite Mario's ability to interact with enemies being limited to jumping on them or dying (or using a powerup). Granted, static puzzles won't do much in an MMORPG since everybody plays with a game guide anyway but you could add dynamically created puzzles that follow a certain ruleset.

Railroad Tycoon is an economy sim, not a train simulator. A train simulator is like a flight simulator, just with trains. I.e. you are the driver and can take the train along real routes. You don't worry about building routes or making a profit, you drive the train. Sounds boring and I suppose it really is but since the Microsoft Train Simulator is GAINING shelf space instead of losing it there has to be some pretty large demographic that enjoys it. Probably overlapping with the demographic for model trains.

Don't forget that these are ranked by units sold, not money earned. A 50$ game selling 200k copies is going to bring in more money than a 10$ game selling 500k copies yet would be much lower in rank. Most of the cheap crap in that list is also sold for cheap which means it must make up for its price in volume.

PC gaming has pretty much zero presence in Japan and as such including that market would be pointless. Europe is a different thing altogether, in some European markets PC games outsell console games regularly.

I don't like the idea of an automatic system, if you want the content on your site to cost money to see you're free to set up a payment system and maybe get together with others who want to sell their content like that to create a unified "premium content" network where the customer gives his billing information once and can easily pay for the sites he wants. If all content providers were to join such a system you'd effectively have an extra fee to use the internet but it'd really require the consent of the content providers rather than one group deciding "Oh, we'll take money from everyone and if you wanted your content to be paid for just ask us and sign this small contract here...".

Turns out the article says the ministry of education wants to allow schools to use all material available on the internet and be exempt from copyright that way. Guess someone didn't think about warez there.

The copyright group in question wants to offer content providers the option to use some kind of license for their stuff. Strikes me as idiotic since you can attach any license you like to your content without their help...

MMO money can be converted into real money by trading it for real money with other players. The game maker doesn't approve of that and says all money and items remain his property no matter whose inventory they're in. Money traders circumvent that by saying they're selling the service they're rendering by accruing all that virtual money. When seen that way the virtual money has no value but money sellers would have to report their activity to the IRS.
