Tyan already makes motherboards that accept four dual-core Opterons. Sure, the motherboard alone costs almost what my brand-new rig did, but they exist.
It was an in-joke. They were basically nodding to the audience, "Yeah, we know this is weird, no there isn't an explanation, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."
The budget wasn't as big back then.
Hell yeah, it looks damned persuasive. The relationship looks almost linear in the later parts of the graph. But there are some anomalies in the earlier part of the graph where the two plots look almost inverse, so if you average it out, the correlation isn't as strong as it seems at first glance. Definitely eye-raising stuff, though.
Are you guys serious? Yes, we use "cheques" all the time in the U.S. I get my wages in a check, I pay the rent with a check, etc. I do use a debit card for most purchases, though.

Pluto Probe Launches

I'm sorry, that's not the way it happened. NASA polls scientists for mission suggestions, not random websites. A mission of this magnitude has to be planned and prepared for, and that takes years. As in more than 6. In fact, this mission has been planned and laid out within NASA for a long time. The reason it took this long to launch is because each new congressional funding bill would slash the mission and then reinstate it the next time around. Signatures don't fund space missions. Congress does.
Well yeah, that would be hard;)
I think the pressure on Venus's surface is more significant than the temperature - 60 bars!(60x Earth atmosphere at sea level) I think that with careful study drawing on submarine technology, we could engineer a lander that would last longer on the surface of Venus - the trouble is the thing would be so frikkin' heavy I don't think we have a launcher that could get it there.
What gravity well? Earth's? I hate to tell you this, buddy, but anything launched from the moon is going to have to be put there by Earthlings, so it'll have to be lifted from Earth first.
Uhhh....the same exact amount? I think you'll find that the moon is in the same solar orbit as we are, so you aren't really gaining anything by launching from the moon.
I am leery of Sony's DRM as well, but I think a lot of you are missing the point here. I would jump on a well-designed and un-DRM-choked-to-death eBook reader. Yes, a laptop can read display books as well as other things, but the main feature here is the display. There is no way I would ever condemn myself to reading a long work on a standard computer moniter, even an LCD. The new eBook readers coming out use electronic ink that has similar properties to paper. Imagine being able to carry all manner of textbooks, fiction, manuals in a single device with a display that's as readable as a sheet of paper!
If you're asserting that "Sol" is the one and only proper name for our sun, than why do you go on to refer to other "solar systems"? If there is only one Sol, there is only one Solar system. Sheesh.
uhhhhhhh....no. No, sir. Having DNA and RNA is not required for something to be considered "alive." Now, any organism has to have a way to convey hereditary information, and on this planet, that's DNA and RNA. But we've never seen life from elsewhere, and I've never heard anyone seriously suggest that the way to look for extraterrestrial life involves DNA tests.
You're full of shit.
oops, meant to say almost TWICE what my rig cost.

I think BadAnalogyGuy forgot to log in.
Don't you mean, you for one welcome...

Everyone but you, apparently.
"The profit motive"??!! NASA is a government bureaucracy! They don't make any profit! You're really showing your ignorance...

If only they had it throw up a windows-like dialog box with "yes" or "no" they could get people to sign their live savings over to 7-11 very easily.
Yes, yes it was.
Yes, but they wouldn't be acheiving orbit; just up, then down.
wiki is wrong
That's some deep shit, maaaaaan.

Good show, sir. Send some mod points his way!

Uhhh, what? There was a lander on Venus thirty years ago, and Mercury isn't nearly as hot as Venus.
Uhhh....the same exact amount? I think you'll find that the moon is in the same solar orbit as we are, so you aren't really gaining anything by launching from the moon.
It. Not. Funny.
