As far as I know, there is no region coding in the HD-DVD spec at the moment. Certainly doesn't make up for all your other qualms, but a step in the right direction.
Whenever in that type of situation, I generally bid maximum + $0.02 + the bid increment, which prevents the "current bid" from obviously being your maximum. For instance, if I make my max bid $20.52, and someone bids $20, the current bid will be $20.50, instead of $20.02 (which reveals your maximum). It's overthinking things, and often a complete waste of time to even think about, but I've won enough auctions that way to convince me it sometimes makes a difference.
I agree. Not only are there more people with laptops, particularly with the addition of wifi, a lot more people who wander off when using the internet in libraries, coffee shops, and campuses.
I bet there's been a substantial increase in cell phone theft since 1990 as well, that doesn't mean it's headline-worthy.
I remember the moment when I decided to let my Nintendo Power subscription lapse. I had never really connected the dots until I opened to the "letter of the month", and the entire thing was:
Hopefully this hasn't been mentioned to death and I didn't notice it. Has the topic of gathering and/or selling customer information been breached? I would think the possession of all the intrusive rebate form responses, not to mention the address where the rebate will sent, would be valuable to the companies who receive them.

Heh. Using google to search for something in China, that's a good one.

In case anyone hasn't been informed of the "truth about myspace".

Maybe their plan on keeping the service up to date is to add an RSS feed for http://./
It must be the popularization in the mass media of conversations like:

Are you adding names using the @gmail.com after their username? That was the only way I could get it to work.

A camera would be more subtle than a headset anyway, I suspect.
