You misspoke. I'm a conservative. I'm against all forms of welfare for all people, except as a last-ditch safety net (i.e. you lose your job; you get unemployment funds).
You know a lot of the problems with our internet would be solved simply by revoking ALL monopolies that Comcast, Cox, Time-warner, et cetera hold over local neighborhoods. If you allow competition, then the People will be empowered to avoid the shitty companies and chose alternatives (like Apple TV or Linux ISP). We don't need a top-down approach. We need a bottom-up approach where we free the locals from the shackles that currently chain them to Comcast (Cox, TW, etc).
Who exactly would fund these competitors? Laying all that fiber or cable isn't cheap. The telco's and cable companies were given these monopolies in the first place as incentive to put up such a huge expense that they were not willing to do based on market factors alone.
Taking away the monopolies would in theory allow for completion, but would not address the expense of laying new cable or fiber, which is a huge hurdle.
Amen. First step is for the poor guy to stop calling himself a geek and seeing it as some sort of badge of identity.
I couldn't disagree more. I met my now exwife pretending to be something I wasn't. Obviously it didn't work out too well. I resolved that I would never be ashamed of labeling myself a Geek again. Yes I play MMORPG's. I am part of a shadowrun game every Thursday, I have 3 computers and a networked sun server. I get more excited by the latest cell phone then any teen girl every has over the newest boy band.
Now that I have accepted being a geek I think my confidence in my choice has led me to do things I never would have when I was too shy and thought "geek" was a bad thing. I met my girlfriend online in Everquest 2, and it is now the best relationship of my life!

Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but the first 45min of the movie were downright awful. Even low end camcorders have some kind of picture stability on them! My head still hurts from the shaking camera! The camera even shook in what should have been standing still shots!!! The acting left much to be desired, and (at least the opening) story was crap. I did stay long enough to see the monster, and this may be the only redeeming quality of the movie. The special effects were good for their budget. Overall though, it was a case of over hype, and major let down.
Would it really be so bad to have the government run with a more business like model? The current administration has blown away all hope of a balanced budget, would it be so bad if the government actually made a profit?
Put aside the perceived greed that drives M$ and you see that Bill Gates is actually quite a philanthropist.Would it really be so bad to have the government run with a more business like model?
On the flip side though, it may spell doom for small businesses trying to find a fair playing field against the giant almost monopolistic corporations out there.
(Wow this is one I realy wished I had hit preview fist on!! Copy / Paste gone wild!)

However its likely that if spamhaus's claim that they do hold back 90% of the spam on the internet is true... even services that do not use spamhous would be indirectly effected.
There are so many phishing attacks and so many people dumb enough to click them, that an increase in their spam would almost certainly mean an increase in my spam.
Notice that the Judge did not overturn the $11.7 million default judgment, only the attempt to suspend the domain name. While this is a victory in that we won't suddenly get hit with 10x more spam tomarrow... Spamhaus is not off the hook yet. This is likely to be just the start of some potentialy very good, or very bad legislation.
Flame the parrent all you want on this guys, but as horrible as he sounds he is right on many things.
My father in law finaly quit his job as a welfare officer for just these reasons.
He drove a 10 year old ford that wouldn't start half the time.
His clients drove brand new BMW's.
He shopped at salvation army.
His clients all wore the latest designer clothes.
He graduated college with a major in English Lit. and spoke 7 different languages.
His clients dropped out of highschool and couldn't speak english.
He went to work every day and worked all the overtime he could to pay for a house, food for his kids, college for his son, and stay one step ahead of a 2nd bankruptcy.
His clients had gold chains and other jewlery and knew that their kids would be able to mooch off the system same as they did.
Insult the parrent all you want, but the fact is as ugly a human being he makes himself out to be, he is right.
There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of real world places and activities (not that slashdot readers or WoW players would know about real world) to find community experience, and develop relationships through a common interest.... fer christsakes, that is what the world did BEFORE the Internet....
While this is true I think the point is that a video game is changing peoples minds about what defines community and friendships. Does a community need to physically exist to be real? Its something that gamers have known for years. MUD's Chat rooms, forums, and MMO's have shown their members and players for years that it can be a real community. Its just now that a game has hit the player base that WoW has to get the attention of more than just the players and concerned parents.
I am one of 3 leaders for my guild in Everquest 2. (MMORPG similar to wow, but with a smaller but older, age wise, player base) Every day I find that playing EQ2 with my guild is just as rewarding as anything else in my life. The frienships I have made in game are just as important to me as the friendships I have in my "real" life. When a member of my guild experienced a death in her family we were all there to talk to her and be as supportive as any "real life" friend. 2 hours after the birth of my daughter nearly everyone I knew (and many I didn't!) were sending me congratulations emails, private messages and making forum posts. There is just as much a sence of belonging and family with my friends in game as in "real life."
Advancements in technology only make the community stronger. My guild pays for a 50 man teamspeak server where you can always find people logged in and chatting while they play. Several friens not in my guild have created their own privately hosted forums entitled "B@W" or Bored at Work so that we can chat even when not in game.
Anything you can do in "real life" you can do in game just as well or better. In game you have the chance to be whoever you dream you can be. A lowly Sun Techie like myself can be a leader of the strongest guild on the server, respected and looked up to by a growing, changing, and fantastic community.
