The problem is everything is network enabled these days. We have data acquisition hardware, remote monitoring camera's, telephones, even HVAC system, etc. hooked to the network. If we cannot hook up said device to the network then most stations will build and maintain 2 seperate networks.
This would be true if one size fits all. If what you say is true then why not propose a single solution for all of the DoD. And why stop there - why not all of the federal govenment or maybe the whole country should just standardized on a single solution than we may lose some flexability but we would make up for it elsewhere?...err wait a minute I think I just paraphrased Microsoft business plan.
Organization and people all have different needs and desires. A computer that was sized for the "heavy" computing needs of a receptionist does not fit the niche of a engineer that wants to install Perl on their machine or run X to process data on a remote machine. Yes I know there are different steps of standard desktops supplied, but have you looked at the top of the line - its a dog. So what will happen is that you will have 2 computers on your desktop and 2 networks. One to send e-mail and use office products and another "project" computer that you can control and get your work done.
Also, from a security point of view if your systems look alike a single virus or attack has the potential to wipe you out in short order.
A shame no slashdot readers are fit enough to join the navy
What the heck are you talking about! In fact, I would venture a guess a significant number of slashdot readers work in one way or another for the Navy - I am one.
Were I work we fear the NMCI contact mentioned in the article. Primarily because it shoves MS solutions down our throats and takes away our ability to choose the best approach to an application. In the project I work for we are in the process of replacing older Solaris/Sun based machines for Linux/Intel workstations. We recently selected Linux to run Matlab to process data instead of the Windows machines suggested by a contractor. We use use Perl extensively to prep, Q/A and archive data. Finally we use Perl/Apache/Linux to operate several intranets and internets installations.
Unfortunately, the article paints a real false and negative picture of the use of technology in the Navy. It is sensationalism crap.
Long term exposure to Capsaicin such as extreme hot sauce may cause pain receptors to become "desensitized".
However, pain receptors are completely different from taste receptors. In fact, Capsaicin fakes out the pain receptors as it simulates real damage. This tricks the brain into producing endorphins, which promote a pleasant sense of well-being or even an alterted state of consciousness. The endorphin high can make spicy foods mildly addictive (and for some, such as myself, a complete obsession).

Doing a quick calculation and using the sq mileage for San Diego County of 4281 sq miles and the nominal energy density of solar at that latitude of 3.1 KWh/m^s/day and a 1% conversion factor gives:
3.1 KWh/m^2/day *.01 =.031 KWh/m2/day
4281 Sq Miles * 2.58 x 10^6 Sq Meters/ Sq Miles = 11 x 10^9
11 x 10^9 x.031 = 343 x 10^6 Kwh/day
Or 343,000 Megawatts-Hours for a small California county.
Not that I am proposing to cover an entire county with PV panels but if you are going to "tell it like it is" then do.
BTW, can we bury the Nuclear afterproducts in your backyard?
They are not allies they are businesses and as such are responsible to the stock holders. They are in business to make money. IBM has been cozying up to some Open Source projects as a way to bolster its other offerings and to more effectively compete with MS and their other competitors.
IBM sells DB2, while MySQL does intersect a subset of the potential customer database needs, so they are naturally critical. Nothing amazing here.
the fact that THERE IS MOUNTAINS after BILLIONS of years of erosion
Sure lets use common-sense. It may suprise you that mountains are not typically BILLIONS of years old. They may have materials that are very old but their current elevation is due to the process uplifted. The rocky mountains for instance starting uplifting several 100 million years ago at best.
BTW there are lots of common sense geological features that nix a young earth arguement in the bud. For example, angular unconformties. There really is not a good young earth arguement for their existence. Examples abound, perhaps even in your neighborhood. Here is one from my collection. Such a feature requires several steps such as deposition, lithification (cementation), tilting, erosion, and deposition again. This takes time - and lot of it
Or here is another of my favorites. Here it is obvious that several processes are required to layer the column and then erode the river channel. If you are a YEC then indicate which feature was cause by the flood?

Since we are talking about offshore wind turbines here and floating obstacles tend to attact fish in large numbers, I would say any chopped birds would provide a ready supply of fish food - which in turn would be turned into human food.
So in a round about way these windmills would be transforming protein that is not normally in the human food chain (ie seagulls and such) into one that is (fish). Maybe we should be looking into the older faster turning wind conversion technology;)

I always thought that was interesting.
I applaud the Danes for their bold, foward thinking Energy 21 energy policy. Bush's policy on the other hand, involves meddling in the middle east or drilling in our national parks and preserves.
Being the man of vision that he is, Bush, should reconsider our depenence on oil from the middle east and its impact of our foriegn policy. Like a drug addicted individual the US governments choices sometimes are far from rational.
For example, we call the Saudi's "our fiends". Bullshit! They would slice our thoat in a heart beat if we were not their biggest customer. They are a twisted theocracy that rejects womens rights, democracy, personal liberty, religious freedom, etc. We have nothing in common.
If the man would come out with a Kennedy like vision and plan of developing renewable technologies such as wind, solar, geothermal, wave, conservation, etc. and even clean and safe nuclear we would be much further down road to world stability, peace and prosperity. Instead he wants to start another war and one which has the potential of being a messy urban war where civilian casualities are unavoidable if you want to win.
