I don't have mod points, but if I did I would mod this up.
Many posts here are assuming "marriage"=="merger" or an outright purchase, which doesn't make alot of sense from either company's perspective.
But, some kind of partnership does make sense.
They are already working closely together on the PPC, What about some other possibilities:
IBM-branded iMac, similar to the HP-branded iPod
License OS X for iSeries/pSeries/whatever (Power5 systems)
AIX on Xserves (snickers)
Apple-branded full bigass Power5 servers
Compatible PPC970 blade products
Cell PPC-based Powermacs
The article doesn't say anthing about this, but
actually this is a rumor. See posts from Morpheus on this site, he has been very reliable in the past.
Here's an idea, what about an IBM-branded iMac or PowerMac G5, similar to the HP-branded iPod? That could make it easier for macs to get accepted into the corporate market?
Not sure if CS would be similar, but from an EE perspective,
It doesn't seem to matter. It mostly depends on your experience, how you conduct yourself in the interview,
and the hiring manager's prefrences.
Personally, I got my ECE degree from a large state university that usually has been ranked around 25th for engineering in that USNews survey, for whatever that's worth.
Also, my grades were nowhere near spectacular, but through some good experience in IT support and a good interview, I got a job at a large, very successful corporation and in the last 4 years have had the chance to work on several high-profile, fantastically interesting projects, one involving a certain groundbreaking upcoming microprocessor and a very highly ranked supercomputer . .
I think to succeed, you mainly have to prove to hiring managers that you are genuinely interested in the work and that you want it more than other candidates.
Where are you seeing 10% ??
Poll averages had Kerry only up by 1% in NH. I don't see anything even close to 10% there. And Bush was even up by one point in one poll.
Poll averages also had Bush up in FL, OH, WI, IA . .
And I'm tired of saying this, but here goes again:
midday exit polling is NOT scientific. So it is notoriously unreliable.
I guess I wouldn't mind a recount, maybe it will put these silly conspiracy theories to rest finally.
I have to swim through a bunch of paranoid rambling about it on slashdot.
Seriously though, I'm scared of the Patriot act, and I think it needs revision at least, but most of the bitching I hear about it is probably crap.
I *am* very worried about how a hillary '08 administration would use this broad, overreaching power though . . .
If you buy the argument that it will be easier to port from Xbox2 if it's PowerPC based,
Then you can say the same about PS3 games, and Gamecube as well.
PowerPC dominates the next-gen game console field.
As for games I'd like to see ported to OSX, that's easy.
GTA III.
For what its worth, Slate suggests the civilian death toll is closer to 8 thousand.
And here's some left leaning blogs that seem to agree:
Marc Cooper and Matthew Yglesias
Honestly, that is a huge variation in numbers, and I'm not sure who to believe.
But I suspect it will be difficult to argue that Iraqi civilians were less likely to die in the long term under Sadaam. So, if you choose that route, good luck to you.
Slate, not exactly a publication known for supporting the war in Iraq, suggests this number is probably closer to 8 thousand.
And these two: Marc Cooper and Matthew Yglesias, anti-war types from the left, seem to agree.
This neglects two important concepts -- intent, and success at attaining a goal.
1. OBL admits to *purposefully* targeting innocent civilians. We don't do that.
2. Don't you think OBL would have killed more civilians if he had the chance? Do you get the feeling he was holding back somehow? Considering his goal of removing the US as a superpower and removing our influence from their life, he has failed miserably.
Now consider our actions in Iraq. I could argue that we are trying to accomplish a FAR more difficult task, and we are much closer to our goal the he is to his.
And I'm not sure where you got the 15k figure, I've usually seen much smaller numbers.
I suspect you might be including foriegn fighters, Insurgents, terrorists -- yaknow, people without a uniform, but they happened to be shooting at our troops.
Did Bush personally sign the order for the 1993 WTC attacks also? Yaknow, when Clinton was in Office?
Or was he in on it too?
The paranoia is astounding . . .
Google Occam's razor.
Bush isn't purposefully killing civilians as his stated goal.
And Bush didn't kill 1000 servicemen-- Iraqi insurgents, foreign fighters, and Sadaam did. Also some friendly fire (Read: accidents) was to blame. And I won't even get into how lack of public support for the troops affected things.
And do you honestly think all of those 100k civilians were innocent Iraqi bystanders? Don't you think its possible that some, possibly even MOST of them were less than friendly combatants? It's difficult to distuiguish who's who without dog tags, uniforms, etc.
If you want to have a discussion on whether it was a bad idea to go into Iraq, that's one thing, but equating Bush with a terrorist/mass murderer/war criminal doesn't pass the laugh test.
Remember that the 36.01 TF figure for BlueGene/L was only using 8 racks. The final BG/L will use 64 Racks.
Also, the SX-8 figure is only an estimation.
Anyone who has had a few JaegerBombs (Jagermeister & RedBull)
will tell you this is a somewhat dangerous brew.
After about 3, voices will start telling you to get up on the bar and dance, tear your clothing, and bury cab drivers in your backyard.
Hide the shovels.
I worked on it and I didn't even know this got published!
Thanks for pointing this out, now I can add this publication to my cv:)
(I'm M Tubbs, see page 1. I worked on the SIMD FPU)
I actually read a similar rumor a few months back, basically it was a powerbook with 4 PPC440s and the same SIMD FPU, not fully SMP but using a message passing interface.
A quick google search reveals nothing, however.
My understanding of speech recognition is minimal, but from what I understand the meat of this chip would probably just be a floating point SIMD engine to do FFTs, and some comparison and control logic.
I'm wondering if you could just do this with your average ATI or Nvidia 3D chip and an FPGA wrapper?
I don't think we'd hear about a successful outsourcing story,
as all of the people involved are probably busy coding away on their next project,
instead of posting to slashdot.

We don't need no stinkin' embryonic stem cells.
You know what else we didn't need? John "If I'm elected the lame will walk again" frickin' Edwards.
Can we throw Karl Rove in there somewhere to give this story the true Slashdot experience?

Remember Ruby Ridge? Waco?
you need to take a critical look at your implicit trust of ANY party.
Absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

I can't wait to get kicked out of a snooty coffee shop because my dual core G5 laptop was asphyxiating the customers . . .

100 to 1000 times more efficient worth $1M? meh. maybe.
100 to 1000 times more accurate worth $1M? definitely.
