Firefox with the Linky browser extension makes it far too easy to porn surf: Find TGP > Right click > Linky > Show all image links in one tab. There one click, three mouse movements and all pics downloaded. In IE it's Click > Back > Click > Back Click >....
Include a thumb alongside each of the gallery links. It's too "texty". In order to save on bandwidth and not be too graphic heavy, consider putting the thumbs on the first 10 only, or something like that. Check babes.coolios.net for an example.
Eh, Windows is really a brand, not necessarily a codebase. Who says they'll stick full win2003 boxes on each node? Maybe each node will have the bare min to run.net framework. The next ver of windows server will have a commandline only version. Maybe a single graphical server to interface with the nodes. There, now you have clue.
Well I only picked mono out as it is the most obvious open source project that is tring to address the issues. The lock-in may happen because they (MS) will get there first / have biggest deployment. Is there a viable alternative? Will Java (Java Webstart etc) be able to do it?
As an example of my rant, take a look at iTunes. Why isn't it a pure browser based software? Well it need all this other functionality and richness so it has to run on a computer. Now look at how it is distributed, must download and install. In the future I see it as an app that is simply launched from a url. And that is the way everyone wants it. (.Net CAS takes care of the security, assuming the developer does).
Agreed. Example, with html forms you do not, and never will, have the richness of native widets. Maybe xforms, but not completely. Server loop back for validation and all that crap.
Now where web applications are going is different... It's the whole XAML / Avalon /.Net thing will solve these problems. The borders between rich applications and internet services will dissapear. What Salesforce.com will do, as will amazon etc, is create a rich, internet delivered client. So you will have all the advantages of deployment, manageability and what not, and richness / responsiveness.
Other slashdot readers: now you see why mono project is so important?
yeah, doing something similar already. just doesn't cut it with all those toolbar 'helpers', removing classid's, cookie, keeping upto date etc. I see on another thread that there is consensus that nobody is doing it yet.
The problem with AdAware, Spybot etc is that they are clients that must be installed on individual windows machines. Does anyone know of a tool, like Symantac AV Corp, that has a central admin console, quarantine and auto updates clients etc? Even better, a tool that doesn't require a client and can remote scan, through administrative shares or something?

Ladies and gentlemen this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk, but Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about that. That does not make sense. Why would a Wookiee, an eight foot tall Wookiee want to live on Endor with a bunch of two foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense!
Yeah, but the.NET framework will run on the Xbox2. Homebrew is not dead yet. Just how accessible will it be is the question. And some taiwanese dude will be out with a mod chip at some stage.
Here's an interesting thought: If the also port the.Net framework, then most of the future sofware (assuming it's written in managed code (Longhorn)) will *not* have to be recompiled or rebuilt. Thus making windows and, more importantly, applications hardware agnostic.
Looking that fuckin WinXP search dog was "innovated" nearly 10 years ago!
Yeah, I know work level would increase, but would it increase revenue proportionally more, same or less?

In the interest of balance, I too will not back up my statements with any evidence...
Yeah, XP is "a bit" better than Windows 95 was. But not a heck of a lot.
You're fucking kiddin me? It's *much*, *way* better.
But with Windows you get instability without all the extra work.
WinXP is solid. Never crashed on once for me. Maybe it's just you?
This post is neither a flame nor anti-linux, simply anti-anti-winxp.
"Hey, it looks like you need to spell check!"

windowsupdate will make it a critical update and critical updates will be automatically downloaded, so why do they care?
yes
because he said RAD, fast, stable, solid and effective. Java - pick 3.
