  1. Re:Didn't RTFA... on New(?) Anti-Fraud DNS service · · Score: 4, Informative

OpenDNS has been around for YEARS. The original reason it was made had nothing to do with any of this, it was so that members could vote to add new root domains that would have never been added to the "official" DNS servers. It was an end run around ICANN, basically. There are very few restrictions on OpenDNS on what can be added, and it's all voted on by the members. I actually tried using OpenDNS for awhile, but I had problems with it. There just weren't enough servers, and those that were there went down frequently. They acted as a relay to the "real" DNS as well, so you could resolve .com, .net, .org, etc. But after the 5th DNS outage in a month, I finally set BIND on my server to hit the root servers again instead of OpenDNS. The service just wasn't reliable enough. These goals that are being mentioned in this article have absolutely nothing to do with what OpenDNS was supposed to be about. Either TFA is BS written by a media drone who has no clue what's going on, or OpenDNS has radically changed its goals since I last used it a year ago. I hope for their sake that it's the former.

Um...taking the rumble out makes it lighter and more ergonomic, so that's a good thing? They didn't even mention Nintendo, who blew everyone away at E3 and stole the show...Sony was virtually ignored, so it's likely that "E3 video" was really just Sony propoganda in disguise. That was the most arrogant piece of BS I've ever seen...even Microsoft hasn't put out propoganda that bad, and that's saying something.

Windows wouldn't reinstall, it would get a fatal error at the exact same spot every time. I finally figured out what the problem was...the power supply! It was apparently dying, and it was probably a cheap power supply to begin with (it came with the case).

I haven't had the opportunity to try WOW under Wine yet (my high-end computer does not have Gentoo on it *yet* due to me lacking a second hard drive), but I've heard it works very well. As long as WOW works under Wine, I really don't have any use for Windows...it's really the only non-console game I play anymore. Ubuntu is extremely easy to set up and use, though I don't use it myself...I started on Linux at the same time that Win95 came out, so I for the most part learned both at the same time, so I didn't have to change my way of thinking like long-time Windows users have to. Ubuntu just doesn't give me the compile-time control that Gentoo does. However, if I had to recommend a Linux distro to my mom, or my grandmother, it'd definitely be Ubuntu.

The only people that this will affect are 1) People who think they have a legal copy of Windows but really don't because whoever they bought it from screwed them, and 2) People with legal copies who either don't want to run WGA for some reason, or 3) People with legal copies who run WGA and it mistakenly identifies their machine as "not legit". It's likely that he had been doing something to annoy their customers and wasn't just minding his own business and surfing. This would mean that the restaurant already had the cops there once before and had the guy banned. We had to do things like this in the convenience store I used to work at as an assistant manager all the time - usually to drunks or homeless that would constantly try to bum money off of people. Anyway, if the cops told him he couldn't come back and he did, it wouldn't be "theft of service" that they'd charge him with, but *trespassing*. If someone that is known to have been banned from your property proceeds to come back, calling 911 is definitely the correct thing to do. I have a feeling that the article author heard that this guy had been using free wireless internet and decided to twist the truth of what actually happened. Well, if you want to get technical, it is possible to use microwaves to beam power between two antennas. However, the things they show on that link are not the right shape to do it, nor would they be able to handle the amount of power they're talking about transferring. It would require a fairly high power microwave transmitter, and you'd have to align the two dishes together very precisely. It would also be very inefficient, the transmitter would use a lot more power than you could ever hope to recover at the other end. Also, it would likely be very dangerous to stand in between the dishes, you'd likely receive severe burns. I can actually see this technology being used in orbit...satellites with lots of solar panels "beaming" power to a ground station (in this case the ineffeciency wouldn't matter so much, because the energy you're capturing is "free" from the sun), but the amount of power this would provide would be negligeable compared to what we already generate. You would need an absolutely huge number of satellites and ground stations to make any appreciable amount of power, and the ground area this takes up could be used far more efficiently for other things. Okay, that's enough of a rant there...I agree, when they do stuff like this on Slashdot, they make it WAY too obvious that it's an April Fools joke.
