  2. Re:If only it was VMS... on Monad Shell Removed From Vista · · Score: 1

Well I don't know about VMS.... But I have worked on VME (Virtual Machine Environment). This is the operating system used on mainframes produced by Fujitsu who acquired both the machines and the O/S from ICL (International Computers Limited). And boy does VME have file versioning.

Quite frankly VMEs file generations system makes working with any *NIX/Windows/Linux/*BSD file system feel like stepping back into the dark ages.

Under VME when you edit a file and save the edit your filesystem will now contain two versions of the file which have the same name but different generation numbers (by default the saved file gets a +1 generation number). So after our first edit on file FRED we have files FRED(1) and FRED(2). This can go on for as long as you feel like it and there are obviously tools for deleting old generations etc. (optionally keeping "n" generations) And don't worry there's no need for the version number range to be contiguous.

Of course by default when a process calls OPEN_FILE(FRED) they get to open the version of the file with the current highest generation number. However if you wished you could call OPEN_FILE(FRED(12)) to open generation 12.

Needless to say the equivalent of directories (Libraries in VME) also have version numbers too.

And don't even get me started on VMEs permissions system and the hardware implemented Access Control Registers (ACRs) for controlling privileges of code. To say it makes all the x86 architecture based O/Ss approach to security look positively primeval is an understatement.

Even though I mostly have to work on Winderz based stuff these days I still say "VME - King of Operating Systems" :)

  3. Who cares about iTunes/Napster etc. ? on iTMS Launches in Japan · · Score: 1

Honestly who cares about another crappy iTunes store ?

To me the idea of paying ANY money over a token amount (say 5 UK pence) for a piece of music encoded in a cruddy lossy format such as mp3 is absurd - Especially when you do the maths.

In the UK it apprently costs 79p a track from iTunes (As I don't use it myself this is second hand knowledge) whereas a CD can be bought online for between £ 5 to £ 10. So if a CD contains an average 10 tracks that makes it between 50p to 100 p per track with each track being available in full 16bit 44.1 Khz WAV quality.

The crucial point being that you can then use something like the excellent cdex and you can rip your own MP3s with much better quality and with NO DRM.

Sorry but I simply don't understand why anyone would use something crappy like iTunes or an online subscription service. They're a total waste of money.

MP3 is a great "poor quality casette tape" or "am radio quality" replacement but it's the equivalent of buying a scaled down black & white photocopy of a painting for about the price of the real thing. Just because it can be done "over das interweb" doesn't make it a good idea.

And if you're using iTunes etc. simply to "try before you buy" then why not use BitTorrent/UseNet/Your p2p app of choice. instead ?

Pah kids today, stick a "made for l33t internet" tag on it and they'll buy any old crap.

  7. Re:You know what I would really like to see? on Getting A Handle On Vista · · Score: 1

A mere 5 clicks on "End Process" and you actually get something shut down ? You lucky, lucky bastard.

Whenever I try to terminate a process using Windows own inbuilt tools it either takes a godzillion attempts or it tells me "You can't shut that down, it's a system process" (Yes, I know. I'm trying to remove a f****ing virus from my friends daughters machine which is running with system privileges...)

Thankfully Sysinternals excellent Process Explorer lets me view and kill any running process whatsoever. And when you say kill, it kills ! (Mind you at this point I often discover it really was a system process and Windows crashes)

Still it's the only way to get rid of some of the more persistent nasties you get on a Winders box so it's well worth the trouble.

Sadly given my experience of the understanding of computers displayed by the average Windows user (i.e. not really interested in computing but bought a PC to use a digital camera, "the internet" etc.) I can see exactly what will happen next.

They'll delete a file from one of their smart folders (thinking it's a duplicate) then go to another smart folder and start crying because the file they're after isn't there (naturally the "smart" features of this scheme will ensure that the file has truly been purged from disk)

Having a well designed, thorough, tool for finding files is one thing (always an excellent idea) Having a means for a file to show up multiple folders is another. Sorry, but users are simply going to get confused. They'll believe they have multiple copies of the files in different folders and there'll be tears. Floods of tears I say.

Sometimes it's hard enough getting people to understand shortcuts and that "My Documents" and "C:\Documents And Settings\user_name\My Documents" are the same folder.

Still like a lot of these "good idea" features (spatial Nautilus anyone ?) as long as it can be switched off I don't care.

To do otherwise is "weird" "antisocial" and "unpatriotic".

After all most media related items rely on artificial scarcity to drive demand. Ooh look... "Limited edition", "digitally remastered", "now with the missing 20 seconds" (you get the idea).
