  1. Fortunately for first gen Mac users... on Microsoft To Dump 32-Bit After Vista · · Score: 1

... it will be at least 5 years before a new version of Windows comes out. That is, if they even want to install Windows in the first place.

Not only that, but it doesn't apply just to Mac users - it would apply to anyone running an early Core Duo, would it not?

That thought had crossed my mind as well. I plan to setup the Active Directory equiv of home directories for each user and have them use that rather than My Documents. Plus there will be some common shares with high resolution product images, brochures, and so forth.

  4. IT & SOX on Sarbanes-Oxley - How is it Affecting You? · · Score: 1

SOX doesn't effect IT nearly as much as it does accounting. It really only dictated to us how our backups should be run, retention policies. A few of the other minor things involved how secure the servers containing financial information were (physical access), and tracking who should/shouldn't have access to financial software/files.

In all of the above cases, we were already more than compliant. The only major change was the inclusion of a "special" character in passwords to make them more difficult to crack. Our workflows did make some minor tweaks to things, but for the most part I'm not even noticing it.

  5. Internet addiction? Maybe MMORPG addiction on Only 15% of Gamers are Internet Addicts · · Score: 3, Interesting

The term 'Internet addiction' is far too broad. There are MMORPG addicts, chat addicts, porn addicts and so forth. In my eyes, the biggest sign that you are addicted to something on the internet is when it starts to cause big emotional responses. If you start crying because of someone you're chatting with who you will never meet, then you have a problem. If you start crying because some other character rolled higher for an item you really wanted, then you have a problem. If you start crying during porn, you have a problem (though its probably not addiction).

I'm almost willing to bet that more than 15% of the MMORPG population is addicted to it. What other reason would a person play EQ for 5 years?

It only makes sense that the key could be used once. I doubt Blizzard deletes old accounts, which means the key is still associated with an account, in use or not. If keys were transferrable, what would stop people from making 10 accounts on their own key? That gives you 10 accounts worth of bank space to store your junk, and with the mail system, moving the items is no problem. I mean, sure there is nothing stopping someone from buying 10 boxed editions of the game, but thats $400 in Blizzard's pocket, plus monthly fees. For anyone who plays MMO's, this shouldn't be any surprise at all. If you are coming from Halflife or some other online game, I could see how this could be confusing.

  11. Underestimating the community on Spyware for Firefox Coming This Year? · · Score: 1

Evidently these experts are underestimating the community behind Firefox. One of the big reasons behind spyware in IE is how slow Microsoft is to close up these bugs.

The Firefox decelopers on the otherhand would obviously make patching these types of things a prioity. Without ActiveX and the likes, there are alot fewer potential ways to infect someone running Firefox.

I realize that not everyone is going to be up to date with these patches, but are spyware writers really going to continue to try and come up with new exploits for Firefox when their hard work is sealed up within a day? I honestly can't see huge amounts of Firefox spyware, even if they do start to find a few holes.

Like the bug report says, the nForce2 chipset has the same IDE problems. This is the first I've heard of a Linux user complaining about it, so that would seem to confirm its not just a Windows specific problem.

My nForce2 board is an Asus A7N8X-X - when I first got it, I figured it might have just been my ancient install of Windows wanting to be reinstalled. Shortly afterwards, my brother got the same motherboard and had the exact same problems. At that point I figured it was probably an Asus problem. Evidently it *is* the chipset afterall.

Seeing as the nForce3 suffers from the same problems, I would be very hesitant before getting an nForce4 board. Nothing like blowing a ton of cash on the board and having a nice SLI setup only to have your favourite game briefly hang itself constantly.