I was literaly addicted to Everquest for 3 years. In highschool wasn't much of a problem I was (am) very smart and never needed to study much to pass. I played every day from when I got home at 3:05 till midnight. I played literaly ALL day saterdays and sundays. I once went on a 28 hour raid. On my main character alone (I had 3 total)I loged over 368 _DAYS_ of online time. In college I got bored of the game and quit, there were much more interesting things to do.
This is something I've never understood. I've heard many people refer to their need to play games as a means to release from life, but I've never experienced this. I seriously do not think people play games to escape the hardships of life.
I can give a wonderfull example to help you understand how/why this can be a relief from real life. This past spring I was laid off from my job when the company merged. I tried my best for 3 weeks to get another job but even with a CS major and a Math minor there was just nothing for me. I felt worthless, I couldn't provide for myself and my fiencee who I was living with at the time. However in Everquest I played a very powerfull character who was much needed on raids. My guild relied on me to the point of not being able to take on some raids without me (thus is the nature of teamwork oriented environments.) In one world I couldn't even pay my living expenses, in the other I was needed. Thats some powerfull psychological stuff there. I easily sunk back into my old habbits. Who would want to worry about the next bill that you don't have the money to pay when its easier to log online and take on the role of someone who is respected, and needed?
I have since found a job and once again have my playing under controll.
GATES: Well, there's competition in every place that we're in. The browser space that we are in we have about 90 percent. Sure Firefox has come along and the press love the idea of that. Our commitment is to keep our browser that competes with Firefox to be the best browser -- best in security, best in features. In fact, we just announced that we'll have a new version of the browser so we're innovating very rapidly there and it's our commitment to have the best.
I'm not sure what to say, or where to begin. I think it speaks for itself!!!!
Its not only hackers taking advantage of DRM vulnerabilities. This article at virus.org reports that the RIAA is also exploiting DRM!
"The contractor Overpeer who works solely for the MPAA and RIAA to polute Peer-to-Peer networks with corrupt and useless files has moved to a new low by using a loop hole within Windows Media DRM to launch popup adds and infect users PCs with Spyware, Viruses and Adware.
In what could be considered a quite blatent breach of computer crime laws the world over, Overpeer a company owned by Loudeye is making a lot of money seeding Peer-to-Peer networks with thousands of fake files. It's one of the entertainment industry's favourite, and most obnoxious, anti-p2p contractors.
The loophole in the Windows Media DRM process allows companies to create media files and link them to adware. When you normally download a protected Windows Media file, you also receive a license that lets you play it. If however Windows Media Player cannot find a valid license on your PC, it checks in with a remote system running Microsoft's Windows Media DRM Server.
You should rarely see that happen. Some files, however are set up to ask you for information before playing. They do this by displaying a URL in a dialog box labeled License Acquisition. Normally that dialog box is used to check for a user name or offer a chance to purchase the file that's being played. In a legitimate DRM-encrypted file the author may let you play it a few times, then bring up a window asking if you want to buy it.
Since the license dialog box is in essense an Internet Explorer window, it will display whatever is on the page it points to, in the cases that have been seen of this these trojaned Windows Media files, they all point to servers that load up unwanted ads, including windows that attempt install adware onto your PC surreptitiously, including adding items to your browser's Favorites list, attempting to change your home page and installing viral adware such as the 180search Assistant. "
Acording to the above article's date (December 31, 2004) Is it possible the RIAA inspired the hacker comunity?
I expierenced a similar problem. I was at a good school (RIT) and didn't like it. My chem class was larger than my whole highschool! I transfered to a smaller college (university of pittsburg branch campus) and did much better.
When I was trying to decide what to do everyone told me that the "better" college would only help with my first job and after that its all about what you have done, what you know and what you have expierence in. The fact that you have a degree is good enough that they mostly don't care where its from.
Now I have a great job at a leading risk management company working in the malicious code department. Its not at all what I envisioned for myself heading into college but I LOVE it all the same. I only just graduated last year so I can't tell you if the expierence bit is true or not, but I can tell you that where I got my degree didn't even come up in my interview. They mostly just wanted to know what I knew, what courses I had taken, and how well I worked under pressure (viruses make for rather short deadlines sometimes)
He isn't ready for presidency or other major office yet, but as others have said already... watch he is coming up in the world. A few more well chosen legal battles and victories and he will have a name for himself. The "cleaning house" stance will attract a huge following from all parties and he will be ready to run for minor offices. Its all part of the process.
Before you start screaming bias look at what got marked troll or flamebait. Comments riddled with obcenities or accusing a political party of being accused of being "stupid and lazy" or of wanting "felons and illegal immigrants to be able to vote -- not to mention dead people." do not deserve insightfull or informative ratings.
If this is what opponents of such a decision think then they deserve to be modded flamebait and troll. However if you would like to put forward a genuine opinion with substance other than small minded accusations and rampent explitives I will be happy to read it and conseder your side of the issue.
Am I going to need to crary jet fuel around with me
Will my PDA now have a fuel guage on it? How will this affect gas prices? Can I use regular or will i need the 92 octaine? Will I need a yearly emissions test?
Do you have sources? (Non sarcastic) I'd be very interested in seeing data on your burying paper vs recycling it to trap carbon underground.
fortunately, the 'corporates and uber-rich' are the ones who sign paychecks, so what's good for them winds up being good for SHAREHOLDERS too.
Fixed that for you.
