    give a DVD + a recorder to a tech person ... you will spend hours to figure aout how to write a DVD that is actually playable everyehere....

    now press the REC button on a VHS ..

    now give the DVD recorder to a non tech person ....
    come on my wife cannot record a CD, nor her parents !! with NERO, not with linux cdrecors +looong params

    i assume we are talking about Computer DVD recorders.... because the $100 range does not apply to press-a-button-and-record consumer devices .. as far as i know ...

    now about tape media : i love dat tapes for data ... could never afford a decent one ....

    vhs, and audio casettes ... vell i put them all in a bag 5+ years ago -had around 300 audio tapes- and gave it to a friend ...
    no matter if i used metal,chrome,normal and a quality tape deck ... that --shhhhh--- noise sooner or later appeared ...

    yes i know listen to mp3, and that is not perfect quality, but whatever i record stays like that.. if it is really precious, I just use the CD ...

    wish plastic did not degrade so fast ... LPs are king, no synthetic sound like CDs ... then you have the krr-krr-krr sound ....

    that is why people use VHS and other tapes, and that is why I do not ....

    my wife completely missed 4-5-6 .....
    so it was actually fun to watch the whole story one after each other.....

    also doing that, makes a lot different experience/perception of the last 3 episodes, that I saw 10+ times a piece

    personally I received more respect for being
    "a little more immersed in tech stuff than normal people" (?=geek)...

    I can enjoy geek stuff, spend days with a linux computer in a windowless room, or watch anime and "hight tech movies ( = eyecandy (e.g. matrix, starwars,GITS)" for 16 hours straight on a rainy day ...

    I am definetely not an OTAKU, but prefer
    "lone wolf" activities ... like offroad riding (you do not have to talk, just ride :)

    I can stay in my apt. for days, but have to go to the gym at least 3-4 times a week.. or do something that excercises, otherwise i get sick (seriously)

    the only teamplay i play is paintball ... though i tend to disappear in the forest and play sniper for hours :)

    anyway geek != otaku ....
    hmm... I always wanted to have a large dish with net and TV on top of a huge mountan FAAR from civilization ..... that is just plain outdorsy otaku ?

    maaan at least thos drives were kinda designed for the C64 ..

    I started on ZX spectrum, and for each 10 minute load, you needed to play with the head of every casette player to be able to read other's recordings ...

    at least the loader picture unfolded when the load was in progress :) .....

    C64 with a floppy :) hahha 2 side games ,,,

    also form data must be checked for where the post is coming from ....

    inventing a simple "dirty" image and a php script that puts 5 alphanumeric characters over it so when you register or post takes less than 1 hour for anyone who ever touched PHP .... 30 minus if you ever did anything with GD ...

    all these attacs can be successful because of poor programming of very simple tasks ... tasks that your average highschool kid can program after the first week of informatics classes ....

    Good points ... really, some 30+ games are on my shelf for simple mistakes like these ... probably will never touch them again ....

    I have a shelf for "finished" games ... and what really pisses me off, are the ones that are only missing the final boss ...

    Not mentioned, is the good tendency of being able to set difficulty during a game/campaign ...
    while does not sound fair for some games, it is really annoying to restart a whole game because you just cannot beat the one whatever monster on the 12th map .... (SW 3, doom 3, others have it on xbox)

    Super hard games: some hate, I really like the "post apocalyptic" view of terminator (the new game driving/shooting) however that was the most annoying "no save/reply it 100 times" annoyance I encountered in the last 3 years ....

    playstation especially japanese import games have a tendency to be super hard ....

    I agree, sometimes you only want to have 30 minutes of fun ... running around, complete one mission, "destroy/burn/shoot some stuff" ... very few games allow you that ....

    Our belowed monopoly net/phone/electricity provider gives us 5 to 30 minute breaks during tv watching, work and other activities regularly.

    Especially in the rainy season. I often bang my head into my office desk as electricity and net goes after the huge explosion-sound of a nearby thunderbolt hit ...

    i can have ups .... usually the net goes as these hits act as if someone triggered an EMP ....

    in the middle of an ssh session, just after saving a bad config, or messing up a production website's dbconnect include ....

    like 3 years ago, when we did not have electricity for more than 20 hours ....

    hahh ... i remember when the 3000VA UPSes died
    on our servers, leaving 10-12 production machines hanging between .. hmm ... our world and their world ...

    backup ? yeah right ... even some of the uplink providers ran outta UPS, and overnight their small generators ran out of fuel in the big overload ...

    and being new here we calculated (and tested that UPSes were enough for 12+ hours and that should be enough anywhere ...

    ps: now as the rainy season is on the doorstep i am thinking about getting a generator for even home ..... though I have to admin that i enjoy candle light dinners with my wife a lot .... ...of course cold food only :) no microwave, or heater :(

    I wonder what happens with shared ips, and when people start to shut ips out not knowing how many customers/visitors/mails they loose....

