I bet that withing 5 years we will see computers that are built with no moving parts but the hard drive and cdrom. That do not require fans, and make less noise, yet still provide enough power to run all standard applications. That and all the features that you are talking about. Man it would be great if there was a PC that was more like an appliance.
I think that the rapid advancements in graphics technology may to have killed the market in many ways because the hardware advanced faster then the software. Doom 3 is the only engine that I know of that will actually try to use ALL the new features of the newest generation of nvidia cards. (well almost all) Unreal doesn't seem to be doing it, not that they need too the game already looks awesome without it.
I ment that if you consistantly deprive yourself of sleep, then it reduces your health and quality of life. Since it increases your stress and reduces your immune system. ( and turns you into Tyler Durden:) )
That said, the effects of this drug on your immune system and other body parts( liver, kidneys, heart ) are unknown to me, if they are public info I would like to hear it cause if this drug does what it says it does, I would use it.
Since this deprives you of sleep, but somehow keeps you from falling asleep, the long-term side effects of this are compeletly unknown. All the studies show that not sleeping is extreamly bad for you in the long run. Lowers immune systems, increases stress, reduces hapiness, etc. One thing they don't mention is if you have to sleep for a 'normal' amount after the drug wares off. So if you are awake for like 36 hours, then how long do you sleep? 8 hours? or 16 hours?
Even if this has bad long term effects, this will be very popular, everyone has those nights that they 'have' to stay up and work. Could be the procrationators drug of choice.
If you read the article it says that IBM and Hitachi are spinning off the sections of their companies and forming a new company that IBM will own 30% of and Hitachi 70% of. So all the engineers that made the old IBM drives and the drives themselves will probably just get a name change, but otherwise they will come out with the next version of them. It also states that Hitachi and IBM plan to use this company as the primary source of their hard drives (surprising!). IBM is not really leaving the HD market, they are not closing down production of their hard drives, just changing the name of the company that does it. It's not like they are going to put Maxtor drives in all IBM computers all of a sudden.
My favorite one was the simpsons conversion. It dodn't have it's own levels, but it changed all the characters into homer, barney and the ilk. Armore was replaced by beer and health packs by doughnuts. Fun for a couple of days at least. Doh!
Game consoles also don't have Operating Systems with the concept of multiple programs. If they even have a definable operating system at all. While they may need to be 'rebooted' they are also not really comparable to normal computers in that way. Since every program has its own OS contained on the cartridge/CDROM/DVD.
The only exception to this rule that I know of was the DreamCast, as all you ahd to do to change games was eject the cdrom, and then it went into a bios type screen where you could do memory card management and play audio cds.
is not in changing the source of our power in my opinion, but in reducing the amount of enegry that we expend. It's a policy thing. I don't know the facts, but I'm going to guess that america expends more enegry then most of the world. America also doesn't have most of the world's population. Therefore America uses more enegry then the rest of the world per capita. If America was more efficient with it's power consumption, then we would have more time to solve this problem.
Everyone acts like this problem needs to be solved today, when in fact it doesn't.
Another reason that you cannot distribute jre to a million people via cds is that at the end of the day, the JVM is not a generic deployment platform.
Any java application is just simply not able to easily deploy to a stock install of a jvm. As a java developer I know that it is much easier to install your own jdk with your client rather then use one that is preinstalled.
the jvm lacks a real versioning scheme, if you program your application for java 1.2, then run it on 1.4, it will have a slightly different behavior. This is more true with 1.4 then any other vm to date. So sun would be stupid to do this.
Java Web Start is slowly changing this, but that is very new and most people don't know about it and how to use it. And it still doesn't solve the versioning problem as when sun releases jdk 1.5 your application may suddendly be broken.
The funny thing is that they are serious about this. At least according to their own documentation.
goto http://www.microsoft.com/winlogo/hardware/HWrequir ements.asp and read the Graphics Bandwidth Requirements document. They state that they have a new rendering model that is superior to the one they use now. But then fail to explain any advantage it has. Or provide a link to any research that may help justify their decision.
How come everyone says that MS has these unlimited resources, are you trying to imply that Sony (or nintendo) has limited resources? Actually, Sony has many more resources then MS. Sony makes more products, many of which are considered to be very high quality (TVs, Audio, PCs, etc..) , they own a music label and a movie production studio. Unlike MS, if they need a bunch of songs for a video game instead of hiring unknowns to play, they just dip into their library of signed artists and pull out a few good hits. (thanks to the government who has taken all rights of the artist away)
All I'm saying is that MS, like all other companies cannot afford to lose this battle forever, eventuatly they will get tired of losing money and go back to just ruling the world of PCs if they don't start to get some headway soon. Video Games may be the largest entertainment market soon, but it is going to be a real pain to break into from the hardware perspective.
Exactly, if there was a flaw in the client, then someone could write a self propagating virus that listens to the network infecting hosts at an exponential rate.
The Guntella network is not as succectable(sp) to this attack because there are more clients written for it then the Kazaa network.
Until this happens, people won't care what they have to install to get to their beloved free mp3s.
Another company did come out with a genesis modem, the same company also came out with a modem for the SNES, it let you play 2 player games on the phone lines.
Also, the Dreamcast was the first console to have broadband support. Unfortunatly, it was killed at the same time that it got it. Damn Sony. You can use the broadband adaptor (if you can get one) to program a DC (with special tools).
---quote--- Also, don't underestimate the problem-solving ability of moving PCI cards to different slots. It really does work sometimes. ---end quote--- Why? I mean why does that work. I've done that in the past and to DOES work, but what's the difference between pci slots when they are all supposed to be 32-pci slots. Makes me want to destroy all computers before they gain the intelligence to crush all hu-mans.
I still say the the HD is the number one most underrated upgrade to make in a computer. As far as picture browsing i concerned, try moving those pictures to an even slower device (say a network share over 10mbps) and try doing the same test.
I dispute any benchmarks that those guys run anymore since they are completly abstract and don't have anything to do with reality.
I want to see a blind test where they just setup a bunch of computers and tell people to use all of them. Then have those people report which ones were the fastest. Of course you will say that this is a completly subjective test, but most of the time, it's not about how fast something gets done on your computer, but how fast you percieve it is being done. Which is why I still say that a really fast HD, faster then a 7200 rpm one would really fly.
Yeah, kinda like that, only that runs x86 applications.

Not a passwd file, SHADOW passwords.... they are so much more secure....

Exactly, like sites that sell 'adult toys' are they classified just like an image warehouse site?

Also, sonys iLink is not firewire because iLink has no power integrated. Firewire provides power to the device, Sony does not.
Salon has to make outrageous statements in order to get people to read their articles and buy the subscription. That's the way all magazines work.

It's not about quality, it's about how much we will pay for them. And the fact that they are colluding to fix the price higher then it should be.
Quality has nothing to do with the price.

but it's only as fast as your modem. The broadband adapter was a 100Mbit ethernet card!

someone writes a virus that spreads through the Kazaa or gnutella network. That will be a fun day.
p2p is the biggest ddos mess waiting to happen. If there is a hole in the client, then who knows how far it could spread before stopping.

Actually I think that the chip in the ti-92/89 is a 10mhz 68000, which is faster then the mac plus. Not that the mac plus was fast.
