Galileo, the European answer to the US Military-owned GPS...At a cost of over $4 Billion, is this system really going to offer any major advantages over GPS
yes, it will not be controlled by the militairy. i thought that was pretty obvious.
people think DVD is alive, it's alive and well. i'll tell you what the people think is dead and rotten, it's audio cd's. tell me why they would want to continue their audio battle but they already gave up on the dvd piracy? who are these people who decide on this stuff and how do they get so out of thouch with their customers?
hmm, don't know. it always sounds bad to me to have such large filesystems. are all files in there without subdirectories? perhaps you can move the subdirs of to other volumes. if you care to shell out large amounts of cash for support etc. you could go with veritas fs/vm. in that case the OS will be supported by RH and your fs by veritas.
so, 2 years ago, it might have been a somewhat great idea that they had with their phantom console. but in the meantime MS has released the 360, which has all the features that the phantom would have had (download games, etc). they wouldn't have had it easy back then, but now it's even more impossible for them.
Recommending a customer to go with Linux would have required them to use GFS to keep it supported by Redhat, however there is no Veritas or Legato backup agent for GFS at this point in time which means they would have had issues backing up the file systems or having a system that would have been completely un supported.
don't you see this is the problem with closed source software, imagine nbu being oss, a agent would have been available a long time ago, because a lot of people want/need this! ofcourse, veritas is in no rush to develop this agent, they rather sell thier own solution and get even more money. i agree though, that in a lot of cases closed software is holding back linux, in a lot of cases the vendors can not keep up with newer versions of oss, it looks like a weakness for us, but it really shows how weak they are in reacting to the market. (btw, this game goes for almost every new released os, hp software will take a while to support new stuff from sun, veritas is always late with hpux support etc etc)
How many are big steaming piles of code crap? Of the programs installed on your box, how many are in permant beta?
the ratio is probably about the same as on windows. or do you just believe the marketing talk that tells you how stable its supposed to be and bump up version numbers just to look good.
they should use the gecko engine or khtml as their html rendering engine (i don't care which shell they put around it). that would benefit everybody, but they will never do such a thing (at least apple has half a clue).
Whilst nothing will be bug free it's kinda moronic to see the same bullshit modded +5 funny day in day out along with the BSOD jokes in 2005 and clippy jokes. They really aren't funny to the majority of people who will find the current MS OS stuff to be pretty stable
We keep repeating these same windows jokes because you keep repeating the same linux jokes.
Is there anything out there equivalent to windows update? Windows wins this one
Luckily for us linux users there is nothing like Windows Update available for us. Thank god, we have much better updating tools and each an all of them beat WU hands down in flexebility and ease of use. Most of this comes due to the fact that linux has much better package management.
in the stone age (or even the greeks etc.) people thought that any natural phenomena was a work of god(s), even things like lightning, rain, storm, seasons etc. the reason was simple, these people had nothing else but god(s) to explain everything around them. science has shown us why and how all these phenomena occur, there still are unexplained things in the universe, but do you really want to get on to the same level as a caveman and seek the solution in a god?
Near the end of every fiscal period, any money left over in the budget is very quickly spent, because if there is anything left over at the end the auditors assume that the department obviously didn't need the money and the next years budget will be reduced by that amount. This punishes efficient management and rewards sloth, abuse and waste. But this is government, and thereby I merely repeat myself.
this is not only done at government (IT) departments, but also in a lot of corporations. well, i know they do it where i work, and i'm guessing we're not alone (oh, don't mind trying talking sense to them, most managers have lost the capability of logic thinking a long time ago).
Did we forget about this article featured on/. some time ago? (it even deals with data forensics in the UK) where they explain that the police have no clue how to get data from pc's or disks and less then 1% of them are trained to do this kind of work.
if you are in such a situation it is logical you need as much time as possible to recover encrypted data from suspects. mind you, this doesn't mean i agree with the 90 days proposal or anything, it is just one of the possible reasons.
what would happen if sony (or any other company, sony just taken by example) suddenly decides it was a bad idea to begin with and leaves this organisation? will they be able to sue all the projects that made use of sony patents or will the patents used during the period a company was member stay 'free of use'?
so RH (or any other commercial distro) will not at random accept your changes to the code and support them, but guess what - most companies don't even want to do this. still the products are open, because the companies will have the freedom to switch distros as they see fit without any fears of components not working together. oh, they can even switch between hardware architectures if they would so please. then, for companies with the knowledge in house, they will most likely not buy RH/Suse (or their support) and adjust the parts they want and support it on their own. you see, it's freedom anyway you look at it...
the linux rise originated from 2 things, the internet and colleges (nobody ever mentions the 'colleges', but i'm convinced it is). i was converted to linux during the year 1997, when a fellow student was telling about it, and i remember talking about it with my friends at college and then even installing it a week later 'just to check out', the rest is history... it didn't only happen to me that way, but a lot of other students had been trying it out as well. probably these companies are noticing this too, a lot of people who are starting to look for jobs will know OSS and promote it as well. how will they ever know those other companies products, when they never heard about them before (i'm not talking MS here, but others like CA, HP, BMC, etc... which are expensive and you wont find them easily in colleges). and when they are introduced to them they'll say - yeah, but, i can already do that with well-known-oss-project a lot cheaper+more flexibel, so take your crap somewhere else please...
it will be yet another way to rip off the honest folks. first, they will set the monthly fee at such an amount that on a yearly basis it will be higher then paying for an upgrade each year (but it will _look_ cheaper because it is cut up into little amounts). in the meantime the people who use the software in an illegal/unofficial way, still won't be paying. result; the honest man pays for the cheaters among us once again.
i don't believe this shell will pull unix admins over the line and want them to use windows. it will be a great addition for NT admins, at least for the ones that are in need for one (as most nt admins i know don't know how to script their way out of a one-way-street). for us, old unix chaps, this MSH is nothing but a shell to windows which add nothing to our interest. i mean, it is still completely different from anything unix, and it will never be like it. it's not because they slam some shell onto windows unix admins will suddenly like this complete mess known as windows.
For example, Microsoft technologies have far more dominance in the USA than in Europe.
where did you get that idea? i would say there is no difference between US and EU in MS usage. don't be fooled by those few reports of cities switching to linux, in percentage it means nothing.
who remembers those warez group intros before a game starts, most of them also contained some form of EULA which says something like this: we provide these games for test reasons only, you can try them out for 2 days and must then delete them. if you like the game you should buy it blah blah blah...

Cell is going to enable PS3 developers to create movie-quality game
oooh, but i thought the PS2 did that already?
Ah yes, so it's a backdoor. good, that makes it alright then. Silly us getting worked up about a security hole which never was!

then use debian, a powerfull distro that can give you a fully working system in a few 100MB.

if i look at most peoples home windows pc, it's already add-supported ;)
Just ask HP how great SAP is!