    Also if i have let's say 5 computers in my house, and my grandma's windows gets highjacked because she installed some "neat little thingie in the toolbar".
    Now if they kill the service and my 2 kids cannot do research on the net, and I cannot work without net, I would be super upset ...

    I think there should be procedures given to ISPs to do that ...

    eg: free scanning software, "sniffit type" pocket monitor, that would monitor well known (zombie) traffic..... and education of users....
    newsletters, warnings, rss feeds ... whatever ...

    Restricting ports, and services, and shutting down services is not the way to go ...

    on the other hand i am pissed of the zombie spam, and i would be extremely embarassed if any of my machines turned out to be sending crap all over.. (maybe that's why my windows box is behind 2 NATs ... one to analise traffic, one to protect the 2nd nat box :) ahm and that whole thing is behind a 3rd one that comes to my.... ....sad story: Being on a shared IP behind a crappy firewall and transparent proxy, I am in constant troubble using various (mostly mail, but everything from IM to p2p) services ...

    my public ip is listed in all possible ...SBL registries, and I am a well known zombie/spammer/open relay ...

    how great ..... because of spam and casinos you have problems with paypal and credit card processors ...

    I thought of putting china into a strict DENY, but I am sure there are legit users that would go to my sites ....... tehn it just appears to me how much of a pain of an ass Costa Rica could be for some with the casino spam, and credit card fraud that comes from here ....
    but not from me .....

    ps: because local porn regulations i cannot even confortably watch pr0n .... (prostitution is legal, watching tities online is censored - OK just some very few sites)

    That mouse (can we consider a trackball a mouse???)... anyway trackball just kicks butt ...

    A trackball is what most people fear/hate, but if you manage thru that 1-2 days (for me it was 2-3 hours) frustration and clumsiness, you are in business ....

    on the other hand i mostly type into a console
    and i mostly use the mouse on my windows screen (i am accessing it with x2vnc and that needs a mouse) that i use for browsing/testing..

    and what I would need on a mouse is more buttons, shortcut like programmable stuff .... like those good ol' gravis joysticks :)

    anyway ..... i am an oldschool guy, if i had one, i would use one of those HEAVY IBM keyboards, strictly 101, and undistructible :) i would probably get a 80hz text only serial console and use no mouse on that beauty of combo :)

    it can sit online somewhere and if someone with a HT machine needs it -> it is available ....

    i don't thenk anyone would refuse a patch that poses a security risk .... if the risk is soooooo smaaaaalll then no fix is needed, but it is appreciated ....

    well itt happened with OS/2 ...... then all the development went into windows and OS/2 got 0 priority and just died .... the devil killed my favourite os ....

    I also see ONLY Redhat getting special drivers for M$-messed up protocolls ... so MS can part the linux users

    I also see that i do not give a damn !
    because:

    1. there is more flavours of linux, and i will go with a no M$ infected one

    2. I hated redhat from the first moment for it's package management....

    3. I love, kiss, lick, eat debian

    4. If the linux mass get messed with I can still jump on an other unix flavour ((FREE)Bsd, or damn, even MAC/OSX is unix)

    ps: oooohhhh hope you don't see my browser version, because then you know i am typing that on a windoz box .... but i swear i accessed it thru x2vnc and it is only a secondary screen on a secondary box for testing software :) realllyyy..... :)

    Sorry to say and I agree I am a cubehead ....
    but I am sick of all these rounded down components ....

    I loved the playstation 2 because it somewhat fitted onto my dvd player and my amplifyer/tuner ....

    and then came the XBOX, with all that kinky shape... so it was impossible to stash an other component onti it (or dvd-s, controllers or whatever) ...

    and now that ......

    I am sorry, but I think these things (these are audio-video components at the end) are practical, when having a nice, simple box shape .... and fit your AV cabinet/rack ....

