    yes I feel for you.

    We are on the cusp of a turn over also and we just finding out how invasive it is. We use a number linux machines to monitor and report information from remote locations, control equipment, report weather data, etc. all these machines will be locked out of the general network and therefor the usefulness of these systems are greatly diminished. Any new system development we are told must be done with win2k, IIS and MSSQL, etc.

    I wish there was a central channel or voice of dissent (other than /. that is). We have been told to cooperate and resistance is futile. I for one do not welcome our new NMCI overload.

    It is hard to believe but true.

    Here is a good
    article that sums up the situation.

    The NMCI contract get very little press but it is a huge contract that will cripple the navy and lock out any competion or innovation.

    NCMI (or EDS aka Evil Data Systems) owns the entire network (WAN/LAN). You are not allowed to plug anything into it that does not run MS. This include the wide range of IP enabled device that are becoming available.

    Time to get back to the basics folks.

    Good writing should really be done on the primary writing environment - that is cuneform and clay.

    You should really forego the modern inventions of typewriters, ink and paper and such as they will contaminate the muse and offend the gods. Nothing like the smell and feel of freshly pressed clay tablets.

    Since you have responsibilities, then don't be irresponsible (actually dumb in this case). From the article...

    Los Alamos Computers' Sandine said that given the lack of information available, it would be "irresponsible of any business owner to send $699 per CPU to SCO."

    I suspect your are trolling but what are you risking by not buying licence? After several years of court cases and if you happen to find yourself in the odd multiverse that SCO won then at that time you would be legally responsible for a licence at the going rate of $699. Just think of the interest you will have saved.

    The article starts with...

    The SCO Group has been threatening corporate Linux users with legal action unless they obtain a license for its intellectual property, but until now, businesses have been unable to buy that license.

    Now I may not be kept up to date on the current SCO status but I thought last week SCO said they have no plans to sue linux users - no?

    So if they are not going to sue, what motivation would anyone have to but a licence?

    And how the heck can they demand payment before clearing establishing their IP?

    Very good point! They should be required to place the large amount of hard to understand text between the buyer and seller at purchase time! Have lengthy wordy and restrictive agreements would be viewed as a impedement to sales and retailers would push for simplified licencing.

    I have noticing that their stock price has risen lately - eventhough their disclosed "violations" have proven to be a farce. Any theory's why that is? I don't buy the short squeeze theory.

    Could it be that certain players would more than eager to fund such a company since directly attacking Linux would have severe political ramifications? I can think of several companies that would love to see Linux just go away or at least get bogged down in legal proceedings.

    Another question are identities of purchasers of stock public record?

    Seriously your Director should be smart enough to see thru this. You do not pay fees based on rumors and rumors btw that have been proven to date to be baseless.

    One of the interesting issues with this case is that SCO distributed via GPL the very code they claim is their code. The obvious question that people have asked is why didn't they recognize this code in their distribution. Now i guess their defence is that they didn't recognize it because they didn't write it - IBM did.

    I think the company surely wishes to remained undisclosed as I for one would short their stock for being stupid.

    And it takes a monopoly to be able to survive such stunning blunders like missing the emergence of something as powerful as the internet.

    Without MS monopolistic cash income stream they would have suffered serious blows screwing up like they have. That is why I wish that part of the settlement MS would have been prevented them from buying technology but force them to "innovate" from scratch and compete.

    Filter junk snail mail (3 to 4 pieces per day) Cost: 15 seconds.

    Maintaining filtering software, filtering those that slip thru, and periodically check the "deleted" box for false positives cost me on average > 15 minutes per day.

    The difference is that junk e-mail costs the sender very little and consequently the increasing rate of junk mail. When I give my e-mail to a customer or friend and I have to warn them that e-mail is no longer a reliable form of communication as the possibility of be filter out is getting greater and greater.

    This is appropiate thread as I think it was Reagan who said Peace thru strength. If you examine your list and research the history you will typically find these actions were to check some corrupt despot that thought his subjects were his to kill, torture and disregard any form of basic human rights. Most "peace activist" fail to recognize or understand this. .

    It is also interesting that you started your list after 1945. Any reason for that? If you want to look an pure numbers killed in the last century the europeans hold that honor and distinction.

    good point.

    The original poster sounds a little whiny to me.

    My wife has a small internet ecommerce store and she has been burned shipping to eastern europe before. The oringal poster should learn how it feels to ship a $200 package off only to find out the credit card number is stolen and you have no recourse. There is no address validation for Europe so every package is risk.

    What makes you think it cannot happen again.

    Sure the next time the passengers are not going to sit back and wait and chat on their cell phones but if the highjackers use overwelming force such as a toxic aerosol or shotgun than it can happen again. It is a low cost method to cause serious damage.

    Since 9/11 there have been instances where people have walked on to a plane with a handgun in their carry on luggage.

    Seems like a black body surface treatment would be better.

    Now that I think about it I remember those little evacuated glass bulbs with the a small turnstile with small paddles - one paddle is black and the other is white. When placed in the sun they turn. That should be enough to prove the concept.

    Perhaps he means somthing like a html or xml extension that allows a site to add drop down menus that would be displayed consistantly and would just be another native nav bar built into the browser. This function is often attempted with reams of Javascript which are often incompatibile and are always implemented differently (artistically) adding to user confusion.

    Something like:
