    ...concerning MS in Europe? I'm just interested to see how deeply entrenched they are there financially. It may be just the stuff I'm reading, but open source seems to have a stronger foothold there than in the States.

    You're correct; I've never surfed. By I do bike and do other outdoor stuff regularly, and I do it to get away from things for a while. Then again, to each his own.

    ...any time you have lifelong beauracrats running a program---they are more interested in prolonging the program than accomplishing anything. I believe we need to get back to the 19th century in terms of our government, where all federal jobs are up for replacement with each new administration. I know it would be a nightmare, but maybe someone would think it was time to cut some of the dead wood out instead of replacing it.

    I understand that. My point is that these companies DO work together on network configuration and other issues (that's why the same phone won't work across all networks).

    ...I agree with the poster who mentioned the competition aspect of this. Many, many people will code for money, but the really good ones code to not only put food on the table, but know that they can be or are the best at what they do.

    I'm with you on the cell phone thing, although my work demands that I have one. However, if you live in an older home (as I do), it is much, much more convienent to set up a wireless network. One comment about corporate wireless, though: in my limited experience with it, most of the execs who want it are fascinated by the whiz-banginess of it, not the true utility. And don't even begin to explain the security precautions they need to take...

    if it has "soul" or not. I want something that's better than IE, not because I don't want to use an MS product, but because I know it's mediocre. Why is it mediocre? Because it can be---the general public uses it anyway because it's right there on the desktop. I want IE to be innovative the way Mozilla and Opera have been. Why? because good, innovative products make for better competition.

    that's my big complaint about 2.6: it still didn't address 3D issues with ATI Radeon cards. Is this an issue with ATI not releasing binaries to people like Suse? I'm just a casual GNU/Linux type, so I'm not sure.

    ...purchases in the last few months and I have to say that the "megapixel race" is becoming like the megahertz race in that many people use that feature alone as their determining factor. Rarely do they want to discuss optical versus digital zoom (something that Kodak is addressing with their DX6490, a 10X OPTICAL zoom in an inexpensive, well-built camera), output format, etc.

    ...I believe it's long overdue. What relief do those who settled now get? IANAL, but I don't believe they can sue over a settled case. DirecTV got what they wanted; they threw a scare into potential pirates. Do you think they care about what little PR they're going to get over this? Of course not; it'll blow over by tomorrow and we'll move on to the next miscarriage of justice.

    but I believe the centralized concept of the 'net is something that is coming to an end, much to our loss. I'm pretty bothered by the fragility of this system. How many of you can't work without web access?

    I would love to see a simpler phone without features like Bluetooth. This would eliminate some of this out of the box. I may be in the minority, but all I need to do on my cell phone is make phone calls.

    ...going to be before Apple becomes a media company who just happens to sell software and computers? Right now, there are definitely a hardware company that sells software. But with the iPod, and whatever next Big Thing that will follow, I have to wonder how much of the bottom line is going to be based on media content?

    ...throwing down the gauntlet. I have had a Yahoo Plus account for a little over a year now, so I got my 2Gb space when I logged in this morning. At this point, Yahoo has the advantage of an online calendar (a great tool if you are a traveler)and the ability to sort your mail into folders. I also have a GMail account, mainly because it was offered to me. While the idea of that much space is appealing, I don't like not being able to sort my mail. Furthermore, I believe this encourages people to store documents online, a practice that is, IMHO, dangerous given the problems that Hotmail has had recently.

    ...I agree with your sentiment. WMP is crappy, IMHO. I would love to see something based on Winamp, for example. However, as another poster said, we have the opportunity to start our own company and run it using anything we wish. No I have to go make a sacrifice to Redmond so I don't get eaten.

    ..been a sore spot with me. Most users do a RAID 0 setup so their cool rig is hottie fast. Truth is, I can't see much real world performance difference. For my money, a large SATA drive and an external FireWire for backups is the way to go. Simple setup, no worries about drive failure and losing data, and still fast enough for UT2004.