    I feel the same with computers, and never bought a rounded or non-flat-top computer case ......
    i like my zyxel cable modem because it is a box and fits into/onto whereever and provides a space to put an other on top, or an other device ....

    I see that consumers like all these design roun-shape crap, but if you are into something you will end-up a with a bunch of devices, and round things on top of each other just do not work ....

    LET'S KEEP thing that BELONG into the BOX in the BOX ....

    returning to PS3 : that controller looks interesting .....

    I would still put at least 2x3 shoulder buttons on a controller .... maybe even 4x2 why waste fingers ?

    i used to be responsible for a bunch of servers in Costa Rica and I liked the service Skytel Offered ....

    all i needed (and probably what you need) is to be able to be able to send a mail to a forwarder that puts the lines on your pager ...
    (eg sub:booboo happened on foo.bar.com, text: /dev/hda3 full )

    worked fine .... I hated that thing being full of messages when i went back to the car from my surfing sessions :)

    just be sure to enable it for countries you go (went to florida once with it, and asked the provider to enable it, and it just did not happen )

    also they have traffic, and other news services, but be careful, it annoyed the hell outta me ....

    they gave a tiny motorola pager that used 1 battery for 3 months ... so it is low maintenance .... my only problem was that i did not find a waterproof one as i am kinda outdorsy and happen to submerge myself into rivers and other stuff with full gear and bike :)

    so try skytel.com .... as my server numbers grew to 5 and my business depends on it i'm on the search too now and they are my first target i think ...

    hey it sucks to be the tech of your own business :) YOU have to fix stuff immediately, nut just tell, hey i'm on a holiday, or it's my day off :(
    and call the other tech :)

    that's what came into my mind -after imagining my never-ending laptop power, my always charged cellphone ... and my battery povered house .....

    then I started thinking: how many of these batteries do I have to pierce to suck out enough "radioactive gas" to do harm at a metro station .... an open area ... a park .....

    and how many security people started looking into that immediately to ban the whole thing before it sees sunlight .....

    I am not paranoid, but besides hoping for a new friendly lasting powersource.... thinking of carrying a "small nuclear reactor" of any kind in my pocket makes me kinda uncomfortable ....

    ahm and those idiots who just throw their batteries in tha garbage will dispose these nuclear ones safely .... RIGHT ...

    or are we going to be x-rayed, anal-probed, retina scanned and fingerprinted and profiled before we can buy a nuke battery ?

    I can replace my walkie-talkie, my ipod, my garmin GPS, my PDA ..... with a phone ....

    I like the idea, however :

    When I go to the gym or run, or bike .. i have to bothered by the phone + i have to power a phone instead of what i need: music player

    When I go play paintball, I will fall/step/shoot on/into an expensive phone except of the $25 motorola 2-way ..

    when I go offroading, I will strap (or ducttape) my expensive (non water-resistant) phone on my handlebar ... instead of using my etrex vista, that is designed for harsh conditions ...
    +of course my phone will ring, half the time, and half the time it will kill batteries as in the forest there is no reception....

    the pda is a cool idea in a phone, on the other hand the IPAQ is small enough to be a hated device to do anything an ordinary computer would do .... so I keep it ....

    multi devices are OK for the average JOE ... for me it is clean that I do not get ipaq qality music, Garmin quality GPS, ipaq quality PDA and walkie-talkie quality walkietalkie in a phone ...

    and yes, I spend hours and hours before i decide what is the most perfect device that I can still afford for a certain task ....

    but that is just my .02 cents

    while I hate all the review/price compare sites when i am looking for a driver, when I try to shop online nowadays I end up on yahoo...

    why?
    google is killing affiliate sites like crazy but sometimes (when eg I need a price compare or feature review) I end up shouting Yahoo .....

    well I guess it is good to have a selection .....

    back to the topic: pr0n is NOT permitted by adwords/adsense policies .... how lame :) I cannot buy/earn pay-per-click money from pr0n ....

    hunting, together with fishing and other killing activities - when not directly serving the survival of you, or your family should be banned alltogether ...

    yes some might think differently, but what kind of a sport is it to go with high-tech sniper rifles against innocent animals ????

    want a shooting sport? go play paintball or airsoft, there you can show if you can outrun a gun, hide and seek and play one-on one or be part of a commando ....

    i am facinated by killing tools, just from the tech standpoint... i am interested in guns and paintball/airsoft guns or bows or blowguns.... damn even knives or swords ...... but in no way i would consider shooting at living things (except people wearing protective gear a,d with paint) in case no one directly threatens my survival ....

    hunting is not a sport, it is a sick way of entertainment....

    internet hunting ? go play quake or doom or cs or halo or whatever you morons!

    after being carnivore for 18+ years i just started to be more self concious and realised that not eating other breathing-moving-living creatures is probably a better choice ... that might have happened back there ...

