The ltmodem module worked fine for me up to 2.2.14 & looks like being fixed in 2.2.18 from AC's comments on latest 2.2.18pre, but was broken with.15 -.17... This post in the archives of linmodems.org has the details (of the prob).
As for Mandrake not supporting the drivers, I recall one of the developers asking for details, or access to a box with one, on Mandrakeforum (I informed him that it would only work with a really dirty hack @ the time). --
Full plate and packing steel! -Minsc
Did you install the kernel-headers rpm for 2.2.16? - you'll need it/them - thats why you're getting refrences to 2.5 - same place you got your kernel - I couldn't see any obvious traps otherwise - had a quick look through the FAQ @: Nvidias page --
If you installed Redhat > a year ago, you'll find the Debian Install pretty familiar. Just read the Instructions & follow them......:)
Apt-get is a neat thing, but that & the much vaunted Debian "stability" are the only reasons to try Deb (bar the "political" aspects), if you already have Caldera. If you want great new features & an easy install, get the Mandrake 7.1 CD's from Cheapbytes
FYI, getting the DRI drivers to work with 4.01 is fairly easy (this supposes you have a V3 & not a V5)
dload xfree86.org linux binaries of 4.01
run xinstall.sh
run XFree86 -configure
edit your new XF86Config till it works properly (hint - do a xf86config & copy details from that to your "-configure" generated one - you need to select "generic vga" as your card though)
get: tdfx_drm-1.0-2.src.rpm & Glide_V3-DRI-3.10-6.i386.rpm from: here & follow the instructions on the page to install them
do a "modprobe tdfx" to load the module (before you "startx")
Quake III should now work, including DGA mouse (YMMV)(hint - create an.xinitrc in ~/ with "exec quake3" as the only command - if you change res ingame it tends to fsck your dektop on exit)
I agree that the documentation is sparse (nvidia does it much better), but it's early days for these drivers, & they are being actively developed.
IMHO you get better performance in QIII if you don't run a WM (& it solves the prob of hosing X on exit). Just create a ~/.xinitrc with the single line "exec quake3" (mv it to.xinitric.bak when you want to startx normally) --
Better to not share them at all then- in Prefrences-->sharing, deselect the directory your mp3's are in, that way ppl won't try to dload them in the 1st place... --
Pity my tastes are somewhat broader than the range they cater for. Metallica et all, & The clueless wonders that make up the RIAA are missing a golden oppertunity, If I could go to Metallica.com & dload (not that I would e.g. only!)my favorite ditty for $.99, albums for $5, & "best of's" for $7.50, I would, & so would millions like me.....
HMMMM, I wonder if this is Napsters ".plan" they can't have been clueless enough to think they'd get away with it.......
Give 'em 6-12 months & they could be the Search Engine frontend of the RIAA - after all, they've already shown how well they can do it...
It's like a trial version, they want you to by the professional edition.... Evrey man & his dog seems to have tried it, IMHO it's a bit like Icewm & such. It doesn't seem to have anything I want tho....
There is a very good reason that the profession of Technical Writing exists. IMHO there would be marked & rapid in the clarity of DOC's if a couple were sic'ed on to the LDP. Changes could be referred backo the HOWTO's original authors to check for factual accuracy. I expect that most Howto authors would see it as taking a load off, rather than taking it as an affront (I don't know any IRL though)
It would be great if somone like VA or RH would front with the $$$ for this (& what a way to endear yourself to the community). I guess the only prob with this idea is that the LDP has to be seen as independant.....
Fireworks obscured by misty drizzle/power,phone,TV, & ISP going strong..... No Riots Slashdot clock wrong (I hope) Drinking raspberry cordial - some mail to send & then I'm going out for something stronger.....
Download the latest gimp/kernal/Netscape 4.7 with A couple of clicks, but do they tell you you have to edit a couple of makefiles to recompile your kernal - NO, THEY DON'T. We dont mind errors, hell we EXPECT errors, please, please, TELL us about them though..... MDK has adopted lots of good things from RH, Jean-Loup, can you make the next one the Erratum page.....
Maxixmum Linux..... Was their article on Compiling as good, & what about the article by Mae Ling Mak (pictures?) The damn thing costs NZ$ 24.95, is very thin & comes in a plastic bag - so I haven't read it yet. Comp mags always seem out of date compared to what's on the net IMHO - usually the only reason I get them is for coverdisks, & I already run MDK 6.1.....

YAY!
You probably get an idea of why he's my favorite charicter from me spelling it wrong in my .sig.....

"urpmi" is their "apt-get install"
What I would like is the option to ftp a minimal base & just dload the stuff I want, like I can with Debian.......:o)
--
For M$ anyway - fast & small - kills popups - hardly any features to speak of.....
Using it now.

Hell, I wish I could say that.....
If I had a dollar for every time that GCC has barfed on me......
