I am glad to see that other people are thinking about this. I think it should be the supreme goal of sentients to escape the heat death of the universe, possibly to create our own.

For a fun example of such, check out Greg Egan's "Permutation City".

When someone says "socialist prick", they mean a socialist who is a prick. If it was implied that socialists were pricks, it would be redundant.

I bet you stomp and yell when someone says talks about "stupid americans", because you think that automatically implies that all americans are stupid.

  7. Re:Mixed feeling on HIV Vaccine · · Score: 4, Insightful

Generic drugs in the USA are almost as cheap as the generics in Canada. It's just that Americans don't trust generics, as they see them as inferior.

The generics in Canada are only produced after the patent expires, ie, 20 years. I don't know where you got the ridiculous idea that Canada doesn't respect US patents, but it's utterly ridiculous and ignorant. Next you'll be claiming Canadian drugs are unclean and manufactured with lacking production controls. Another myth perpetuated by the US pharmaceutical companies who see Canada undercutting their costs and stealing their mojo.

  14. Software should get better, not just bigger on Time to Kill Microsoft Word? · · Score: 2, Insightful
I hate to be another MS basher around here, but I have to put my two cents in on Word. My wife bought a Dell laptop last year with WinXP Home and Word. She has installed Firefox and Thunderbird, and that's it.. Yet MS Word manages to crash when handling its own file format.

I know enough about computers to not blame the software when the system has been junkified with conflicting software, but this does not seem like one of those situations. I see a product breaking down in "out-of-the-box" configuration. Why does it crash when loading or manipulating its own files? Perhaps they put so much work into crash recovery that they think they don't need to prevent crashes anymore.

If I'm way off here, please tell me. Maybe i have to set "thip-croinkle-spoit" (dilbert reference) to OFF? Maybe this is indicative of some other problem?

  19. What happened to redundancy? on Royal Bank of Canada Software Upgrade Goes Awry · · Score: 4, Informative

A few short years ago, the Toronto Dominion's entire network went down for a whole day. I happened to be visiting a friend a train ride away, and could not get money out to get home out of any machine. It was frustrating, and it made me wonder why my service charges hadn't gone to redundant connections and machines, but I was able to borrow some cash and get home.

But when it happened a second time, in less than a year, I got a little frustrated and switched to president's choice bank.

My wife uses Royal Bank, and her pay has not gone through yet and it is now more than several days late. I certainly hope they work later than 4pm, monday to friday, to fix this. Some people who were supposed to be paid on the 31st have bounced their rent cheque!