    I do not mean that that members of that early species society were reading articles about how being a veg is more environment friendly, but as we know(?) animals have a 6th sense ... they feel things with bad karma ... such as a gun, or place .... or just "feel" a bad person by instinct ...

    OK maybe not ..... but on the other hand why not ....

    maybe they just realised how easier it was to catch a plant rather than chasing the prey for hours ? :)

    my dogs are real killers... they catch birds, opossums, squirrels and lizards ........ but still, they discovered lemon-dulce (kinda of a cross betveen an orange and a lemon) and since then they are picking the oranges more than the squirrels from the tree ....

    I was a real carnivore (my favourite sandwich consisted 3 different meats and goose-lard with various cheeses).... and now i live on veg stuff probably for life .....
    i switched from one day to the other....

    disclaimer: this is not a "i turned veg yesterday so let's save the pigs" propaganda. i am in it for 15+ years now ..

    use a proxy when msnbot comes ...

    and you still comply with "show same content to bots and humans"

    on the other hand: i do not use msn, beacuse others show better results usually ...... but if your ranking is your business, you need to rank in MSN;
    just think of grandma who never heard of google and just types stuff in IE ... all that goes to MSN !

    Kinda thought the same, but imagine a system, that would process your .config and only downloads the SOURCES you need...

    of course kernel mirrors have uncapped BW and sometimes _NOT_ uncapped processing power
    (eg "let's give that OLD machine for the linux guys so they can mirror some crap over here")

    so they might choose NOT to process everyones .config and NOT to targz tarbz it 1billion times a minute when a new kernel comes out ....

    but it would be a neat tool though :)

    well while I agree on that, I would be happy to have a modular download option to the kernel...

    grr let me rephrase : an option to download only stuff i need, eg i could only get the sources that i actually selec in the kernel config gconfig,menuconfig,config, whatever feels good ..

    on the other hand if you cannot download 40 megs buy a distribution on cd/dvd or use windoze

    I am happy with the kernel, and however is monkey enough to compile everything IN and than complain about it being big well uhm .... maybe just use a precompiled modular with autoload modules

    i love the kernel supporting more and more of the junk i can stuff into my machine to enhance my gamin...video... I mean work and productivity ...

    i personally CARE for the dualshock, i even play some titles on xbox with my playstation controller ..

    while the xbox has a good idea of having a long travel analog button at the pointing fingers, it makes the hube mistake of wasting 2 fingers just hanging below ....

    sony has all buttons on the controller 8bit sensitive (256 levels of sensitivity) while as far as i know the S-type does not ...

    also having the 2 joys in an asimmetryc manner is a baad-baad idea, however you can get used to it ...

    the dual shock is also half the weight (i go to the gym, so don't start with i'm not strong enough to hold that S-brick stuff)

    i think something like the dual controller, with S-style pull triggers. +6 other buttons for the 2x3 fingers would give a big kick to fighting games ... hey if i could have a few buttons for the legs (2 pedals + some other stuff)

    or do i wish i was an octopus ?

    well a bit off topic ....
    i am upset, i have my duals, and probaly here in costa rica i will be able to buy them for some time .. but to be safe i might just buy an extra one :)

    and again, why to patent a HID (human interface device) ... these should be "open source" things that should be used and improved by anyone .....
    shame on that law system again

    great, have a unit with dead pixels and thye don't want to replace it ...

    1. break a button
    2. connect a battery backwards, or just put the unit in a hot environment until it melts away ...

    of course with a bit of care that does not show that it happened on purpose ....

    or figure your own distruction method and than instead of replacing an lcd they have to replace a whole unit ...

    i think dead pixels are unacceptable, if i buy a camera, a camcorder, a monitor, i insist on having a look at a red-green-blue surface (or background in case of a monitor) before willing to slap cash or card on the table .....

    what the fsck does sony think?! well or maybe i am the only person who can be driven crazy over a 1mm scratch on a monitor or one single dead pixel on a 32' plazma screen ?
