As far as I know, there is no region coding in the HD-DVD spec at the moment. Certainly doesn't make up for all your other qualms, but a step in the right direction.

Whenever in that type of situation, I generally bid maximum + $0.02 + the bid increment, which prevents the "current bid" from obviously being your maximum. For instance, if I make my max bid $20.52, and someone bids $20, the current bid will be $20.50, instead of $20.02 (which reveals your maximum). It's overthinking things, and often a complete waste of time to even think about, but I've won enough auctions that way to convince me it sometimes makes a difference.

I agree. Not only are there more people with laptops, particularly with the addition of wifi, a lot more people who wander off when using the internet in libraries, coffee shops, and campuses. I bet there's been a substantial increase in cell phone theft since 1990 as well, that doesn't mean it's headline-worthy.

It must be the popularization in the mass media of conversations like:

    • Jesus...
    • What?
    • I just thought... you were a guy.
    • Most guys do.

Hopefully this hasn't been mentioned to death and I didn't notice it. Has the topic of gathering and/or selling customer information been breached? I would think the possession of all the intrusive rebate form responses, not to mention the address where the rebate will sent, would be valuable to the companies who receive them.
