They've studied how much force it takes to tighten a very simple overhand knot with various numbers of turns and developed mathematical theory that is good at predictions. Whilst it's interesting, most knot use is probably more interested in the opposite case of how much force is necessary to untie a knot, or how much force a knotted rope can withstand, or which knot configurations are comparable in strength. That'll take a much bigger leap in research but this is a good start.
The machines I use most are running Linux Mint or Android, but I've updated two Windows 7 desktops to Windows 10 and I like it. The Start menu is especially nice.
Criminals need light to see too. Try painting graffiti on a wall while it's completely dark. And I'll far more easily spot a torch flashing in my garden than someone hiding behind bush. I'll be lobbying my local council to do this.
Perhaps it's for men to see if the women are infected after they have sex. But really the detection should be on the inside of the condom so the woman can see if the man has an STD before the sex.
They say they'll operate like Google and Facebook, but they'll do the same as they've done with taxi regulations; ignore the rules. Don't be suprised if we hear about data protection regulations being flouted because Uber are "just a car sharing company, and not a marketting giant".
This is what I do at work, but it's because too many colleagues are either too lazy or too scared to touch the seat and they so wee all over it. With the lid down they either have to touch it and learn that a messy seat is a hazard, or choose another toilet.
Launch was scrubbed because a boat had wandered onto the launch range. I wonder why the coastguard wasn't policing the range like they did for shuttle launches? Anyway, launch scheduled for 5.19 PM tomorrow.
I watched Baumgartner's jump live and a follow up documentary on it and it seemed to me far too much credit for his jump was given to him. He got claustrophibic in the suit so dropped out of the project for an entire year and only came back when he got worried that a test pilot making test jumps in his place might do the actual record jump and deny him his press. I like this new one, seems to have been done for the right reasons.
A lot of people think that Scotland is walking blindly towards independence without knowing what they're doing. I'd like to remind them that Scotland has voted for independence twice before but both times it's been blocked.
In 1914 Scotland voted for independence from the UK, but then the First World War started and it was conveniently dropped.
In 1979 Scotland voted again for much more local power through devolution, but some dodgy rule dictated that at least 40% of the total registered electorate had to vote for devolution, and even though they got the majority winning by 51.62% Yes to 48.38% No the vote was overturned because the Yes vote comprised only 32.9% of the total possible vote.
So this has been a long time coming.
More likely he laid has parachute on the ground for packing and accidentally picked up a rock without noticing and it was ejected when he pulled the chord. They probably can't find the "meteorite" because it's just a rock sitting amongst identical rocks.
It's a question cos I'm going to delete my Slashdot bookmarks and avoid the site for a while cos of this rubbish. When I come back it'll be with a fresh perspective!

Can I run AdBlock on it?

Yes, they didn't bail out the banks, but in doing so they allowed someone in Iceland to steal £30,000 of my money.

I get it now. They're going to kill the candidates before they launch them. No need for food, water, air or a safe landing.

I just watched Colossus: The Forbin Project, and lets not teach AI anything more please!

Anyone like to repost the content for us poor UK residents who aren't allowed to see the BBC's own content!?
Actually, drinking nothing but pure water when you're dehydrated can often be very dangerous.
Just watched it again frame by frame and the pebble falls directly from his parachute as it unfurls above his head. Nuff said!

Didn't one or more of the people accusing Julian Assange of criminal conduct work for USAID?
