The flip side is, this is the guy's company. Your departure may lead to a string of disasters that could kill it off entirely. The big question is, is there enough bad blood between you and the company that you wouldn't mind letting your boss suffer for his mistakes? If so, I don't see any reason to let your relationship continue beyond the four weeks you outlined earlier. Maybe less, if your boss's counter-offer was galling enough.

I'm sick of seeing companies (especially small ones) bring on green I.T. guys... fill their head full of responsibilities and loyalties, but pay them jack squat. Then when they get the nerve to look around or ask for a raise - it gets thrown in their face that they're "ingrates" or "ungrateful" because company x took a "chance" and hired them... and they owe it company x.

I say blow me - have fun teaching the next guy my uncommented code, and tricks to get your cheapass copier to work day after day.

You have nothing to worry about - it's your life, you make the call.

If you were so crucial to the company, you should have been given the recognition as such. End user support? System Administration? These don't sound like the jobs you spent years in school to learn.

I would politly say - "I have to move on, so bring someone in and I'll spend my three - four weeks training them... but after that, I will no longer be employeed here"

Unless you specifically signed a contract saying you would give notice after X weeks - there is no "requirement" for you to do more than what you feel like.

If he doesn't like it - leave. I'm serious. Pack your desk and leave that very minute. If you put in your two weeks under that kind of duress - it'll be hell. You'll never get a good reference anyway and your resume will speak for itself.

This is a good lesson to any company owner who relies on cheap help to do the critical tasks of I.T.... you best evaluate your corporate structure and pay scales. If you can afford to lose your I.T. people who know your systems and can fix things very quickly... are they worth paying rock bottom wages? Can you afford to lose one every year? Can you do the job they do and still be productive?

    I didn't think so.

With most fiber installs on homes, you get voice and data services (data split between Internet and TV). The box they install on your home essentially splits up the voice and data. It also includes a small UPS to keep your dialtone going in the event of a power outage.

Your internal wiring doesn't really matter. It's cat5 to the NID they install - high speed all the way... err until it hits the first hop everyone else is using.

No, I meant 500 Megabytes per minute. Some research may have helped you respond.

VXA says you'll get 43GB per hour, but in a real life you'll see ~500MB per minute which works out to about 30GB/hour. With that speed, we have backups dumped on to a 1TB NAS then written to tape. It allows the backups to flow as fast and smooth as possible to tape without having to worry about network congestion.

  19. Ack Thpt on Automated CD/DVD Archival? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Burned DVDs and CDrs have piss poor shelf life for archival material. RAID arrays can disappear at the snap of a raid card's whim (yes - it happened to me last week).

Please - re-evaluate your solution before you actually need to recover data or get (gasp) audited and need every single file to work 100% for the auditors.

Recordable optical media sold retail are not up to the standards of archival requirements of most governing bodies (like the SEC). There are optical WORM drives that are used by medical data centers and hold only 30GB on a huge platter. And most of those are getting retired for other methods.

(this is not a plug, it's just what works best for us)
There are many tape solutions like Exabyte's VXA-3 with 160GB native storage space on an $80 tape. Granted $/GB is higher than a DVD-R - the tape will not let you down. The tape is equal to ~35 DVDs and writes at 500MB+/minute.

We have an Exabyte autoloader with 10 tapes on a weekly rotation - and it was as close to heaven when we needed to restore a server. We also backup >400GB of data weekly from a few of our database servers - and need it to be there when something fails.

The entire rig will set you back about $3000 including tapes. This will give you over a TB of backup space. And the tapes are archival ready.

For your use - 1-2CDs/Day each tape will last you about 3-4 months. But it will also allow you to rotate your backups off site and give you much better utilization of space and much higher chances of recovering this data years down the road.

Please reconsider your backup solutions... if it's worth saving at all - it's worth being able to get it back later.

The DS looks like it's getting more support from GBA games than from anything else.

The big N needs to get some good games out - fast! Or the PSP is going to PP on the DS.
