One thing they don't mention is if you have to sleep for a 'normal' amount after the drug wares off. So if you are awake for like 36 hours, then how long do you sleep? 8 hours? or 16 hours?

Even if this has bad long term effects, this will be very popular, everyone has those nights that they 'have' to stay up and work. Could be the procrationators drug of choice.

So all the engineers that made the old IBM drives and the drives themselves will probably just get a name change, but otherwise they will come out with the next version of them. It also states that Hitachi and IBM plan to use this company as the primary source of their hard drives (surprising!). IBM is not really leaving the HD market, they are not closing down production of their hard drives, just changing the name of the company that does it. Therefore America uses more enegry then the rest of the world per capita. If America was more efficient with it's power consumption, then we would have more time to solve this problem.

  16. Re:XP quote and more on Trouble Ahead for Java · · Score: 1

Another reason that you cannot distribute jre to a million people via cds is that at the end of the day, the JVM is not a generic deployment platform.

Any java application is just simply not able to easily deploy to a stock install of a jvm. As a java developer I know that it is much easier to install your own jdk with your client rather then use one that is preinstalled.

the jvm lacks a real versioning scheme, if you program your application for java 1.2, then run it on 1.4, it will have a slightly different behavior. This is more true with 1.4 then any other vm to date. So sun would be stupid to do this.

Java Web Start is slowly changing this, but that is very new and most people don't know about it and how to use it. And it still doesn't solve the versioning problem as when sun releases jdk 1.5 your application may suddendly be broken.

How come everyone says that MS has these unlimited resources, are you trying to imply that Sony (or nintendo) has limited resources? Actually, Sony has many more resources then MS.
Sony makes more products, many of which are considered to be very high quality (TVs, Audio, PCs, etc..) , they own a music label and a movie production studio. Unlike MS, if they need a bunch of songs for a video game instead of hiring unknowns to play, they just dip into their library of signed artists and pull out a few good hits. (thanks to the government who has taken all rights of the artist away)

All I'm saying is that MS, like all other companies cannot afford to lose this battle forever, eventuatly they will get tired of losing money and go back to just ruling the world of PCs if they don't start to get some headway soon. Video Games may be the largest entertainment market soon, but it is going to be a real pain to break into from the hardware perspective.

I dispute any benchmarks that those guys run anymore since they are completly abstract and don't have anything to do with reality.

I want to see a blind test where they just setup a bunch of computers and tell people to use all of them. Then have those people report which ones were the fastest. Of course you will say that this is a completly subjective test, but most of the time, it's not about how fast something gets done on your computer, but how fast you percieve it is being done. Which is why I still say that a really fast HD, faster then a 7200 rpm one would really fly.
