The sales practices of the various Yellow Pages can be real shady. I've noticed that the more irrelevant YP becomes (I throw mine right in the recycle bin), the more they use these types of deceptive practices.
While your company was well within its legal rights to not pay, I wonder whether the fact that it is "in collections" will affect your company's D&B rating and Paydex score. Not a big problem if you don't want to borrow money or need credit from a supplier, but it could be a hassle nonetheless.
1: You are an idiot with computers.
2: The default 'do not show file extensions for known file types' is on for explorer.
But these are the same people who click "Allow" when their software firewall says "H4xoR!tR0jun.exe is attempting to access the Internet, install a malicious script, steal your personal information and have sex with your wife until she screams like a deaf girl. Permit or Allow?" There is no way to protect these people and still have their computers be useful/enjoyable for them.
That as about as logical as justifying a bunch of country yokels in white hoods as just "fighting anti-white people-ness".
The idea that the KKK is made up of the rural poor has been shown to be false. KKK members are distributed between urban and rural areas in percentages consistent with the general population. The same goes for income and class. For the record, neither do KKK members predominantly belong to fundamentalist Christian denominations. The only thing that is consistent about their membership is that--predictably--they are *overwhelmingly* white and mostly nominally Protestant. So, it seems that ignorance and meanness is not limited to those of us who happen to live in areas with a lower population density.
But thanks anyway for stereotyping us in the midst of your moralizing.
Republicans attack Democrats, Democrats attack Republicans, Microsoft attacks OSS, Iran attacks Israel and US policies, Rosie attacks the Donald, blah, blah, blah...
Does your Tivo let you use bittorrent to automagically download new episodes of shows that don't air in your market? Or choose codecs and options to *REALLY* compress archived content, for long term storage?
No, not that I know of. That's probably important to some people but to me...not so much. I want to plop down in front of the TV and grab the remote and press a few buttons and have the thing work. As far as I can tell, that doesn't seem to happen with any of the PC-based solutions.
FTA (MythTV): The solution would have required me to learn the tv_cat tool well enough to concatenate the two sets of listings and set up a cron script to do this every night. A very simple technical challenge, by my standards but I gave up after my very first try. Despite the straightforward nature of any program with "cat" in it's name, I hit an error on my first try, put the keyboard down...
FTA (Vista): Now, here's MY killer issue with this install... ready? Drivers. Yep, I said drivers as in: problem in Windows despite being rock solid in Linux. Surpirised? Well me too but I shouldn't be because it's conventional wisdom that Windows stays in beta until at least 2 years after major version launch. So anyway, my video cap card doesn't fully work! Only one of two tuners is recognized. I've tried all the standard tricks and latest driver releases, with no success yet. Even my long distance call to Hauppauge was fruitless and I suspect that I'll be waiting for some system update or new driver release before I can watch one show while recording another. Or maybe I will fix it before then, but certainly not without a little googling, FAQ searching, or phone queueing.
Like I indicated in my previous post, this is the sort of thing that my brother-in-law ran into a couple of years ago. When it can be done as easily as say, downloading and installing Centos, I'm willing to give it another try if the hardware doesn't cost twice the price of a Tivo (if I remember rightly, the video card alone from a couple of years ago was >$200).
It might be right for you if that sort of thing is your bag, but as for me, it's just too much dicking around with hardware and software for simply watching TV.
With the way the market looks to be headed, certified systems that contain cablecard adapters will only be available at the "high-end" (same shit, higher price) of the consumer PC market. It keeps the price high enough that instead of hacking some windows box, you may as well save yourself some money and buy yourself a Tivo.
While I understand that some people just like to wrench their own stuff, can either MythTV or Vista really outperform a Tivo at this point?
A couple of years ago, my brother-in-law and I each bought all of the crap to make a PVR--it was much more expensive than just buying a Tivo. I sold my stuff on eBay and bought a Tivo and have been more than happy with it. My brother-in-law kept his--it worked like shit and he eventually got a Tivo too.
Our ancestors knew this. They also knew this, so I have a hard time giving too much credence to historical child-rearing practices. I have raised two children, and, while a fourteen-year-old might be physically closer to an adult than a child (I was sixteen, as were my brothers and children before we hit puberty), I reject the notion that this necessarily holds true for emotional/mental development.
Certainly, it would be folly to treat a teen like a child, but would treating them as an adult be any better. Here's an idea: I say that one should parent a fourteen-year-old as if he or she were fourteen. More freedoms and latitude than a twelve-year-old, less than a sixteen-year-old.
<quote>then, in your opinion, at what age does this immaturity magically disappear?</quote>
Well, according to the auto insurance companies, age 25 is statistically a good indicator that they better understand risks. I also believe that there is some sort of evidence that brain maturation isn't complete until around that age.
Frighteningly enough, the company that I worked for before I struck out on my own was still using cc:Mail in 2003. I've heard that they switched to Notes/Domino since then, but DAMN!!!!
Either that or "Yippee! Slashdot Editors Find Yet Another Lame Excuse to Bash Bush Administration"...from the 'Anything-we-can-get-our-hands-on' department. Having Borderline Personality Disorder is a prerequisite to being a/. editor. Apparently you didn't get the memo.
