    But we're talking about _sea ice_, not Greenland. Sea ice and freshwater ice are different animals when it comes to composition and behavior and general habitat for living creatures. The article is about pack ice.

    Polar bears use pack ice. You don't find them on Greenland's ice. Indeed, for polar bears to be able to eat, there _must_ be breaks in the sea ice for seals.

    Yes, the same seals that Paul McCartney was "Protecting" are eaten by Ursus Maritimus.

You have not been told if the elephant is female or not. You may or may not find testicles because you missed them or because the elephant doesn't have any.

    Now you're in your boat. You're looking for the Northwest Passage. You've got the same problem as above, but much, much colder and not quite as fun. Only since the development of such high tech as submarines that can go under the ice pack, and satellites that can fly over, that we could accurately map the ice pack.

    No, actually, we can't. You're thinking _ANTARCTIC_ ice layers, not Arctic. Arctic ice is _sea ice_ and as sea ice, it melts and refreezes and it _moves_ all over the damn place.

    Arctic sea ice oscillates twice a day.

    The rate is unprecedented, because _nobody has measured it before_. We've only been measuring since 1958. We don't know if this is a long term cycle or not. There's _not enough data_. Using your thought process, the "Little Ice Age" was "unprecedented"
      too, and were that happening today, you'd be screaming about how we're all going to die because we'll all freeze to death.

    I stand by my statements, as they're backed up by fact. Your post, however, certainly _is_ handwaving.

    2. There was technology throughout most of human history that recorded Arctic ice cover?
    3. Until aircraft, nuclear submarines, nuclear icebreakers, and satellites were invented, nobody was able to say with certainty whether the Northwest Passage existed or not, which was previously the domain of people like Henry Hudson. Indeed, until the technology existed, nobody could really map the icepack with any decent accuracy.

    Sweeping statements like the above are simply stupid, as there is no evidence either way. They do make for good inflammatory copy, though.

    Oh yeah, in geological terms, human history is less than the blink of an eye. With fossils unearthed recently showing _tropical_ weather in Northern Canada, I think it's safe to say that the Arctic ice cap is a temporary feature.

    It's amusing reading, but it's apropos to this.

    Whatever lawsuit that will be brought up will be dismissed on its face. No criminal laws were broken, and the words and pictures are those of their owners. Libel and slander depend upon falsehoods. Since there were no falsehoods, and the names were not "anonymized", then there is no tort, either.

    All the indignation will come to naught but indignation and RFJason will continue to laugh. Just because you're an idiot doesn't mean that you can get compensated for it. If you send naked pictures of your junk to random email addresses for anonymous sex, then you have more problems than other people exposing you.

    Seriously, KDE _owns_ Gnome in every way. It's more modular and more useful. It's easier for the user to tweak. It's faster. It would be helpful if the desktop authors simply wrote for KDE instead of having all this duplication of effort. Indeed, the basic reason for Gnome's existence disappeared when Trolltech dual licensed QT under the GPL and their own licenses. The only reason why Gnome is still around is spite fostered by the _KDEMustDie_ extremists who are never willing to ever forgive or forget that Trolltech offended their sensibilities.

    I could have posted this anonymously and I will be modded down for this by the GnomePolice, but I really don't give a damn.

    Climate change is not a myth. Anyone who has gone and looked at global average temperature over the past few million years knows that. Indeed, the fact is that change is the norm and we are at a low end on the chart of global average temperature. Global temperature _must_ go up if you look at historic trends. Only a lunatic would say that global average temperature should be static.

    Indeed, Earth has gone from Global Snowball to the current temperatures and a slight downturn can send us right back.

    The real kicker is that Humanity doesn't have to be there for that to happen.

    So if Climate Change doesn't require Humanity to happen, what _does_ it require?

    You say you're a science and tech nut, but you have never read about or researched as to why things are the way they are today? It's not about the engineering. We have the capability. It's all politics. Want to get a moon base? Campaign for one. Get people to call their congresscritters to fund one. The reason and motivation back in 1969 was the Soviets, and the fact that everyone here was scared to death that if the Soviets gained a foothold on the Moon that we'd lose it forever. Plus the fact that both the US and USSR were poised to nuke the ever-luvin' daylights out of each other. But since the Soviets abandoned the Moon as too expensive in money and lives, so did we after Apollo 17. While Nixon was on the telephone congratulating the astronauts, he was cutting their funding.

    Why, because you think that a few 2 inch Quad Ampex tapes were the be-all and end-all of the evidence that we went there? What about the _other_ missions? Eh? What about _all the other stuff_ besides these particular tapes? Until I read this story, I didn't even know these tapes existed, and they're merely higher definition archives of what was broadcast. Historically, they probably have no value in themselves as they wouldn't shed any real new light on the Apollo 11 mission, but they would be nice to have.

    With all the stories in the news about corporations and governments losing data to the four winds, you think that NASA misplacing Quad tapes is implausible?

    You're not a science and tech nut in the least, or you would already know all this.
