Funny that this about cellphones and not about the difference between people walking in pairs and people walking alone. That is much more interesting then the fact that people are bad in doing two things at the same time. Why is it more interesting? Because it is counter intuitive. You would think that talking to somebody would be distracting (just like talking on the phone would be) yet it isn't.
If walking alone is the median to start from and placed at 100%, talking on the phone is 50% (as might be expected, as it is a distraction) and walking in pairs is 150% (wich is odd) As the walking in pairs is the odd one out, that is what the students and professors should be focusing on.
What could be looked at then is gender specific coupling. Next what happens if there are three or more people? Does it go down? Also perhaps the increase is just that when together somebody is more likely to say: "Look at that clown on a unicycle." Then you can start looking if they are aware that the other said so, or if they thought it was their own observation.
And then the question. What if the same question was asked and there was NO clown on a unicycle? What would the results be then? Perhaps people together are more likely to say yes, because they would be afraid to admit they didn't and people on the phone are more prone to be honest as they are aware they are distracted and therefore even more alert. What about the single ones then? Well, they still might be not willing to admit not paying attention, but less so then with a friend.
So drop the phone part and concentrate on the other side of the results.
As a kid I played killing people. It was either cowboys and indians or police and robbers. But now apparently kids need to be cocooned till they are 18 and then must know everything at once. No time to learn what is right and wrong.

There are months that I have 500GB of traffic. At 1EUR per GB that will cost you some 475EUR. OK, most moths I have something around 200GB. Still a lot of money you are willing to pay for me. Now if you would have unlimited as well, I most likely would sometimes will cause a slowdown of your network.
Sure, you can then start limiting how much I could use.
And that neighbor you are willing to help? I had that happen as well. Guy came up to me and asked me if he could get access. No problems there.
I would like criminals to be arrested as well. I do however favor my privacy and that of others more. That does not mean you should bnever give any information you have to the police. It means that if the police wants data from a company like an ISP or even a grocery to see who was on camera or a credit card company to see where a card was use, you use a process that is solid and can hold up in court.
So use a court order. With the court order go to the company. And I mean a court order upfront, not something you can ok afterwards.
The result should be the following. 1) The privacy of not-related people is guaranteed. 2) There should be a paper trail for those whose privacy was violated 3) The company is covered as it is something official and no privacy is broken and they can keep saying that privacy is important to them, even if they are just following the law. 4) The law get the data and as it was done in an official way can hold up in court 5) The criminal gets caught
And in that order. But apparently getting points for putting as much people behind bars is more important to the American public then their privacy. And the "Guilty untill proven innocent" is only good if talking about yourself, but not when talking about others.
To me giving out privacy related data is worse then whatever a person did. You know with all the 'innocent until proven guilty' stuff. Get a court order and I will happily give out any data that is written in the court order. If not, you are out of luck with me. And yes, I have been in positions where I had data that could lead to the arrest of a possible criminal. Get back with a court order! Oh, the court does not want to give that order? Then you don't need the data.

Not only would it be possible to get the case thrown out, it would also be possible to sue the company for giving out personal information. There is a reason for this and even now it happens that in individual cases police abuse the knowledge they have for personal gain.
The positive part is that it should be clear to everybody involved what you can give out when and when you can't. "If you can't produce the correct papers, I can't give you anything. Now go away and leave the building." and yes, I have seen policemen escorted out of the building because they did not have the correct papers with them and if they would have stayed, we would have filed for trespassing and breaking and entering and what not.
They came back two hours later with the correct papers and got all the cooperation they needed. From that day on they came with a court order each time and each time got what they asked for in the warrent (nothing more and nothing less).
You must first ask what gives you the right to do that? What if the maker does not do it because of profit? Also to many asumptions and things where it will go wrong. Just put a reasonable time on it and then the copyright is gone. The whole issue is that we can not seem to agree what a reasonable time is?

I am a person who only wants phone and sms. Those I mostly use to make an apointment with people so we see each other in person soewhere. I do not want a computer with me all the time. I detest blackberry people who are online all the time. If iother people are more interesting then I am, please go to them. Do not come to me and then chat with them.
I rather plan my day around what I need to do. Not sitting at a PC and having actual contact with real people is very intersting. It is like live chat, but you can actually hear, see and feel the person.
I have also a phone with camera and the things I realy am happy about of having a camera with me are absolutely 0. The only thing I do is take stupid pictures and send that to people with the comment "You had to be there." Apparently I am not the only one, because all the pictures I see are of the same sort where "I had to be there" to think they are somewhat interesting.
In the past when you still needed to buy a film and let it develop, the pictures I took were still of the same. Some people sitting somewhere being together. This has not changed. The difference is that now I get pictures from everywhere that say "look, a picture where we are together."
In the past is was boring to watch somebodies diashow. Well, it still is and not everyuthing that is unexpected needs to be filmed.
Obviously you can prove me wrong by showing me all these interesting pictures. Untill then I bet they are not intersting and most likely not amusing.
