"Apple is preparing to enter the immersive technology race sooner rather than later..."
After Facebok (through acquiring Oculus), HTC & Valve (Vice), Sony (PSVR), Samsung (Gear), Microsoft (Hololens), and Google (Magic leap), Apple might maybe finally also start doing something.
That sounds more like "later, rather than not at all" to me.
"aims to convert neurons in the brain into electronic signals"
So what, you burn them and run an engine or something? As a neuroscientist, I'd have to recommend against this. You kind of need those.
From the hackaday piece: "we’re not going to replace ourselves into extinction. That’s just silly. Someone still has to design robots, train them, fix them, and streamline their processes."
Yes, because design, training, mechanics and streamlining are uniquely human capabilities!
Just because you have a hard time imagining something, does not mean it cannot be. Many people have a hard time imagining evolution working.
While I agree that it would be nice to have some sensible answers and concensus in the health and nutrition field, bits like this really made me cringe:
"The pattern science serves up, thanks to its winged monkeys in the media, is something like this:
Step One: We are totally sure the answer is X.
Step Two: Oops. X is wrong. But Y is totally right. Trust us this time."
Excuse me?! Those press-gargoyles sure as bloody hell aren't OUR winged monkeys. It's more like:
"Step one: scientists say: hey, there's an effect linking A and B. Let's investigate further.
Step one A: press: Scientists prove A causes B! Don't ever do A again!!! You won't believe what comes next...
Step two: scientists say: Hrmmm... seems it doesn't replicate. Good thing we checked.
Step two B: press: Holy shit scientists have been lying to us! Oh the humanity! Who can we trust?!"
Having used the DK2 both without positional tracking as well as with, I can confirm that just the tracking can make all the difference: it made me about as sick as using the DK1 did (obviously, this effect is minimal if you don't move your head around).
I have experienced the Oculus DK 1 and am now in posession of a DK2. While I haven't tried the Gear VR, I think the reviewers treat the lack of positional tracking very very mildly. To me, the sense of disorientation in the DK1 is so huge, and having used the DK2 without positional tracknig as well as with, I can confirm just the tracking can make all the difference.
Sure, you can say 'just don't move your head', but then you might as well say 'just don't look around' and use a standard 3D screen.
Full positional head tracking is a key element of VR, and Oculus was absolutely right to move in that direction with the DK2.
Yeah, I also went from xcom to ck2. And in both I can't stop myself from save/load cheating. =(
In xcom I went iron man, but that's not supported for ck2 with DLCs. Guess I'll have to learn self-discipline (but not enough to stop playing)
For my multi-player itch it's still Blood Bowl, and has been so for years now (played high-quality low-graphics for free on the donation-based site fumbbl.com ), and my latest single-player addiction is the deep feudal dynasty simulator crusader kings 2.
Hi/.
Sorry for the off topic but I'm looking for help from the/. community and have no idea how to reach the hive other than comments.
A long time ago (2 years?) there was a post on a tool that would automatically install the most recent version of a bunch of shareware and freeware without clicking through all the muck. I didn't save the link and despite some googling haven't been able to retrieve it. It seems like a tool that would save hours when installing a new system (if safe). Does someone remember the link or can someone with better search-fu find it? Thanks!

Yes. So it WAS now, and it IS a long time ago. =D
It IS actually A long time ago in a galaxy far away
Yes. This. =) Even with only 10 comments, multiple folks beat me to it. Damn.

"Games", right? Can't NOT think of Ender's Game here.
Or the other way around, like moving your head when your VR doesn't do head tracking.

Did anyone else read 'snorting coke and chip crumbs' the first time 'round?
That was my first thought as well.
Only the first 3 times I reread it, trying to make sense of it.

This. Damn you ninja! http://theoatmeal.com/comics/who_vs_whom
Good point, the public key being public is key.
Ask the secretary 'could you please ask your IT department for your' and then use any term, since they'll know.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Now that it's suddenly a planetbuster with free ammo, chances of it getting built just skyrocketed! =P
It sounds like they based their text on sound scientific publications... (that have since been shown to be fraudulent) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diederik_Stapel#Meat_eaters_more_selfish_than_vegetarians
Thanks for the info, will take the snide in stride. =D

Oops wasn't logged in. Anyway, this was me. =P
Until I succeed in transporting my friends, I will appreciate the integration.