I can't stand coffee, I can't even stand the smell of the stuff. Heresy! You can't stand the smell? I could see not liking the taste of it, but the smell? Heresy, I say!
For the love of God, the aroma of brewing coffee is rivaled only by the smell of bacon frying or that of some good chronic when you first put the flame to it.
With a little spurt of Jack Daniel's I'm a little uncomfortable with the term "spurt," especially if we're talking about something that's going in my coffee.
True, but a conical burr grinder is better than a standard burr. Conical burr grinders process the beans more slowly (hence less heat) and more uniformly, which is also important. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a coffee grinder that doesn't make a hellacious mess.
Jamaican Blue Mountain ranks right up there with Kona as the most overrated coffee on the market today. It has a weak body, insipid flavor, and a medium acidity that does not stand out in any way. It is equivalent to any private reserve Columbian. Amen. Sometimes I think that I must be the crazy one because so many coffee neophytes are running around saying how good these varieties are. Price != quality in this case.
Personally, I like strong-bodied, lower acid coffees fairly dark roasted. Fortunately, we have a roaster/cafe in the neighborhood who will roast to order. My preferred method of preparation is a black americano w/ an extra shot or, when it's warm out, an iced americano. Every time I introduce a brewed strong dark coffee aficionado to americano, they have switched. The only problem is that a competent espresso machine is pretty expensive.
Ya (error: comma needed) I can see all of the 'Hilljacks'(Hillbilly Jackass) now "Them chiyenees has gots a fake disneey land... Mama faynted, git me my shotgun!"
I dont (error: don't) care what the reasoning is (error: comma needed) it will be BS. The fact is (error: that) this doesnt (error: doesn't) effect (error: the word is "affect") their US business because I dont (error: don't) see americans (error: capitalization needed) flying to china (error: capitalization needed) to go to some disneyland (error: capitalization needed) clone. If the public here gets pissed because some chinese (error: capitalization needed) kids get to go to DL (error: comma needed) then we all deserve the swriling (error: spelling) toilet bowl this country has become.
To the parent. (error: delete period, add colon) Do you hate China? Would you rather we kept all of OUR money in OUR country? How bout you think of the cost of not doing business with them (error: comma needed) huh? Yeah (error: comma needed) youd (error: you'd) be happy about that for one hour until you couldnt (error: couldn't) go out and by (error: the word is "buy") your everyday conviences anymore. You sir are a Racist.
It's interseting that while you poke fun at the syntax and pronunciation of Appalchian and/or Southern people, you cannot seem to produce a decent sentence yourself. You Sir, are illiterate.
This is true. Three years ago people on/. were predicting the demise of Intel and now they're on top again. Personally, I am going to always do a cost/benefit analysis of any component I use.
Until recently the balance usually tilted in favor of AMD, but I guess that I don't see how brand loyalty will benefit me at all. What am I going to get, better service from one of the two companies? In seven years in the PC business, I have never had the occasion to even talk to someone at either Intel or AMD.
But this business of Apple buying AMD, that's just some silly blogger nonsense.
I ask people about their management philosophy, but for people who aren't very reflective, they don't have a lot to say.
This is an excellent point. For whatever reason, many of the really talented managers that I have worked with are simply "naturals." They haven't a clue how to articulate how they do what they do--they just do it. I realize that this probably rubs many/.ers the wrong way, but the smartest and most reflective people aren't necessarily the most effective managers.
One such manager that I used to work with was Patti. She was unremarkable in every way (looks, intelligence, education) and I guarantee that she had never read any "management philosophy" books. But she had a naturally calm and pleasant demeanor, an innate ability to make correct decisions on the fly, and great ability to prioritize. Her honesty and integrity just gave her such an air of authority that she rarely had to use the power of her position to get her people to get the job done. Needless to say, she was always the top-performing manager in her category.
Personally, I would much rather have this type of person than some hot-shot who thinks that he is the smartest guy in the room.
Not to pile on (well, maybe a little), but that is the run-on sentence from Hell. My high-school English teacher would have kicked his/her ass for that.
Yes that accurately describes just about any case in the USA legal system. If you're poor you're guilty. If you're middle class you're aquitted. If you're upper class you are rarely charged.
That is unless some powerful politician or someoneelse with more suction than you can profit from you being fucked by the system.
But at least if you're rich you have a shot--if they would have been poor, they would have been totally screwed.
What is completely wrong? In this case, drug dog statistics were *not* kept by Knox County, TN--they were culled from incident reports filed by the dog's PO handler and matched against convictions. Currently, only Florida requires that drug dog track records be kept (as a result of Florida v. Matheson).
Good luck working this defense if you're poor because there's no way your public defender is going to subpoena all of those records and go through them. No, you'll have to hire a serious lawyer with a serious staff and it will result in some serious billable hours, so it's going to cost you some serious jack to stay out of jail.

Last month I dove into the swimming with my Motorola cell phone in the pocket of my swim trunks. I would not turn on even when I switched batteries.
I removed the battery and laid it in the sun--in 36 hours it had dried completely and works perfectly.
